Summary
Series of vignettes on Shane smoking, how he and Ilya talk to their daughter about addiction as she grows up, and the relationship between love and addiction. Smoking is central to this story, but, as Ilya will continue to remind Shane, smoking does not define him. Post-TLG and canon compliant except that Ilya is a non-smoker and Shane is addicted to nicotine.
Backstory: Shane inexplicably starts smoking at 27. He gets addicted quickly. He sees his addiction as a personal weakness and is deeply ashamed. The secrecy, shame, and fear of being discovered create ongoing tension in his relationship with Ilya. Ten years later, Shane is still an elite player, but years of smoking and hiding eventually impact his health and game. He retires at 37. Post-retirement, Shane and Ilya talk about having kids. They both desperately want to be parents, but Shane insists he must stop smoking first. He spends a year trying and failing before finally quitting. They adopt a newborn who they name Katya. The are happy—really happy. When Katya is four months old, Shane relapses.

“Ah, thank you so much!” exclaimed Shane, sounding cheerful for the first tonight.
And consequently, he gulped down almost all of the liquid in one go. Eyes pinching as the wine taste grated at his throat.

Shane Hollander’s hopes for the NHL were ripped from him by an ACL tear and replaced with doctor prescribed opioids at age 18. Four years later, hockey is a distant memory and his days consist of strange men and chasing a feeling drugs can never seem to provide anymore.
Ilya Rozanov’s family returned home to Russia when his father’s mental state deteriorated and the government wasted no time snatching back his work visa. Ilya stayed behind in that godforsaken city to do the only thing he had ever been able to support his family doing: sell dope.
Ilya sees a lot of sad people. Shane sees a lot of horny men. Neither of them are prepared for what they see in each other, and what it means for the boxes they’ve allowed themselves to be put into.

When practice is done and he’s showered, he checks his phone.
The 16 messages from Lily are expected with Ilya traveling to Detroit this week. Ilya has a strong but unsupported hatred of Detroit. The ‘vibes are bad Shane’ was the last claim Shane had heard and he is prepared to read even less substantiated claims.
He’s unprepared to see a group chat he’s been added to.
Shane is only a part of a few group chats. One that Rose put together with a bunch of her not out queer friends that he keeps muted but likes to scroll through every once in a while (they have good memes). The group chat with the whole team he only keeps up with for Captain Reasons but keeps it muted too. The one with both of his parents that his mom uses more often than her single thread with him cause ‘Your Dad deserves to be in the loop too’. And finally the one with Jackie and Hayden which is mostly him and Jackie bullying Hayden and Hayden being increasingly frustrated with their antics.

Jackie handed him her phone. Hayden looked at the instagram reel that was playing and saw himself fall repeatedly, spitting words that were beeped out again and again, until he finally discovered the tape and peeled it off. After he had managed to get up and called out Rozanov's name, the video restarted, but this time it was another clip. In the clip you could clearly see a hand carefully taping the blades of Hayden's skates and the golden and black wedding band on the ring finger told him everything he needed to know.
I KNEW IT! He exclaimed. I FUCKING KNEW IT! THAT ASSHOLE! he continued as Ilya’s grinning face filled the screen.
Ilya had no idea what he had just started. Game. fucking. on.

When Hayden gets traded to the Ottawa Centaurs, half way into Shane's second season with the team, Ilya has to find a way to enjoy being on the same team as the most average left winger in the league. It's hard, until he realises what a pleasure it can be to prank the man. Hayden, of course, is not above retaliation.(I am not 100% sure how many chapters there will be of this fic but the rough estimate is probably somewhere between 5-10)
