Chapter Text

After a long journey, Loulan, the new Pure Consort has arrived at the Rear Palace.

She, along with Renpu, Sourin, and around 50 other ladies - in - waiting, have entered the Garnet Pavillion.

Loulan decided to carefully remove her winter coat, and the crown that signifies her status as the Pure Consort, and relaxed on a seat.

Then, the following night came. The night the Emperor will visit him.

Loulan prepared for it, but she is still nervous and concerned.

At last, the Emperor arrived, he greeted her and had tea before going to bed.

The Emperor then noticed the concern on Loulan's eye. Normally it's because this will the first he will bed the consort, however, this feels more deeper than normal.

"Loulan, is something wrong?", the Emperor asked.

Loulan's eyes widened. He noticed that she is thinking of something else. Left with no other choice, Loulan decided to explain her situation with her clan, the Shi Clan. From the production of weapons to the abuse and death of the Banished Princess, the daughter of Taihou, one of the previous Emperor's victims, and the mother of her half - sister, Suirei, all at the hands of her own mother, Shenmei, who did all this because she was not visited by the Previous Emperor when she was a High Consort, and her father, Shishou, did not do anything because he loves her.

After the explanation, the Emperor sighed. "Even after death, my father still causes trouble."

Loulan sighed, "I know, my my half - sister was also ordered of assassinating your brother, and I do not know when this will happen, or if he'll be able to survive the attempt."

The Emperor then straighten his posture, "Fine, I will help you. Unfortunately though, I will not be able to spare Suirei from execution, she has to figure out a way to escape."

Loulan replied. "It's fine, your Majesty. Although i am asking, what can I do to repay your kindness?"

The Emperor thought for a moment, and then answered, "Well, have you heard of the Mi Clan?"

Loulan just shook her head, which clearly means she doesn't know.

'Well, it is a clan that helps the Imperial Family within the shadows. Its members were often from different families instead of being birthed from the clan itself. The head, Vice Minister Lu is looking for an apprentice."

Loulan thought for a moment, "Well, it will depend on him."

"Alright then, I see to it that he will be informed.", the Emperor said.

"Also, if you may be, can I ask you to not call me Loulan in private or casual settings?", Loulan asked.

"Very well, what do you want me to call you?", he asked in return.

Loulan smiled, this one genuine, "Shisui."

"Oh, how did you get that name?", the Emperor asked another question.

"It was my sister's birth name, until my mother stripped it because she hates that she bears the clan name in her name.", Shisui explained, giving a sad smile.

"Alright then, Shisui. I will have to still stay here thought even if you are not interested to be my concubine, as it would get your father's attention if you are visited.", the Emperor stated.

Shisui replied, "How about do it once a week, when you are not visiting your other consorts.", the Emperor nodded.

"Now then, I want to know you a little more, what are your interests?", he asked her.

Shisui gave a big grin and answered, "Insects."

Now that was peculiar. But then again, the cat that caught the eyes of his brother and his consort, Gyokuyou, are interested in medicine and poison of all things.

It was the morning the day after Shisui's confession to the Emperor, she is currently eating breakfast when Renpu whispered to her something.

It was an invitation to a lesson for the four high consorts. The subject is ways to pleasure the Emperor at bed. She does not want to join, she and the Emperor had already agreed that she won't do that kind of duty. However, if she doesn't accept, it might paint her as arrogant to the other consorts, so she has no choice but to agree.

Upon arriving at the place where the lesson will take place, Shisui realized she is the last consort to arrive. As she take a seat, she bowed to the other consorts, Precious Consort Gyokuyou, Wise Consort LIhua, and Virtuous Consort Lishu, the last in particular reminded her of what the Emperor said, he said that Lishu is only consort by name, he is only consort to protect from her own family. Shisui was curious as to why, but then, the lesson is about to begin.

Shisui just decided to not listen on the one speaking and she just the manual provided to her to Renpu, who was weirdly hooked on what's is inside. She then looked at the other consorts, Gyokuyou seems to be enjoying herself, Lihua is very intrigued, while Lishu is constantly fainting, which is normal for someone without sexual experience who just learned what sexual intimacy is.

