Summary
What Simon appreciated about Ema was that she never asked him how he was coping. There was no walking on eggshells, no suggestions on how to reintegrate himself into society. The fact that he was a convict was something incidental to his identity, and not something she needed to help him overcome.
Even when things did turn personal, however, Ema didn’t pry or treat him like a project.
Their conversations were casual. Normal. Made him feel like a person.
She was opinionated but not arrogant, sympathetic but not patronising, and was passionate about her line of work in a way that was endearing rather than insufferable.
Ema was everything The Phantom wasn’t, and yet every time he looked at her, he couldn’t help but wonder when the mask was going to slip.
Simon works with a new detective on his first case after being released from prison.

Miles was under no illusion that his feelings were reciprocated. There was a limit to how much he was willing to indulge his wildest fantasies, and that Phoenix might one day confess an undying love, or – heaven forbid – kiss him was so far beyond the realm of possibility that it was laughable. It was so improbable that he wouldn’t allow himself to even entertain the thought, lest his runaway heart got the wrong idea.
(Not that it stopped it some days. Sometimes Miles wished he could open up his ribcage and strangle his stupid heart until it behaved itself.)
That was fine. Miles would be satisfied if they stayed nothing more than friends. That was more than what he could ask for, more than what he deserved. It would be enough.
The problem was, every now and again, Phoenix did something that got his hopes up.
Miles Edgeworth’s relationship with Phoenix Wright was so complicated that it took them a decade to sort it out. Or: on Miles and Phoenix through the years.

Sitting in the detention centre and peering at her Dad through the thick glass, Trucy could feel herself split into two, past and present.
"I need you to do me a favour,” Zak had said before he disappeared from her life forever. It didn’t bode well that Phoenix was echoing those same words back to her now.
Two different favours for two different fathers who had unwittingly found themselves blamed for two different crimes.
Déjà vu, she thought to herself.
But this wasn’t going to end the same way the last one did. She was going to keep Phoenix safe even if she had to commit a crime to do it.
Trucy finds herself assisting with yet another scheme to prevent a father from going to prison.

“Don’t touch those!” The sharp emotion in his voice was startling, but Apollo couldn’t quite place what it was. Klavier sounded scared, almost, but why would he be scared? “How many of those have you eaten?!”
“I don’t know, like… five?” Ema shrugged. “What does it matter? You’ve never complained about me eating your snacks before.”
“Because you don’t know where those have come from, Fraulëin! Do you eat every piece of food you see lying around?!”
“But it wasn’t lying around! It was on your stupid speaker-desk-thing! There was literally a note from your secretary on it!”
“That’s not the point! Anyone could have written that note! For all you know, they could be–.... They could’ve been–....”
And then it hit him.
Klavier thought the chocolates were poisoned.
Following the conclusion of the Misham trial, Apollo and Klavier grow paranoid that Kristoph is trying to kill them. Or: on bonding through shared trauma.

The heart monitor’s rhythmic beeping filled the silence of the hospital room. Apollo’s chest rose and fell in gentle waves as he slept, smooth and even. His body was tightly wrapped in bandages – his arms, his chest, his gorgeous eye – and she dreaded to think what his skin looked like underneath them.
Thalassa shouldn’t be here – she had no right to be here – but how could she stay away?
Thalassa visits Apollo in the hospital after the courtroom bombing, and ruminates on her past decisions.

As Phoenix was about to turn away, a flash of gold caught his eye.
Zak’s locket hung delicately around his neck, its paint peeling from overuse. Phoenix had already seen the picture inside it, but he cracked it open again anyway.
Trucy smiled up at him in her heart-shaped frame. She was younger than Phoenix had ever known her, smiling innocently at the camera, blissfully unaware of the tragedy that was about to befall her.
Somehow, of all the injustices he was forced to face that night, this was what ticked him off the most.

