I wonder if in this universe Clark was only pretending he was okay before this in the hope that if he pretended long enough that it might end up becoming true?
And that proposing to Lois was part of that since Clark had planned to propose to Lois before he died.
But just before Clark invited Bruce to his place, Clark was finally forced to admit to himself that he was, in reality, the farthest thing from okay he could get.
And now he's probably regretting proposing to Lois and that just makes him feel even worse.
