Summary
Ribbit hadn't been the first abstraction since Jax arrived, but Ragatha had never seen Jax take an abstraction as hard as Ribbit before. She shouldn't be surprised. Jax was always closer to Ribbit than anyone else. But it was still jarring to see the previously happy-go-lucky, jokester Jax acting so subdued.

They hit a bump in the road and Will's bag fell over, his painting rolling out of it. Will quickly moved to put it back, but Mike noticed and asked, "What's that?"
Will looked at Mike. "It's a painting I made. The one--" he paused, thinking for a second, and then continued-- "the one I brought to the airport."
Mike looked puzzled for a moment, but then he realized. "You were going to show it to me, weren't you? And I just completely brushed you off." He chuckled. "Fuck, I really was being a jerk. Can I see it now?"

At that, Jax gave her a long look as his mouth narrowed out into a little line. Then he sighed quietly. It wasn't the way he used to sigh, with dramatic posturing that begged the attention from anyone even remotely listening. It was small. Tired. Reflexive. Then he sat down with his knees to his chest, glaring into the dark water. The only light here, a single streetlamp, glowed weakly.
"Denial is an ugly color on you. Clashes with your stupid hat."
"Jax — "
"I'm gone," he snapped. His voice echoed in the abyss. "Don't you get it? No one comes back from Abstraction. You're not saving me, you're not helping me grow. All you're doing is keeping my body from rotting." Jax's hands worked their way up to his head, squeezing as he growled, "You're talking to a ghost."

This is also told with reverse chronological scenes that we don't get to have in the canon of the show but are canon in my heart. Frank ends up with the folder, Mary visits Evelyn after the party, oh but they were all so good once. I love these characters so much

“I saw him, Ev.” He pulls out the nickname everyone had used for her twenty years ago. She freezes, and the look on her face shifts from annoyance to unease.
He keeps going, staring her down. “I saw him at the Stone Gala. What was he doing there? You let him go to that?”
Evelyn bites her lip, and Frank can tell she’s hiding something, that this goes deeper than the cutting insults and icy glares Charley delivered at the penthouse.
“You saw him,” she says cautiously.
“Worse,” Frank answers, moving further into the doorway so Evelyn is forced to step back and keep the door open. “I talked to him. What happened to him?