After his best friend dies in a tragic workplace accident, Apollo is desperate for an escape. He takes a sabbatical from his law job, packs up his apartment, and moves to his foster father’s old abandoned farm in Stardew Valley. What he’s looking for is a change of scenery, a project he can sink his teeth into to distract himself from the suffocating weight of Clay’s loss. What he finds is Trucy Wright, his teenage neighbour hellbent on inserting herself into his life, and Klavier Gavin, a famous musician who knows exactly what it’s like to want to hide from your problems.
Apollo doesn’t need friends and he certainly doesn’t need a boyfriend. If he doesn’t let anyone get close, then he won’t get hurt again when they inevitably leave him behind. Besides, he only intends to stay on the farm for a couple of seasons anyway. Why allow himself to get attached to people he’s only going to lose? Why fall for Klavier when he’s only going to break his heart?
However, as Apollo will soon learn, time really does heal all wounds, and love has a way of taking root whether you want it to or not.

Klavier tensed. He kept his smile in place, just like his PR manager taught him, but it felt tight in his cheeks. “I see my reputation precedes me.”
“Oh, your ‘reputation’ precedes you, all right,” she scoffed. “I know all about what you did to Mr. Wright.”

“Can you wrap a bandage over my eye?”
Klavier hesitated. He was usually keen to help Apollo in any way he could, especially now when he was struggling so much, but this was something that he had been wondering about all day. “Is your eye bothering you?”
“In a sense.”
Klavier didn’t know what to make of that.
Apollo had first put the bandage on that morning, claiming he had a sty, but when he got checked out at the hospital, the doctor had taken it off and surmised there was nothing wrong. Klavier had never known Apollo to be a liar, and so the fact he had lied about the bandage was all the evidence he needed to confirm his suspicions that something bad had happened at the space centre.
Sensing Klavier had questions, Apollo let out a sigh. He shut his eyes tight as if mentally debating what to say. “I just…” His shoulders fell. “I just don’t want to perceive anymore.”

Maya had no idea how to respond to that. She looked between her and Phoenix. “Nick? Who’s this?”
Phoenix let out a small, sheepish laugh and rubbed the back of his neck. “She's my uh… She's my daughter.”

If Klavier was honest with himself, if he dug deep into the pits of his heart, it wasn’t Aura’s accusations against Athena that was bothering him – it was her unyielding faith in her brother’s innocence. It was hard to look at someone like Aura Blackquill and not see parts of himself in her.

When Will ventured into the underworld for the first time, he was hoping to find his sister. He did not expect to find Nico di Angelo.
After the tragic death of his sister Gracie, Will Solace hatched a plan - go to the underworld, seek an audience with Hades, and lead her out of the underworld just like Orpheus had tried before him - but his attempts were immediately waylaid by Hades’s mysterious son, Nico. What started off as a rivalry shifted into something more, and soon Will found himself dropping by the underworld every week to spend time with the boy who stole his heart - and whose heart he may have stolen back.
There was just one problem: Nico couldn’t leave the underworld and Will couldn’t stay. Despite the insurmountable odds, Will was determined to make a relationship between them work - if only he could find a way to get Nico out.

Nico shot Percy an accusatory glare, but he annoyingly didn’t baulk at the daggers Nico was sending him, nor did he show any regret in telling Sally about his personal life. “I’m fine.”
“A brave, independent kid like you? I’m sure you are.”
Sally’s praise shouldn’t have pleased him as much as it did, and Nico had to physically stop himself from preening. When was the last time he had received a compliment from a parental figure?
“But... if you’re looking for a place you can use as a homebase, there is plenty of space for you here.”

Summary
Nico had a timer on his forearm that counted down to the moment he met his soulmate. It did not, however, tell him what he was supposed to do once he met them.
Nico di Angelo hated the concept of soulmates. He wanted to choose who he spent his life with, and he certainly didn’t trust a stranger not to break his heart. True love was something that happened to other people; it did not happen to him.
If given the choice, Nico would have gone the rest of his life without ever meeting his soulmate, but no, the universe just had to pair him with Will Solace, a hopeless romantic he had nothing in common with and who thought Nico’s approach to soulmates was cynical and pessimistic.
It couldn’t work. It shouldn’t work…
…but Fate had a plan for him, and Nico was about to learn that falling in love was a long slow descent.

As Hunter Kowalski rattled off the rules - no powers, weapons only, the first to pin the other for three seconds or knock the other out of bounds wins, nothing Reyna didn’t know already - they stared each other down.
Reyna had a good four inches on her at least and a broader build too, but she had seen Thalia fight enough times by now to know she wasn’t above playing dirty if it got her a win. Her electric blue eyes and toothy smile projected a brash confidence that would only make it all the more satisfying when Reyna knocked it off of her.
