Ah, the foreshadowing on this one is brutal. Also sometimes really horrifying to think about what the crossing would have been like with kids, I don't really always think that one through. If nothing, the Plague times have taught us that even in the worst of times, there has to be moments of normalcy, and this was the moment you gave us. I liked her missing the family connection too, a rift that wide couldn't have not hurt, if that makes sense? It's the little moments too.
Also think it's really subtle but you show who Turgon was before he lost her and hints at what he'll be like after.
For not thinking you can write slice of life, this is a really good example of one, even if it's a less than typical life.
This story made me cry while I was writing it. It is so damn unfair that she died. I don't know why I like her so much, I think it's a lot to do with her being ready to go into the unknown with her man - she must have really loved him and believed in him - and that she thought they could keep their little girl safe... They weren't about revenge so much as finding a new life, pioneers if you like, and when it became incredibly dark and dangerous there was still the love and being together.
The Professor has occasionally made me really angry, and this is one of those times.
(I thought of you and the 'slice of life' thing while I was writing it, yes. Whatever 😏)
