Chapter Text

(What JJ Looks like)
"JJ, you're Fired!" Keith, her boss, or her ex-boss screeched at her like a banshee. Bloody hell!
JJ worked in a diner forty minutes from where she lived. The pay was shit, the owner was a groping bastard, and the place was sticky everywhere before JJ cleaned it. Honestly, she didn't know how they were still open.
JJ was never able to keep a job down. Maybe it was her, her bosses, or just the places she ended up working. For some reason, she would do something that usually set her boss's temper to boil.
Currently, she was colouring with a little boy at table five while his parents were in the bathroom. They ha just come back when her boss had started spitting fire like a wannabe dragon, nasty.
The couple looked shocked and then disgusted by Keith, so maybe it wasn't her this time. "Why?" JJ asked as she smiled at the little boy. She turned back when her ex-boss continued yelling.
"You're always late, Missy, doing stuff I don't pay you to do! Not listening to half of what I'm saying" JJ blinked at him in surprise. The only things she did were clean his disgusting diner and help the chef, Connor, with some recipes.
JJ didn't understand where she went wrong, but she knew it started with her parents being murdered. Everything was perfect until then.
*She remembered hearing a loud bang when she was seven. It was the middle of the night and her dog Tayter was barking and she heard a loud whine and then silence.
She immediately ran to her parents, scared and worried about Tayter. She had just gone into their bedroom when there was a loud crash of glass that caused her to freeze. Her mom was already awake and sitting up. Her dad was crouched down at his safe, reaching in to get his gun.
Her dad was an FBI Agent and was working on a high-profile case. He had evidence to send the criminal away for life, but someone didn't like that and came to their house that night. They killed their dog, and her dad rushed her to a hidden compartment in the closet floor, his face more serious than she had ever seen him. She saw her mom's look of horror as the hatch closed.
It wasn't the first time she hid in there, but it was the scariest by far, and the last.
She heard a gunshot and a thump on the ground. She froze, thinking the worst. A hiccup got caught in her throat, as multiple bangs rang through the room above her. She heard her dad yell for her mom to get down as she tried to muffle her hiccups.
Mom screamed and then gasped as another bang echoed above. She didn't hear her mom scream again. JJ sobbed as her dad cried out for her mom. She wrapped her hands around her mouth trying to stop the noise from reaching the intruders.
More gunfire went off for the next few seconds, but it felt much longer. A thump shook the floor. She felt it against her forehead and flinched away, causing her shoulder to hit the wooden panel. She froze at the loud noise it caused. JJ held her breath and silently cried.
She stilled as she heard footsteps in the room, her heart racing as the hatch unlocked. She cried out as the hatch cracked open, squinting at the little bit of light that came through. She stopped when heard her dad gently shushing her, but then she started sobbing violently, her whole body shaking.
The hatch slammed shut as a bang shot through the room, a large thud echoed against the walls. Another shot, then a thump from further away hit the floor, then silence. She stifled a cry as she felt something warm dripping onto her legs.*
The police found her two days later when her dad didn't show up for work. Dried blood all over her legs.
Ever since that night, everything that could go wrong, did. This was the 20th job she had been fired from in the last three years, and she was only nineteen. Another job was a bust... Now she had to find a new one. The small town she grew up in was running outta places she could find work.
It didn't take long to clean out her locker, say goodbye to Conner, and leave the shithole behind. It took another five minutes to get to the bus stop.
She didn't cry at losing another job, but she was tired. So tired of having to start over all the time. Tired of her plumbing not working, tired of rats and bugs in her apartment, tired of having to watch her back just to get to said apartment.
She was just so exhausted, nothing she did made it easier. She was jerked out of her thoughts by a loud screeching noise. She snapped her head to the sound she didn't even have enough time to gasp when a car ran right into her.

She felt like she was floating. She was calm and had no worries. It was soothing to the soul. She didn't know how long she was there before something popped up in front of her.
Congratulations on Becoming a New Gamer!

She blinked before reading the strange words. It took some time for her head not to feel fuzzy. Like her brain was stuffed with cotton balls.
Soft soothing fluffy cotton balls. What was she doing? Oh right, JJ... that was her name. Right? How long has she been floating? Felt like seconds and ages all at once.
Shaking her head, she read the words in front of her. Gamer? Like a video game? Did she want to continue, or would she have to start over? There was no guarantee it would be better, but maybe it would be the last time she had to start over.
Sighing, she tapped her finger on settings. She wanted to see if it gave any clues before deciding.

