Ilya Rozanov has spent five years holding Shane Hollander at arm’s length - not because he didn’t love him, but because he loved him too much to ask him to risk everything for something that could fall apart. He was good at that: the careful distance, the walls that looked like indifference, the way he’d learned to be close without being close. He’d had a lot of practice.
What he didn’t have practice for was what came after he was done lying to himself. He didn’t have practice for this - for something warm and bright and absolutely terrifying. Something that fits in the spaces between games and cities and the distance between Boston and Raleigh. Something that makes Ilya think, for the first time in a long time, that maybe the risk is worth it.
He just needs to figure out what to do with it all before their careers swallow them whole

Once the glow of the cottage fades and the boys have to head back to the real world, they have to start the long difficult year being separated before Ilya signs with Ottawa. Or at least that was the plan, until Ilya opened his mouth and accidentally got himself traded to Montreal. But it’s fine, just one year for Ilya in Montreal and then their 10 year plan is back on track… Right?
Through their year on the same team, Ilya helps Shane come to terms with the fact that his team kinda sucks, Hayden gets chirped into oblivion but still realizes that maybe Ilya Rozanov isn’t nearly as bad of a guy as he thought, and Hollanov come to terms with a new question they didn’t expect to ask.
Now that they’ve gotten a taste of living together and being on the same team, how are they ever going to give it up?

Outside of playing against each other on the ice this was the closest they’d been in three years. Nothing but chairs, tables, a scattering of memories, and a couple of tuna melts between them. The corner of Shane’s mouth tipped upwards in a smile. Ilya felt something twisting his gut. The delicious grape leaves turning sour in his stomach. Svet laid a hand gently on his own and he turned his attention back to her that concerned look had grown and matured into something quickly approaching sympathy. He looked back at Hollander and found his attempt at a smile gone. He looked sad and a bit lost. Was Shane on a date? The man was seated too close to Shane to be casual.
Or Shane leaves Ilya's home in 2016 and never returns. A few years later they see each other at a restaurant while Shane is on a date.

Shane Hollander has the highest hockey IQ in the NHL...and actively pretends he doesn't. He's already set himself apart in many ways, and he doesn't need "absolute hockey nerd" added to the list.
Keeping this secret gets harder as he stops hiding other parts of himself from those around him. He comes out to the Voyageurs (who don't take it very well), he starts hanging out with the Raiders (though no one has a clue about him and Ilya being anything beyond friends), and he feels as if he is losing parts of himself in the expectations others hold for him.
Ilya notices, and resolves to create a space that his boyfriend can thrive in, even if that means getting him the fuck out of Montreal.
Set during The Long Game, where Shane and Ilya have made their plan, Shane's parents know about their relationship, and they've started telling people they are friends, but before Ilya officially transfers to Ottawa.
