Summary
Are we living a life that is safe from harm? Of course not. We never are. But that is not the right question. The question is: are we living a life that is worth the harm?
Kaneki Ken loves medicine.
He loves his father's old textbooks. He loves the colorful anatomy diagrams. He loves the rhythm of scientific articles, the shape of words like 'fossa' and 'muscular dystrophy'. The research projects/work shifts/studying/crying don't leave time for Kafka, but those books were for creepy little orphans, anyway. Which he isn't anymore, because he's not a kid anymore, because soon, he'll never be that kid again.
The world is hurt or be hurt. It is better to be hurt than to hurt others. But to be a doctor is to heal hurts without hurting yourself. To be a doctor is to be free.
Kaneki Ken is growing up. Kaneki Ken is moving on. Kaneki Ken will become a doctor or die trying, because hope is a thing with teeth and he'd bite through his tongue before going hungry ever again. And god help anyone who gets in his way.
aka: an au in which kaneki ken is premed instead of a lit major, with mixed but (ultimately) uplifting results

“They kept asking questions that had nothing to do with Quinn’s performance.” I roll my eyes and notice that I’m getting worked up again. Trying to get the midnight blue Eridian back on track had been a nightmare and I’d almost lost my composure a couple of times. “Just what I like to do and what I’ve seen of Erid so far and if they can give me a tour once my suit is finished. And they insisted I tell them what my favorite type of mineral is. I mean, why would they want to know that? What does that have to do with how their kid is doing in class?”
Midway through my rant Rocky has stopped carding his claw through my hair. He is silent for a few seconds and I’m just about to ask him if he’s alright when his whole body starts to tremble. It alarms me enough that I wiggle my arms underneath me and lift my upper body off the couch.
“Rock?”
But then the trembling morphs into full on shaking and then laughter so loud and shrill that I have to cover my ears.

Summary
Grace has lived a long life on Erid, but he knows that his time is up. He's ok with this, though he isn't sure what to expect for the next great adventure.
He does wish that he could stay with Rocky though. And surprisingly, it's granted, as he wakes up next to his body one morning. But he seems to go unnoticed, and needs to figure out a way to get through to those around him that he's here.
(Or, Grace dies and becomes a ghost. Now, if he could only get across to Rocky that he's still here....)