[YES] [NO] [CHANGE]
Zombies!? Holy shit! Okay, calm down, it can't be that bad... wait, what did it first say? The Game of Walkers, right? TWD? That's the walking dead, Oh mother of god, she is going to be in The Walking Dead!
Part of her was horrified because it was her favourite show. She knew the bad shit that happened. Another part was squealing like a little girl. God, she would get to see Daryl, Glenn, Maggie, and Carl! She loved Rick too but those four were her favourite. With newfound enthusiasm, she continued through the settings.
Auto-Save: Auto-save when you sleep, enter a dungeon, and when levelling up
[Disabled] [Enabled] [Customize]
Auto-Save? Hell Yeah! Clicking on Customize, she noticed that there were checkboxes. She clicked on when you enter a dungeon, when you sleep, when you level up, and every thirty minutes. It would save as a separate save file.
In-Game Menu: Allows you to view the menu anytime; time freezes until the menu is closed
[Disabled] [Enabled]
Yes! That is seriously overpowered in the real world. She is so glad she plays video games.
[Auto Loot: Collects loot automatically]
[Disabled] [Enabled]
Hmm... on the one hand, I wouldn't lose anything, but would I see what I got? Best to enable it just in case.
Permadeath: When enabled, Gamer only has one life.
[Disabled] [Enabled]
Holy Fuck!!! Unlimited lives?? Hell to the YES! God, she could squeal.
HUD: Shows some stats
[Disabled] [Enabled] [Customize]
Ooh customization, she could say with pride that she spent the next several hours making the HUD perfect. Changing the layout and size of everything. Even the hidden stuff like when she would be underwater. Most of the information was packed neatly in the corners so it wouldn't block her view.
HP, MP, and SP were in the top right. She had wanted the bar but it only gave a little information so she went with the numbers. There was a bar underneath that was hidden unless she was underwater. With other hidden bars for buffs and debuffs.
The mini-map was in the bottom left corner and was folded up like a small globe until she thought of it. On top of the globe was a little envelope icon that would keep notifications hidden until she was ready to read them. Beside the globe was a menu icon that would show when she levels up or has notifications about her stats. On top of that is a little icon with a hammer and spoon that is the shortcut for the crafting menu, and isn't that cool.

Ping!
You have slept in a bed, and HP, MP and SP have been restored to 100%. All ailments and negative status effects have been cured.
Blinking awake, she looked at the screen. JJ slowly smiled. Oh My God, it worked, part of her thought it was a dream. Hell it still could be. She was going to enjoy it anyway.
Would you like to start the Tutorial?
[YES] [NO]
To begin, think or say "Menu"
Menu, she thought, smiling when it came up.

[Quests]
[None]
Not surprised, she wonders what kind of quests she will get.
[Shop] (Locked)
Again not surprising.
[Inventory]
Holy Moly, the inventory just kept going. It was either infinite or close to it. There were tabs on the top. Armor, Clothing, Accessories, Crafting, Food, Medicine, and Junk.
Auto-equip armour while in battle? Yes, please! Hmm... There were four slots for headwear. Three for chest, belt and bottom, weapons. Four for footwear, and one for defence.
Crafting, Food, Medicine, and Junk were blank boxes. Probably because she didn't have anything in them.

[Party] (Locked)
Hmm... that had potential.
[Settings]
Settings were the same as before but some options JJ couldn't change. She was grateful she changed the settings before she continued the game, speaking of which, where was she?
Looking around, JJ noticed she was in a hospital. She looked down and saw she was wearing a PJ set, a powder blue silk set that felt so soft. JJ wondered how she could afford something like this. She didn't have to wonder for long when she was hit with memory after memory, too fast to see what they were about. When the flashes were over, she knew her mother had got them for her.
Her life didn't stop at seven in this world? Dimension? That man never came to their house. Tayter never died horribly and alone and her parents were never murdered.
JJ lived a happy spoiled life but three weeks ago they were on a camping trip when they hit a deer. Her dad was impaled in the neck with antlers and her mom went out the window when her seatbelt snapped. JJ was the only one to survive but she had been in a coma.
Sitting up in the bed, JJ gasped as she saw something alarming.
Rick Grimes was across from her!
