This entire work was inspired by Silas' line in the final episode of the series:
"How long has He been whispering in your ear?"
And now I have a theory. The theory is that ever since Samuel visited the Shepherd farm and met David, David has learned to listen to his gut feelings. Because they are always right. Always. Without fail. When he is sent to the front, it proves to be an invaluable asset. To the point that his own brother would think him a spy if he wasn't his brother, and knowing of David's absolute love for God, the King, and Gilboa.
But there were 5 times when God's voice was more than a whisper, or a feeling. Five times when God practically shouted - and David listened.
And there was one time, when God was silent. But we'll get to that soon enough.

Summary
Jack takes the bowtie in his hands, threads it around David's neck, adjusts his shirt collar. Lets the pads of his fingers and the blunt tips of his nails scrape the scalp where David’s hair starts, just because he can.
What he doesn’t expect is the shiver, the crack in David’s exhale. They’re the tiniest of signs, virtually undetectable, but Jack is nothing if not an expert in recognising them, searching them out.
“That’s going to be a problem for you,” he murmurs. One small slip and now the bulk of Jack’s plans are irrelevant; David Shepherd won’t need to be brought down by lies when the truth will tarnish him twice as easily.
It’s going to be fun, ruining him. So much more fun than Jack had anticipated.
