Charon woke to his name, just a whisper breathed into the dark.
He blinked, eyes adjusting to the dim glow of the streetlight slipping through the blinds. Hermes was curled beside him, hair a mess across the pillow, one arm thrown loosely over Charon’s chest and their legs tangled together. His mouth was parted, breath shallow, brow faintly furrowed like he was having a nightmare.

The souls clustered behind him, looking like they might scatter if someone so much as breathed wrong. Hermes felt only marginally braver than they did.
He straightened, cleared his throat, and held his caduceus like it might make him seem more godly and powerful rather than making him look like a teenager with a fancy walking stick. “I’m Hermes! New psychopomp. First official run bringing souls down from the surface. Thought it’d be nice to drop by, introduce myself, do everything correctly, all that.”

The first time it happened he would swear up and down that it was an accident. He would go so far as to say that all the times thereafter had also been accidents. Hermes knew that his word didn’t hold much ground, being a reputable liar and all, but he was willing to swear under oath that everything had happened out of pure dumb luck and coincidences.
Never say that the god of liars is immune to his own bullshit.
