Chilton was the kind of guy who was like, "fascinating" when he was watching Reba's interaction with the pet killer whilst he was a captive of the pet killer, and he continue to enjoy meeting with Hannibal even at the beginning of Season 3, if Hannibal and Will wasn't too cruel to Chillyfu, stockholm syndrome would be super easy even though he knows what that. He can even rationalize that as long as Will and Hannibal are preoccupied with keeping Chillyfu and hurting him sometimes but not all the times, they aren't running amok causing havoc, and he can rationalize that it's better to have Will and Hannibal out there keeping guys like Mason Verger and the pet killer in check. Chillyfu is really good at rationalizing -- and really he's not entirely wrong. Hannibal both wants a friend who can understand him and someone he can have power over, which includes them being his even when there's hurt -- these doesn't have to be from the same person and I think Hannibal understands that. Will needs a pet that obeys him. I think chillyhannigram works better than just hannigram because chillyfu is that buffer that prevents Hannibal from directly fucking with Will, he can do that through Chilton because Chilton is Will's pet, and it's also Hannibal getting to fuck with Chilton because Chilton is a person not entirely dumb, he's capable of feeling fear and awe of Hannibal, which Hannibal craves as much as understanding, but he cannot get fear and awe from Will, and probably doesn't want that from Will, his equal (?), Will gets really furious about that, I read both Hannibal and Will as dominant personalities.
It becomes increasingly obvious how desperate Frederick is for approval and affection, or just belonging, he'll tolerate a lot from Will and Hannibal as long as he doesn't feel they will discard him
I was thinking the other day about that Chilton/Barba being brothers thing I was gonna write some day (way way back...) and how much more fun it'd even be if Raf&Sonny were to rescue him from Will and Hanni rather than meeting Will as his partner. 😉
I don't think Chillyfu needs or wants to be rescued from Hannibal or Will though...there'll be so much mixed signals since there'll be bruises and marks but overall, Frederick is healthier and happier, and Will and Hannibal is so controlling, but Frederick is so obedient, and it's not like they stopped Frederick from meeting up with Barba, they drove him there, and really have a solid argument over being so 'protective' over Frederick considering the Gideon thing. ...and I could so imagine Sonny arguing or at least thinking, hey a guy with that many fluffy dogs can't be an evil abuser right? (They can, but in this case he's right).
If Barba and Chilton are brothers, then Barba is the smartmouth who ran around the neighbourhood with his friends while Chilton is more of a shut-in that even their drunk daddy forgot is there. I don't think they would have been close even if they did reconcile later, because Frederick resents Rafael for getting more praise from their mother and is secretly glad and guilty at once that their violent drunk bio dad is fighting with Rafael and forgetting him. I think both Rafa's parents were Cuban-Americans in Law and Order -- but AU where he's bros with Frederick, Chilton could be their mother's maiden name, and the irony is that for all that Barba fought with his dad all the time, he still sees himself as his father's son, whereas as soon as their dad is in a coma or Frederick moves out, he uses his mother's name and stops speaking Spanish.
I read a pretty cute one where Frederick changed his name, cause break with the family and Rafael's forever worried sick about him. So when the Gideon shit happens he's freaking out and when Will hides Frederick later, Raf and Sonny go see him, cause Raf's worried, but finds out Will's really good for Frederick.
I really liked that, cause S.O. fucking caring about the poor guy. ;)
Timeline; So Rafa was introduced in Season 14 (2012), and Sonny in 16 (2014)...and Raul got into Hannibal in 2013, Chilton got framed at the end of season 2 (2014?)...so Sonny is the new boyfriend, the guy who is really curious about Barba's life.
Will Sonny have inappropriate twincest fantasies he at least have the tact to never mention out loud?
With chillyhannigram, who will be the one who quips that Chilton is a doctor dating another doctor? Two if you count Professor Graham. I think Will and Sonny can get along due to the dogs and shared fascination with criminal minds, and Sonny will probably think Hannibal is fascinating, the chillyhannigram household need to keep all skeletons well hidden if Sonny is over because I think he's a lot less blinded by personal feelings than Rafael. It is my headcannon that Hannibal stops killing when he got Frederick -- he's got less time and more in-house entertainment.
I've been thinking, if Rafael and Frederick were twins, but then they drifted apart and stopped talking to each other, and then Frederick disappears, the police won't file a missing persons report because it looked like Frederick just packed up and moved, this is something that continued to bother Rafael and that he confided to Sonny about...then many years later, Sonny and Rafael runs into Will and/or Hannibal with 'Bunny"...
Nothing they can do, Frederick is a grown man who publicly drifted apart from his family before he fell off the grid...and he's so well care for it looks like a younger cousin, maybe it's Sonny who saw him first and said he saw somebody who look like younger Raf with fluffy hair. Hannibal seem like the type that would delight in blocking access -- and not want cops around, while Will would just be protective and sensitive to the fact that Frederick doesn't like to be around anybody but Will or Hannibal.
