Something Shane did hear, though, were –
“Skates?” he mumbled, confused as to why he could hear the scratch of blades on the ice. He followed the sound to a more a secluded section of the lake, hidden behind some trees, and couldn’t believe his eyes.
Ilya, his curls mostly covered by a woolen beanie, in long, comfortable-looking leggings and a training jacket, which was a lot less bulky than Shane’s cotton-lined coat. He was doing some beautiful spins out on the ice. Shane also noticed the skates Ilya wore were definitely not hockey skates but proper figure skating ones!
Still mostly obscured by the trees, Shane kept watching his boyfriend effortlessly sliding across the ice. Ilya executed some spins, step sequences and even a few jumps, like he had never done anything else. Even if Shane had never been able to distinguish all the different types of jumps just from watching...

Ilya did figure skating, when he was younger. Now, he rarely finds the time to do so, but once he finally did, he embarrasses himself in front of Shane.

Spring in Ottawa is pretty beautiful, if you think it might be your last. Crocuses peek out from under the frozen ground, purple dots against the thin layer of snow. The days are getting longer. Ilya’s been spending a lot of time sitting in the sun and watching the gentle canopy of leaves stretch out across the water. He tries to be positive about it. He used to only get hours with Shane. Minutes. Two weeks between seasons at the cottage used to stretch out in front of him like a sun-soaked forever. Ten years of reaching out and two weeks of grabbing and touching and having. He used to live for those hours and minutes and seconds. Six months to five years, they tell him, and in the grand scheme of things, six months really isn't that bad.
Spring and summer, Shane and Ilya, and a life sentence that's all too short.
