Turnabout Ironsides

Summary:

“After waking to this year's early Autumn cold snap, I decided to dig out last winter's heater from the storage room, only to find that the cheap old thing was busted. Presently, it sat in pieces on the floor between the television and the couch, the heater having been gutted by a rusty, old screwdriver I had happened to find. Maya sat on the couch behind me, watching her usual true crime documentaries, today's episode being about drug gangs and their corrupt lawyers. Between the TV program's over-the-top editing, Maya's loud and excessive reactions, and the heater's convoluted troubleshooting diagram in its instruction booklet, I was making zero progress.”

40 years after the events of "Breaking Bad," Officer Kaylee Ehrmantraut stands trial for the shooting of a retired police captain. Who can she call to represent her in court? Who will prosecute the case if Edgeworth is busy? Will Wright have to buy a new heater, or will he have to hire a repairman?

Chapter 1: Prologue

September 30th, 10:55 a.m.

"Alright, fine, Kaylee. I believe you. But why are we here?"

"..."

"... You want to arrest him."

"I want us to arrest him."

"Are you kidding me?'

"I'm afraid not."

"You want me to arrest him?"

"Us."

"Do you realize what kind of target that would put on my back? This time next week, I could be dead, like, grabbed in the middle of the night, driven out some place where no one can hear me screaming, and then I get chopped to pieces and then I get fed to the fishes! I'd be looking over my shoulder for the rest of my life. Jesus Christ, Kaylee, if what you said was true, there's enough evidence for them to arrest you, too!"

"No, they won't."

"No? How do you figure that?'

"Because after we bring him in, I'm turning myself in."

"…"

"…"

"… Are you serious?"

"..."

"... You're serious."

"..."

"Okay, then. Why not arrest him yourself? He's just an old man in a nursing home. Dude needs help changing his diapers. What's there to be afraid of?"

"I need backup. And you're the only one I trust."

"... Really?"

"Yes."

"..."

"..."

"Okay. Fine. I'll do it. You stay here. I'll be right back with an old fart in cuffs."

"Not a chance. You're my backup. You'd screw it up somehow."

"Heh. When you're right, you're right. Lead the way, Ironsides."

Officers Kaylee Ehemantraut and Frye Berger exited their patrol vehicle and crossed the parking lot, barely glancing at the bright, amateurly painted mural of an overly cartoonish yellow sunrise, passing the smiling cardboard cutout of the Blue Badger, who waved at them as they walked through the automatic sliding doors of Sunrise Springs Assisted Living Facility. The glass doors slid shut behind them.
