    Summary

“Just hear me out,” Yuuri presses. He can feel heat burning behind his eyes and he grits his teeth, fighting back the tears. If he cries now, Victor will be too occupied with comforting him to actually pay attention to what he’s saying. “I want you to be happy.”

“I am,” Victor grounds out, confused and hurt. “I’m happy with you. What even gave you the idea that I’m not?"

“Because I’m never going to win gold!” Yuuri shouts. His words echo like a gunshot, and the silence that follows it is haunting.

(In which Victor is gold--magnificent, breathtaking, brilliant--and Yuuri is glass--transparent, thin, breakable.)

Short, but just absolutely fantastic. Definitely a favourite. Honestly maybe my very favourite. One I come back to again and again.

    Summary

Wei Wuxian is staring up at the sky, thinking idly about the taste of Emperor’s Smile on his tongue, when Suibian jumps full force onto his stomach and cries, “A-Xian, don’t be mad!”

The sheer force of her pounce knocks the breath out of him. The resulting pause is just long enough for Jiang Cheng, who up to this point has been laying rather peacefully next to him, to shoot up and demand, “Oh great, what did you do now?”

To be fair, the question isn’t exactly unwarranted. Suibian looks an absolute mess: twigs stuck in her fur, dirt smeared across the white fluff of her underbelly. She’s panting up a storm, little heh heh heh gasps that haven’t edged into her normal high-pitched laughter. When her ears press back against her head, she could almost pass for pitiful.

    “Bichen hates me.”

Wei Wuxian’s first thought is Why would Lan Zhan’s daemon hate you?, but it’s followed quickly by remembering exactly where he is, how little trouble he’s caused today, and the fact that he hasn’t seen Suibian for a few minutes.

A grin spreads across his face.

(Or: The most important name a cultivator will ever pick isn’t for their sword. It’s for their daemon.)

If I had a nickel for every time a MASSIVELY long Daemon AU became one of my all time favourite fics, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t much, but it’s weird that it’s happened twice.

This is the longest fic I’ve ever read. It has an absolutely INSANE amount of world building, and character development, and plot, and yes, so much heartfelt romance you’ll want to cry, and somehow? Not a s i n g l e moment of it drags. It is, without a doubt, one of the best, most well crafted fics I’ve ever read. Worth every single one of the many many moments I spent reading it.

    Summary

    “Are you a cultivator?”

“No,” she says, steadily. “This one doesn’t possess the core for it.” She pauses and raises her eyes to his, so boldly he finds it a little startling. “I believe that I can be of use to the Jiang sect in spite of that, and I have brought a gift to prove it. May I show you?”

Fully intrigued now, Jiang Cheng nods. The girl unslings the bundle from her back, unties a couple of straps, and unrolls it on the floor in a smooth motion.

Jiang Cheng is on his feet before he even consciously realizes it’s happened, and the reaction murmurs out through the hall. There, on a blanket that belongs on the back of a horse, are five Wen cultivator swords, offered to him by a girl who looks like the word “bumpkin” was invented specifically for her. What the fuck.

“Where did you get those?” he asks, instead of asking “What the fuck?” out loud, because that would be unbecoming of his status as sect leader.

The girl meets his eyes again, lifts her chin, and says simply, “I killed the men who carried them.”

Or: Fan Dingxiang cultivates the swole path. Jiang Cheng doesn't know how to handle that.

    Summary

More than a century after the events of His Dark Materials, a Rusakov particle physicist (and lifelong Lyra Belacqua fanboy) brings a team of experimental theologians to Night Vale.

It was supposed to be a simple research trip. Instead, Carlos finds himself making a home, falling in love, and — with allies like the alethiometrist who adores his hair, a well-read middle-schooler who's handy with a knife, and a young woman accidentally displaced out of space and time — facing down a gathering crisis which threatens to topple the entire Republic of Heaven.

Utterly fantastic. Super long and wonderful the whole way through. Holds the honour of being one of four stories that made me care about the OCs as much as the canon cast. The pacing and plot are fantastic (like seriously, the amount of world-building in this is genuinely astounding) and the romance is great and well developed. It also blends night vale and his dark materials so so well together.