Eventually, the lessons ended, Gyokuyou was delighted, Lihua is remebering the process, Lishu is slamming her head against a pillar, saying she will not do it, and Shisui is unbothered. As she takes a sip of tea, her eyes went to the speaker who was talking to a young man, who just looked like someone that eavesdropped a conversation. The speaker is a young man that is the same age as her, but she is about a little bit taller than lishu, she has green - shaded hair, with a portion of it tied by a light blue ribbon, blue eyes, a couple freckles, and is wearing a light green aoqun and burgundy skirt. This is Maomao, an apothecary and a former poison taster of the Precious Consort (more on that later). This girl had piqued Shisui's interest, but as the girl looked back at her, she looked away to not gain any attention. And beforelong, she stood up and left earlier than the other consorts.

The night after this, the Emperor once again visited for their talk, this is when she noticed the Emperor's big smile. And considering what happened a few days earlier, Shisui has a guess on why the Emperor's mood is very positive.

"I take it that the lessons the consorts got were very effective.", Shisui guessed.

"It is, you're not gonna use it aren't you?", the Emperor asked.

"No, your Majesty, I wasn't listening to the lesson. I find the girl that taught interesting though.", Shisui answered.

"Oh, her, that is Maomao, she is currently living with my brother at his residence as his servant. She is from the Pleasure District.", the Emperor explained.

"Okay, but it seems that she is more than meets the eye.", Shisui wondered.

"Well, she is an apothecary, she actually one worked as a poison taster for Gyokuyou as payment for saving her daughter, Lingli, she also Lihua and Lishu from the brink of death on one occasion.", the Emperor replied.

"I see, so she has practically saved the future generations of your bloodline.", Loulan thought, with the Emperor nodding.

"Oh, by the way, I have talked to Vice Minister Lu, he is interested on taking you as his apprentice, that is if you will accept.", the Emperor said.

Shisui has thought for a moment, and then gave her decision. "I will accept his offer your Majesty."

"Very well, I will inform him. From now on, you will be now a consort by name only.", the Emperor followed her decision.

"Oh, that will be perfect timing your majesty, my disguise has just arrived.", Shisui, leaving the Emperor confused. She went to her closet and showed a maid outfit.

"You wanted to disguise as a maid?", the Emperor asked, with Shisui nodding enthusiastically.

"But what about your presence as consort, what if my brother comes here for inspection?", he asked again.

"Oh, my ladies - in - waiting will take turns disguising as me.", Shisui answered. This is when the Emperor realizes why all her ladies look the same as her.

"You've planned this quite well.", the Emperor responded amused.

The next morning, Shisui is now wearing a maid outfit running when she bumped into someone.

"Oh, my apologies.", Shisui said.

"It's okay, I was in a hurry.", the girl replied. She is shorter to her, with brown eyes, brown hair braided to buns with yellow ribbons, and is wearing a maid outfit as well.

"I'll see you later then, uh...", Shisui is practically asking for her name.

"Xiaolan, and you?", the girl replied.

"Shisui", Shisui introduced herself, and set off to different paths. This is when Shisui saw a cricket on the grass, and leaped to try and catch it.

As she is eating lunch, Shisui was informed of what happened at the ceremony that the Imperial Brother had lead.

'So, that was Suirei's plan to kill him.', Shisui thought, she then prayed to the gods hoping she will be able to escape safe and sound.

A few days later, Suirei was found dead, or is she?

The Emperor then arrived to ask her something.

"Shisui, your sister was found dead. But I have a suspicion that she had this planned out.", the Emperor told her.

"Your suspicions were right, your Majesty. When she was younger, she learned how to create a drug that can replicate a death - like state. But by the time she reported as dead, she has regained conciousness and escaped. I am just glad she'll be able to escape safely, but the drug has side effects and her left arm was paralyzed. She is lucky her memory was not wiped.", Shisui explained.

"That's reassuring. now, for the current situation, the Garden Party is happening in under two weeks, you need to prepared because you will be introduced to the eyes of the Court.", the Emperor followed up, with Shisui nodding.

