Summary
Toni’s eyes linger to the man to their right. Paul seems unfazed, maybe a little amused, scanning the clearing for his friends. His brow is furrowed as his eyes wash over the boys, and land swiftly on Toni.
What an incredibly fucking weird feeling.
It’s like something inside of her shifts into its correct place with a satisfying click - there’s something, and she doesn’t know what it is, but there’s something deep in her chest cavity that was off-kilter before that exact moment.
To her surprise, Paul’s expression changes completely, seemingly instantaneous upon looking at her. She watches as any pressure in his brow seems to relax entirely, the man’s jaw dropping open as he views her. His eyes look so soft all of a sudden, the look on his face seeming possessed, entranced in some way.
Entranced seems the perfect word to describe it. Before she can register what’s happening, the man has quite literally fallen to his knees, the look in his eyes nearing how a religious zealot would view an incarnation of God himself.

I modified some details and history about the mermaids to fit into my not-so-fairy tale-like concept that everything has a price and method. But you will see. I have orphaned this a year ago (as to why I won't share), but now I have decided to rewrite it a bit. I won't promise that I will finish it, because I mainly returned to this for my mental health. Because I am successful and creative, I have created great things. It feels good to reread it, and while I am at it, I... you know what! I'll just do it, and I'll get what I can get out of this!
