Comment on These Twists and Turns of Fate

  1. Excellent piece.

I loved what you did with Steph and Cass, but I'm not tbh sure about Batman, at least in the later parts. Everything up through War Games clicked with me, but when he confronts her at the end it came off more like he was transphobic as opposed to just being a jerk. But more importantly I thought you'd already rounded off his relationship with Steph quite nicely, at the hospital bed sequence (assuming it wasn't a dream, anyway; I thought it came off more like a real event that she just didn't recognize as reality). So, it seemed like an unusual reversal in both of their character development for him to backtrack in that way and come out against her, in place of just being relieved that she was still alive, and merely failing to not be (outwardly) a jerk while expressing himself.

Bruce's characterization is very difficult to handle, but you need to remember that Steph does think that his acceptance of her was a dream. Bruce IS relieved that she is alive, but he's shitty at expressing that. Steph's death hit him hard--this is the SECOND death of one of his charges that he has on his hands. And to find out that she "ran away" from her (perceived) responsibilities is very upsetting to Bruce. And Bruce is a little impulsive when it comes to things that are personal--if he had had time, it would have been better. And because of that initial reaction he had, Steph avoids him afterwards. I tried to leave their relationship arc open-ended; there is certainly a better relationship on the horizon for them, but both of them need to WANT it first. Because Steph, who associates Bruce as a father figure subconsciously, and thus projects her issues with Arthur onto him, doesn't WANT to let him apologize after the slap. After Blackest Night though, I think she will.