At last, the Garden Party has arrived, when Shisui walked towards the Emperor for greetings, she maintained her silent personality as Loulan, the Emperor is quite amused on how Loulan could switch her personalities left and right, this made him think that Shisui is really qualified to be a member of the Mi Clan. Shishou, Shisui's father, and the current Prime Minister was amused at the attention that his daughter got. Unfortunately though, that was cut short, as Jinshi arrived with a bouquet of flowers with blue roses. This caused everyone's attention to go to him, which caused Shishou to grumble in anger. Shisui was immediately impressed by the flowers, who knew the person behind it, as the Emperor told her about it the night prior.

A few weeks later, Shisui was roaming around when she saw Lingli chasing down a cat. When they went into a passage, she panicked as they have accidentally found Suirei's escape route. She followed them, by the time she reached them, the cat has leapt mid air, dodging Maomao, causing her to catch it instead. She immediately gave the cat to Maomao, and left quickly to not raise any suspicion.

When she arrived back at the Garnet Pavilion, she was greeted at the seating room by the Emperor and the head of the Mi Clan and her master, Vice Minister Lu. She tried to ask for their patience as she will change but the Emperor said there is no need, because this is the first time he saw her in her maid outfit.

"Shisui, I want you to meet your master and the Head of the Mi Clan, Vice Minister Lu.", the Emperor said, with Shisui bowing.

"So, what were you doing earlier?", the Emperor asked.

Shisui then explained the situation.

"Also, your Majesty, I recommend you let Princess Lingli keep that cat, I've heard that animals like her could bond with children.", Shisui said, the Emperor of course did exactly just later on.

A caravan arrived at the palace three days after. Shisui to a stall that serve jasmine tea, as points to purchase it, she noticed that someone else wants to buy it, Maomao, who accompanying one of her friends, Xiaolan.

"Oh, hey Shisui.", Xiaolan greeted her.

"Hello, Xiaolan.", Shisui greeted back.

"So, how was the cat doing?", she asks Maomao.

"She's doing well, she is now become a playmate to the princess.", Maomao answered.

Shisui smiled internally and thought, 'So his Majesty followed my recommendation.'

Sometime after they met, Maomao strangely asked Shisui to provide her moths. At first, Shisui was confused, until the Emperor gave her the answer. Maomao, in order to impress the envoys from Shaoh, has decided to dress his brother as a woman and made him dance under the moonlight like a Moon Fairy, with the moths used to give ambience to the dance setting.

A few days later, the night after the Emperor entered the Shrine of Choosing, he visited Shisui again, although he noticed that Shisui is looking at something. When he asked her, what she is doing, Shisui asked what color was the object, the Emperor then realized that she is colorblind. From what maomao said, people like her sometimes cannot detect certain types of colors.

"Shisui, is this what Shishou is planning to make you the Mother of the Nation?", the Emperor asked, with Shisui only nodding.

"Well, unfortunately for him though, that plan was cut short, as Maomao managed to beat it herself last night.", the Emperor said.

"Is it just me or does she qualify as member of the Mi Clan?", Shisui thought.

"She doesn't need to, the clan where she hails from are full of eccentric people.", the Emperor said, hinting somethings.

"Wait, Maomao has noble blood?", Shisui was shocked.

"Yeah, but she doesn't accept her blood father.", the Emperor responded.

"Who?", Shisui asked.

"The Grand Commandant.", the Emperor answered.

"Your telling me, if Maomao accepts him or if she is recognized as the only daughter of the La Clan head, she would practically be the same ranking as a High Consort?", Shisui's eyes widened, with the Emperor nodding.

A few weeks, she received news of the attack at the Imperial Brother during the Hunt led by her father.

'If I want to quell this rebellion, I have to act quickly.', Shisui thought.

Meanwhile, Suirei has returned at the Rear Palace now disguised as a eunuch named Tian.

"So, Suirei has returned?", the Emperor asked.

"Yes, she is able to enter by disguising herself as a eunuch.", Shisui answered.

'Huh, just like my brother', the Emperor thought.

The next day, Shisui finds out that Xiaolan's contract is expiring and is asking tips on how to find a good job.

Shisui taught her how, first they have to go to the bathhouse. Shisui decided to jump on the pool, only to realize that it is still too hot. So she quickly got out, when she was cooling down, she noticed that Maomao is looking at her weirdly.

