Rozanov hummed thoughtfully. “I know. Was… a lot.” He pressed his lips together and looked toward the floor as a heavy silence hung between them for a few seconds. “You are okay now?” he finally asked, the lightness in his tone betrayed by a tremble on the word “okay.”

Shane Hollander was a consummate liar, and the twisted irony of his mom’s baffled statement told him more than anything that he needed to tighten up. He was done with messing around, done with letting people down, done with indulgences that he couldn’t afford. The path before him was clear; all he had to do was walk it.
(This, he would acknowledge later, was the biggest lie of all.)
OR: Shane learned how to lie with his words and stillness. Unfortunately his body speaks a language of its own, and it's one Ilya Rozanov never needed a translator for. As Rozanov lets Shane get away with anything except lying to him, this causes problems until it solves them.

Summary
Ilya's soulmate mark appears to him in the worst possible moment: during a shirtless interview during intervals. Now, the whole world knows that his soulmate is a man and that the man is Shane Hollander.
Now, Shane has to deal with a soulmate whose life just imploded, parents who want to know about his (very secretive) feelings for another man, the question of his sexuality and teammates who are revealing themselves to be just terrible.
All in all, maybe it could be worse. Like Russia could detain Ilya's passport, or his soulmate could be struggling with a mental illness, or Shane could be about to be tested in every way possible. But that wouldn't happen.
Of course not.
