Comment on Sharp Edges, Present Questions

  1. Shit, I just shed a few myself. Thank you so much for your comment; as you probably know, such a detailed analysis and appreciation of an author’s work means the world to any creator.

This show has a problem with showing nuance in characters, and then maintaining the fact there is only two sides. Elves good, humans bad, and for some reason it’s just the humans that have to make up for millennia of bad blood. Especially when most of it was inflicted on the humans.

Believe it or not, the comparison to Prometheus was kind of an on-the-spot thing. I was just wondering if humans would have found a way to preserve the story of Elarion without mentioning her name. It turned out better than expected, so I decided to keep it in.

Honestly, this comes from my fascination with anything and everything related to fae lore. I headcanon, and the show pretty much confirms it, that the Startouch elves are pretty much the Fae of the TDP universe. Can’t lie, but anyone who knows they’re talking to them consider it common sense to never take anything you say at face value. And yes, honest truths are often more damning than lies.

*reciprocates toast* Don’t worry, that will come next chapter. Now that Aaravos has established Callum can’t trust anyone else and that fighting him is a waste of time, how hard can it be to convince him to abandon everything and come live with him for a few decades? Surely this won’t create any paternal feelings and patterns of behavior, he is far beyond such things. *wink*

The show did “attempt” to address Rayla’s departure, and I think at the beginning it was pretty much what I wanted on Callum’s end. Callum was clearly pushing down his feelings because he and Rayla were on a mission and there was more pressing things to worry about. What I don’t like, is that Rayla doesn’t seem to think she did something wrong. In S3, Rayla reunited with Ethari and sees how her seemingly abandoning her mission made him believe that both Runaan and her died. She despised the fact that her parents supposedly ran away and abandoned their mission. But that snag at the beginning could have been easily rectified by Rayla realizing *that’s exactly what she did*. She got scared, and ran. It could have been a huge moment for her character if she had showed any amount of introspection and realized what she put Callum through by just, leaving him for two years. Not these awkward interactions that make Callum out to be irrational. Speaking of Callum, I assumed based off the opening scene that Callum would be bottling up his emotions over the season (something Rayla did multiple times) show a few moments, possibly under prodding from Aaravos, that he was hiding a lot of fear and anger underneath. Then, somewhere near the end, Callum and Rayla conveniently get left alone for a bit (Like f*cking WASTED campfire scene) Rayla makes an off-handed comment that’s the last straw for Callum before he erupts at her. After Callum says his piece, Rayla offers an olive branch, and they start slowly to rebuild their friendship which follows them into S6.

That is one of many ways this severe breach of trust could have been handled with finesse. Unfortunately, it seems the writers lost that in S4 and we are stuck with the consequences.

Sorry about the rant. Thank you again for leaving such a wonderful comment, I’m going to get back to writing now <3