"Huh, Maomao, what are you looking at?", Shisui asked.

"I just realized that your clothes make you look smaller.", Maomao answered.

"What's that supposed to mean?", Shisui crossed her arms, eyebrows raised, realizing that she is looking at her breasts.

"A little hobby.", Maomao said.

After taking a bath, Shisui taught Xiaolan how to remove someone else's body hair, this could help her make connections.

A day later, she met Seki - u, one of Lady Gyokuyou's newest ladies - in - waiting.

When Lishu arrived there unexpectedly though, she silently escape to prevent getting recognized by her.

After getting dressed, she met with Suirei for the first time after a while.

"It's been a while, sister.", Shisui hugged her.

"So, is the plan set in motion?", Suirei asked.

"We just need more time, we need something crucial to happen before we continue.", Shisui answered.

Suirei nodded, then went off to visit the grave of Taihou, her grandmother.

The next day, she heard that Xiaolan has accidentally broken the ice that she ordered to be sent, so she went to her to check if she's fine. Upon arriving, she saw the ice cream, realizing this will be the compensation, she decided to eat only a portion, since she knew her cup will be waiting at her pavillion.

A week later though, Suirei told her something bad, Maomao is starting to figure out their plan, she is not sure how to save her. That is until the Emperor gave her an idea on his visit.

"How about you take Maomao to your home.", the Emperor gave his suggestion.

"But your Majesty, I am practically kidnapping her.", Shisui was hesitant, until she realized that this could also reveal to the Grand Commandant the plans of her clan's rebellion.

"Do you see what I mean?", the Emperor asked her, with her nodding in agreement.

"Alright then, but i have one condition. After the attack, can you please spare the children", Shisui asked, and the Emperor agreed.

The next day, Shisui and Suirei has confronted Maomao, with Suirei promising to teach her the resurrection drug, Maomao gave in and follow them. After a long journey, they eventually entered a small town where a boy named Kyou - u greeted but not before getting smacked on the head. By evening, they attended a festival wearing fox masks.

This is when Shisui said this line. "Insects never survive the winter, they will only leave their children behind."

The following day however, problems started to arise. Maomao has discovered the feifa workshop. And eventually, Shenmei found her and tried to execute her for going into restricted areas. In order to save her, Shisui, now dressed as Loulan, told her mother that Maomao will be making the Immortality drug. Shenmei accepted and they went to the stronghold. As Maomao is working, Kyou - u tried to help her escape. When Shenmei found them, she did not even listen to the reasons, she is already planning to punish Kyou - u, Maomao was furious and called her a wretched old hag, and took the blame for Kyou - u. Loulan then asked Shenmei to give her the capital punishment, the Taibon, knowing full well that she will be fine.

When they were leaving, Shenmei her something horrifying.

"You know Loulan, if you hadn't told me the Taibon, I would've sent her to the gunpowder workers to be raped.", Shenmei said with an evil grin, which caused Shisui to flinch in shock.

As she looks into the horizon, suddenly she finds a campsite ahead, realizing it was the Forbidden Army. 

It's time to commence the plan, she first gave the resurrection drug to the children. While the others drank it unknowingly, Kyou - u drank it himself, knowing this is the only way he'll survive, accepting the possible death of his parents and relatives. She then went to the gunpowder workshop where the workers fled because she threw a torch into the gunpowder, destroying it in the process. When she recovered she was found by Maomao, who escaped the Taibon with the help of a soldier sent by Suirei and Kyou - u earlier, the soldier also fled after that along with a couple books.

Shisui decided to tell Maomao her past and the fact that the Emperor knew about her plan. Maomao was then told the reason for her being brought here, as she needs to take care of the children once they wake up. In order to give good luck for rest of her plan, Maomao gave her hairstick and placed it on her outfit instead of her hair.

Upon arriving at Shenmei's room, the Forbidden Army has made their move. They intentionally caused an avalanche in order to weaken them and then charged. Eventually her father, Shishou has died, Jinshi, or rather the Moon Prince looked for the others when Shisui aimed a feifa at him when he entered a corridor. She made him follow her to room where Shenmei and Suirei were staying until the fight is over. Shisui explained the history of their clan, and Suirei's Imperial Blood.

