“Rose called. She flies to LA tomorrow but she’s gonna come visit us for a couple hours today. She’ll be here at 4, gone by dinner.” Shane delivers this news while placing his bundle down by the firepit. He stands and brushes his hands, then raises a smiling face towards Yuna and Ilya. Yuna will not deny she’s excited to meet Rose Landry, but the timing… if Ilya’s fixed glare on the rippling water was anything to go by, it admittedly could be better.
“Rose Landry is coming today.” Ilya says, confirmation rather than question.
“Yeah, I mean, she’s been so supportive and she’s been keen to see the cottage. I knew she was in the area but she didn’t think she’d have time to come by, but she does, and it seems like a good opportunity for you to meet her, and-"

Ilya and Shane steal away for a two night stay at the Cottage in fall. Yuna and David are there for the afternoon when Shane receives a call from Rose, who he invites over that afternoon to see his place and meet his mystery boyfriend. Summary

“At what?” Shane snaps, because he’s getting really sick of not being in on the joke.
“He’s a porn star, man.”
“A-” Shane says, swallowing thickly. “What?”

In late October, Ilya picks up some kind of freakish Canadian flu that dogs him into November.
It is the weirdest shit. He has to duck out of practice because his nose starts bleeding twice in one week and he wakes up in a hotel in Columbus with another one that leaves stains on the pillow. On the flight back to Ottawa, Hazy drops into the seat next to Ilya midflight and asks, "This isn't, like, a cocaine thing, right?"
Ilya laughs so hard it's probably a little rude.
They have a plan. Ilya's body has a different plan.

The world narrows mercifully to the simple logic of weight and movement, physics that he can control. For a few blessed seconds, the memories pressing against the back of his skull recede, and there is no phantom bite of ice under his skates, no roar of a stadium crowd worshipping a god that no longer exists.
Just this.
He slides the drinks down the bar with a practiced flick, flashes that curated smile again, feels the brief, shallow surge of satisfaction when one of them says, “Keep the change,” and tosses an extra bill into the tip jar. Small victories. Small comforts.
Shane has learned to survive on crumbs.

Ilya starts calling Shane boring regularly after that, not cruelly but persistently, the way you press a bruise you know is there just to confirm it still hurts. Shane's cereal is boring, Shane's training schedule is boring, Shane's shoes lined up by the door are boring, and Shane responds with variations of "fuck off" and "you're an asshole" that become increasingly creative and occasionally surprising. They do not talk about anything that matters. They talk about groceries and whose turn it is to take out the trash and whether Ilya's music is too loud at midnight, which it is.
On the ice, Shane is someone else entirely. Ilya watches him from the upper stands every morning with vending machine coffee going cold in his hand and doesn't tell anyone.
Or: Shane asked Ilya once how you know when it's the right person. Ilya described Shane to him, and Shane didn't recognise himself.
