Summary
Leo Valdez ran away a lot as a kid. He hated his family that wasn't his mom, hated his foster families... Well, it was why he'd gotten sent to the Wilderness School in the first place.
The most memorable time was that time when he was eight when he met a nine year old who made the worst swords Leo'd ever seen in his life. It'd been a week of two kids in over their heads trying to figure out how to make the metal work for them, and then the kid, who he'd only gotten a first name from, had vanished; not before leaving Leo with enough metal to make a hundred tiny throwing knives, though.
And if this field trip to the Grand Canyon turns out bad, he might have to use them.

“A man showed up.”
Percy frowned. “What do you mean, like an adult human man?”
“Exactly like an adult human man. He’s got greyer hair than you, looks like he might be in his fifties.”
Percy squinted and paused. “At camp? Is this another Tantalus situation?”
“Not that we can tell. He’s the new swords instructor. I don’t think he’s as good as you.”
“So if he’s not a spirit, did Chiron just like, pick up a mortal?”
“He says he’s a demigod.”
Percy stilled. “That’s impossible.”
“He’s suspicious, is what he is. Says his name is Quintus. Has a hellhound named Mrs. O’Leary. Was mildly shocked when we barely blinked at her. I think the top bet right now is that he’s actually you from the future.”

This are heating up in the demigod world as the titan army gathers. Clarisse is looking for something in the Maze, tensions are rising, and apparently there's a middle aged demigod running around that Percy's torn between obsessing over and hating on principle. No one knows who to trust, and a malevolent force is writhing beneath their feet...

“Uh, is this a bad time?”
His head shot up and he and Annabeth cried as one. “Grover!”
The satyr waved through the Iris message. “Hi. Listen, uh, I have a favor to ask…”
“Anything,” Annabeth promised, “I’m skipping school for the rest of the calendar year, so I’m free to dip whenever and wherever.”
Percy shrugged. “I have no set plans.”
“Great,” Grover looked relieved and glanced around, and that was when Percy noticed he was in a bathroom, probably locked in, “well, ideally you also go pick up Thalia on your way, or meet her here, I don’t mind either, whatever works. I knew I had to call you now if I wanted you to make it, though. Can you guys get to Bar Harbor by Friday evening? It’s an emergency.”

Things are stirring, and Percy's "work trip" is cut short in December to help Grover get two demigods to camp - not new ones, though, because Percy recognizes them, and the monster that's after them. Things spiral out of control almost immediately, and Percy is left with an almost impossible choice.
