After being a witness to an horrible accident on the ice, Shane Hollander, riddled with PTSD, surprisingly retires from playing hockey for the NHL in 2015. The reasons for his Retirement are kept confidential and vague, the official statement only mentions an career ending injury.
He needs years to even manage to set foot into an ice rink again but eventually manages to become an assistant coach for the Ottawa Centaurs, to reconnect with his beloved sport in some way.Ilya Rozanov had dealt with his fathers death and the final fallout with his brother alone. He feels lost and lonely in Boston and never wants to return to Russia. To secure permanent residency in Canada, he approaches a trade to Ottawa, shocking the entire hockey community.
He won’t admit it to anyone but after Shane Hollander disappeared from the NHL and his life almost 3 years ago, a part of him disappeared too. The Centaurs are currently still the worst team in the devision but something about playing in the hometown of Shane Hollander draws him there.Bookmarked by Llnween

He felt a rush as he was hauled up from the ground and ushered outside. He couldn’t see the officer, but the strong grip on his arm was extra noticeable as he was guided to the curb.
It wasn’t until he sat down on the curb that he saw the officer properly. It was a man, and he was young. As Ilya looked him over, he quickly realized that this was perhaps the most attractive man he’d ever seen in his life. He had on his black pants, tactical belt, and black police polo covered by a thick vest. A silver badge shone on his chest. Ilya barely caught his nametag, 'Hollander'."

Hayden’s eyes flickered to Shane as he sat on the bench, chewing on the edge of his mouth guard.
“Don’t fucking look at him,” Ilya insisted as he bent down for the faceoff.
“Excuse me?” Hayden mumbled, eyes darting back to him.
“You heard me,” he retorted, his tone clipped. “He’s not your teammate anymore; he’s mine. If you think Marlow is a problem to your game, wait until you see what I will do to your team if you hurt anyone on mine again.”
Hayden scoffed, dipping his head as he tried to focus on the game. Something about Ilya’s words still rang through his head though, sounding so definitive that he didn’t want to risk seeing what he was actually referring to when he said that.
The puck dropped again, and Ilya stole it before he could comprehend how quickly it happened.

Hollander stopped dead, his eyes widening in surprise as he took in Ilya, hand paused as it hung over a stray box of oats at his feet.
The shepherd made a low whine, snapping Ilya out of his frozen state, and it seemed to do the same for Hollander as well as it booped their nose into his leg firmly, urging him to take notice.
“Hol-” Ilya finally choked out as Shane stood up abruptly, eyes glazed over in panic. With a nod at the floor, he turned and strode away, the dog trotting along diligently at his heels.
“Wait, Hollander!”
Ilya was stunned. There was no other word for it. He feels like he’d seen a ghost, and in some ways he kind of had, for Shane Hollander was very much a ghost of the past.

In 2014 Ilya slipped away to Russia for the summer to care for a man who was steadily forgetting everything. On the other side of the globe Shane Hollander had slipped away from the MLH and the world without a word, never to be heard from again.

It’s a difficult concept for Shane to grasp, taking up space like that. Birthday parties are always so loud and demanding of everyone’s attention, and Shane doesn’t know how to handle it, always stressed that people don’t actually want to be there or are just patronising him. The idea that people want to get together to celebrate Shane, besides his parents and husband, is completely foreign to him. The idea that his hockey team would show up for his birthday is incomprehensible.

Or, Shane gets rightfully fed up after the first month of Hayden's behavior towards Ilya. Punching Ilya was the final straw, so he tells Hayden to pretend he never found out. He shook his head. The runaway idea was stupid—there’s no way they’d be able to pull it off and even if they did, there were just so many things that could go wrong. He didn’t know if he could pull off a convincing scheme like this, he knew he’d leave some kind of sign (but what if he was careful)? Plus he had no idea if Ilya would actually be ok with dropping everyone and running—also what about Svetlana, would she be ok with doing all of that? He already felt like he asked Ilya to give up too much despite his reassurances and this would just be another thing he’d be asking Ilya to leave.
There was just no way that would work—right?