In a fit of rage, Shenmei took Shisui's feifa and tried to shoot her, but it misfired, killing in the process.

Shisui sighed in relief, "Well, looks like its finally time to reveal it."

Jinshi was confused, until she took a something from her hidden pocket revealing a pendant of a certain clan.

"You're a Mi Clan member?!", Jinshi was shocked.

"Yes, Master Jinshi, and the Emperor also knows about this", Shisui told him.

Shisui then asks if she can scar his right cheek, to honor her dead mother's wish, she will only tell them that Shenmei did it, so Jinshi agreed.

By the time Basen arrived, the scar is now there, realizing its "perpetrator" is dead, he sighed in relief and sheathed his sword. 

When they exited the ruins of the fortress, Shisui has finally reunited with Maomao, who hugged her, and much to Jinshi's shock, she shed a tear. Shisui tried to give the hairpin back to Maomao, but Maomao told her to keep it as a sign of their friendship. Shisui then left Maomao and Jinshi to make up for lost time, while she returned to comfort Suirei. Jinshi then eventually told them that the children has awoken. Luckily all of them did not lose their memory. With Kyou - u literally already running around camp, chased by some of the soldiers, causing Shisui to laugh.

They then returned to the capital. The Emperor is happy that Shisui's plan worked, but also gave his condolences for her parents, with Shisui just saying it's fine. Like she asked, the children and Suirei were spared, and were sent to stay at the Southern Imperial Villa with Ah Duo. Kyou - u though was old enough to move freely anywhere so Maomao let him stay at her old shop at the Verdigris House, although the Madam will still make him pay rent, much to Maomao's dismay.

Maomao also keeps her job as lady - in - waiting to now Empress Gyokuyou, but instead of poison taster, she is now tasked to take care of the Imperial Children. The job of poison taster was instead given to Shisui, who is now tasked of protecting the Empress as a member of the Mi Clan. When they arrived, they were hugged by Yinghua, Ailan, Guiyuan, and Seki - u, obviously missing Maomao, Shisui just accepted the affection. Shisui was also given her lady - in - waiting outfit and ate lunch with the others.

"I hope Xiaolan is okay, wherever she is.", Shisui thought.

Little did they know, Xiaolan is still at the Rear Palace, now working for someone else.

"So, how are settling here Chou - u?", Shisui asked Kyou - u, who's been renamed in in order to not get any suspiscions.

"I am settling well here Shisui, the Madam wants me to pay rent though.", Chou - u answered.

"Don't worry, maomao is negotiating with her, but I can't guarantee she would agree.", Shisui said.

After visiting the Verdigris House, they went on to visit Suirei at the Southern Imperial Villa.

When they arrived, Shisui was hugged by the children, who of course hugged back.

She then found Suirei, who she noticed is wearing masculine clothing.

"You still did not bother to change into a dress, huh?", Shisui asked.

"It is more convenient and light, plus Lady Ah Duo also does and encourages it.", Suirei answered.

After that, Maomao and Shisui returned to the Empress' Residence, just in time for Gyokuyou to call all the ladies - in - waiting to the seating room.

"It seems that The Virtuous Consort Lishu has invited me to a tea party to congratulate me for being promoted to Empress.", Gyokuyou said.

Yinghua responded happily, "Oh that's wonderful, we will go right away."

But Gyokuyou interjected, "Although, I wonder why it was specifically said here to bring Maomao."

All the ladies, including Maomao and Shisui, wondered why, all except for Seki -u, smiling knowing what this means.

By afternoon, Empress Gyokuyou, Seki - u, Shisui and Maomao, now donning her lady - in - waiting out, were now on their way to the Diamond Pavillion.

Upon arriving, they were greeted by the head lady - in - waiting, Kanan.

"Good afternoon, to you. Empress Gyokuyou.", Kanan greeted them.

She then led them to the venue of the tea party, with Maomao not failing to notice Huairen and the other ladies' distrustful looks. This is when she notices that the pavillion is cleaner than before, which is weird since Lishu's ladies - in - waiting prefer to gossip and clean.

Lishu greeted them, "Good afternoon to you, Lady Gyokuyou, and congratulations on becoming the Empress."

