After the incident, Rumi, Mira, and Zoey are still recovering. PTSD, separation anxiety, and unable to handle hot temperatures, they have a long road ahead of them. At least they have each other… and the demon hunters trying to kill them.
Before the incident, Rumi grew up in a concrete cell, in chains, with no knowledge of the outside world. Everything changed when a piece of her cell broke off and she got to see the sky for the first time. Also other girls and their music. It was all scary and new. But what wasn’t? Especially since Celine was on her last nerve with keeping Rumi alive.

In this world, demons have been accepted into society--mostly. There are still some who go out of their way to make the demons' lives harder. For example, the Hunters--an infamous, anonymous group known for targeting demons and killing them without repercussion.
But then one of the leading members falls in love with a demon, and bears a child. The member was executed, but the child was kept alive. Kept alive and tortured by one of the other leading members.

Mira and Zoey knew what she was was, Mira and Zoey the demon hunters knew what she was and had their weapons drawn, and Rumi’s voice had just threatened the Hunmoon they were sworn to protect.
She should run- should act like the demon she was and run away from the demon hunters despite how desperately she wanted to be near them.
She should find Jinu. He was a demon too, a demon who hated what he was and understood Rumi, who had promised to make the Saja Boys lose tonight.
But Mira and Zoey were right there- Mira and Zoey.
How could she run away from the people she wanted nothing more than to spend her life close to.
She had been so close, so close to finally being able to fully lean into Zoey’s hugs, to taking off her long-sleeves during morning treadmill runs with Mira, to going to that damn bathhouse with them.
(She had been so close to being something good enough to let them see.)
She couldn't run from them. (Rumi was tired, so tired.)