I think Hannibal will find the existence of a twin fascinating, but they prefer their dynamic of teaming up on their one bunny....and Chilton is definitely the most bunny-like of all Raul Esparza characters I've seen. Have you ever read Gravity Center by NewWonder back in 2014 (Yakimono AU)? Just absolutely delicious how Chilliful had canon annoying traits but was still so cute, and sexy, and got described as rabbit like multiple times, because he is. I'm so sad that Bryan Fuller didn't go that way, partly because he ships Hannigram but probably also because Hannibal was filmed in Toronto and Esparza is tied to New York.
Rewatching the Hannibal series now, Chilton has so many bunny expressions and postures, but I think his voice gets a bit bunny like too, I bet both Will and Hannibal love making their bunny squeaks.
My god, I could just see the whiskers wiggling. There is a scene where Chilton is saying something and Hannibal is looming behind him, Chillifu was just so bunny-like, and Hannibal the fox. Definitely the scene where he was at the party Hannibal was throwing trying to not look suspicious, he looked so smol in his brown jacket.

Chillifu will stay where you leave him but Rafa teleports between frames. In "Beautiful Frame", the one with the open kimono line (WHY haven't we see Raul Esparza wear a kimono yet?)...the squad is in Raf's office, cut away to just him and Nick and Liv, he's re-entering his office with a bag of take-out, he's already halfway through his wrap, and then after he throws Nick what is probably a burger, he's got a new one -- what if the all the times we see him eat on screen are about the only time he eats though? like between court and talking to clients.

Omg, yes, I been pointing that scene out to people forEVER now, like, it's like Raf wolfed down half his sandwich on the way from collecting the bag at the elevator bag to the office and the others do that TV thing of just nibbling theirs.
Raul is very European in his eating-in-camera-thing, like in a lot of European (not UK) shows, they'll just nom shit right up, talk around it, etc, but yanks almost never do it on screen. My mate and I always joke about him just being hungry. "Fuck it, we'll have them eat in this scene, or we're gonna lose Raul..." ;)
So second half of Season 3 of Hannibal had almost no dining scenes because Hannibal was now in jail / mental hospital, but some how he still got to cook for Chilton when Chillifu visited him, Sanguinaccio Dolce, dark chocolate pudding with cow blood. I bet that scene was like that because Bryan need to lure Raul to fly over to Toronto with Janice's cooking. Also, Chilton dresses better in Season 3. Meanwhile, unfortunately, the later season of SVU gave Barba OOC bad scripts, stop dressing him in fashionable clothes, and there was less snacking scenes.
Chilton pretends he has no Cuban heritage but Hannibal wait till his guard is down when he's in bed to talk to him in Spanish and get Frederick to answer back, Will think it's hot, and Will is just a bloodhound who likes prying out things that Frederick tries to hide.
That's one interesting possibility, Hanni snatches up Frederick after realising he has a beautiful singing voice, only speaks to him in Spanish, maybe teaches him Latin, Lithuanian and French. Years and years later, when Hannibal starts bringing Frederick out to some social events, the pleb Baltimore upperclass just assumes that Frederick is Hannibal's European boyfriend and only ever speak to him through Hannibal, if at all, since many have traveled all over the world but never left their American resorts. Will Graham however could speaks French because he was a cop in Louisiana.
Nobody ever reported Frederick missing, he's estranged from his family and he never got any friends since he was focused on his studies and hiding his background, trying to become someone else, Hannibal ran into him early on and that's what fascinated him, because he himself was in the process of changing too, he left behind Europe as was setting up in America, having done anything attention-getting yet. He misses Italy and doesn't like Baltimore much, it's just a good place for him not to run into anyone from Europe, and then there is Frederick who does know enough latin to sing some songs, as he did in church as a boy, he doesn't go to church anymore but he does miss the music.
Eventually, Hannibal brings Frederick out more, drives him across the country when Frederick has pretty much forgotten how to speak English, and maybe Frederick finally learns that Hannibal's last name is Lector when they get married. If anybody has met Frederick before when he was checking out Baltimore because he was planning to move there, they won't remember him because he has a different family name now, different accent, and a man's looks can change a lot between his 20s and 30s.
Hannibal is fond of having Frederick sing for him while sitting on his lap, sometimes in the middle of sex, especially since Frederick often blushes when he sings even if no one has started touching him yet.
I think when Frederick is in his 20s and Hannibal is in his 30s they could run into each other at some hotel, motel, or bed and breakfast inn -- sometimes people don't sell the house they live in till they have a new one, but depending on the market and finance some actually actually sell and live in motels while looking for a new house, especially Frederick isn't sure where he wants to live yet, but he was moving from someplace expensive to the cheaper south, and Hannibal was there because he wasn't quite sure where he wanted to settle after Europe. Maybe it could be New Orleans and so Will actually had seen Frederick before Hannibal snatched him up...
Frederick should already be Hannibal's pet when they both meet Will and Hanni becomes fascinated by him. Still looks like Tick Tick!Esparza, very twinky and twitchy, but a well-behaved bunny.
