Yeah, agreed. At some point Iroh needs to ask a) do I love my nephew, and b) do I care about the Fire Nation? If the answer to either is yes, he needs to get up and do something before things explode and he ends up with a dead nephew and a Fire Nation locked in civil war or occupied by the other nations. I feel like he's being extremely irresponsible here, and it drives me crazy.
And the poor kid gets all of a day's notice, during which he's preparing to maybe die fighting his sister! Like, "this is your destiny, good luck, byeeee!" That ... doesn't match up to Iroh at literally every other time before that in canon.
I understand that there was originally supposed to be a season 4. That probably explains why the ending of Avatar the Last Airbender feels rushed in places, and there are a couple of loose threads that aren't tied off as well as one would expect from the quality of the writing of season 2 and early-mid season 3. Like Iroh and Zuko's destinies. Still frustrating, though.