"Thank you, Consort Lishu.", Gyokuyou responded with a smile.

"Your welcome, and also, welcome back, Maomao.", Lishu said.

"Thank you, Lady Lishu, but I can't help but wonder why you specifically said to bring me here.", Maomao wondered.

Lishu smiled, took a deep breath, and said, "Alright, you can show yourself."

What both Maomao and Shisui did not expect is to see a rather familiar bring out the tea.

"Xiaolan?!", they are both shocked to see her.

"Hello, Maomao, Shisui, long time no see.", Xiaolan responded.

"Lady Lishu, what is the meaning of this?", Maomao asked.

"Xiaolan is now my lady - in - waiting.", Lishu answered.

Both Maomao and Shisui were shocked, by deducing it, Shisui assumed Xiaolan was hired sometime after they left. This is when they both noticed that Seki - u is smiling.

"Do you know any of this, Lady Seki - u?", Maomao asked.

"Yes, but I kept a secret because she wanted to surprise you.", Seki - u answered.

Maomao sighed, and then she said, "Well, I'm happy for you Xiaolan, it seems like we will still be seeing each other every so often."

Xiaolan smiled, "Thank you, Maomao."

The tea party went on without any problems.

About a week, Consort Lihua has gave birth to her son and the Second Prince, Nanchuan.

So, Gyokuyou decided to visit her, because she wanted to congratulate her, and because Lingli keeps insisting on meeting her new brother.

Lingli is very excited and can't seem to behave, so Maomao promised to her that if she did, she teach her everything she had learned. This of course caused Lingli to stop, much to Hongniang's relief and Shisui laughing.

When they arrived at the Crystal Pavillion around noon. They found that Lishu is also visiting, accompanied by Xiaolan and her other ladies - in - waiting.

"Why hello there, Consort Lishu, are you visiting Consort Lihua as well?", Gyokuyou asked, with Lishu nodding.

When they entered, Consort Lihua greeted and thanked them for visiting her son.

A few minutes later, Xiaolan returned inside after going out when Lishu noticed that her cheek was red. Huairen tried to explain but Zhengchao intervened and told truth. That Huairen slapped Xiaolan to shut her up when she tried to stop an argument. Lishu then threatened to remove Huairen from her position. As Lishu is about to leave, Shisui "accidentally" bumped into Huairen, then slipping in something on her sleeve.

When they returned, she revealed to Maomao that the thing that slipped in is a spider. Meanwhile at the Diamond Pavillion, the ladies, except Kanan, are panicking due to the spider running around, and they don't want to touch it, while Lishu is treating Xiaolan's cheek in her room.

Maomao and Shisui decided to visit the Verdigris House on one of their days off. There's quite a few changes that happened on the last time they were here. First, Chou - u, with his skills in painting, are now creating portraits of the courtesans and selling them for income, with the 10% of it being given to the madam. Second, a girl named Zulin has befriended the Chou - u, she is a mute girl who got ill after eating a drugged cake, and finally, the guard that helped Maomao on the taibon has renamed himself Sazen, and with his knowledge of medicine, Maomao made him her apprentice, and have him manage her father's old apothecary shop.

When they returned, they immediately went to the storage shed. Like what she did at the Jade Pavillion, Maomao turned the storage shed into her own personal workshop, the shed though is twice as big than the pavillion's, so she only used half of it. By afternoon, the two were called on by the Empress.

"Maomao, the Moon Prince asks you to accompany him at the Western Capital.", Gyokuyou said. Maomao stifled a groan.

"Oh, and Shisui you join them on the trip.", Gyokuyou added.

"Wait, why, Empress Gyokuyou? I don't have any business at the Western Capital?", Shisui is confused.

"Well, let's just say my father is very eager to meet you.", Gyokuyou answered.

The following day, they are now in a carriage with Basen, a disguised Jinshi, the quack. They first take a detour to help the quack's family, then continued on the journey.

Suddenly, the carriage driver notices a another carriage being attacked by bandits. Basen decided to advance and help defeat the bandits.

When the bandits were apprehended, they found out that the carriage was ridden by Ah Duo, Suirei, Lishu, and Xiaolan.

It is then revealed that a banquet will happen at the Western Capital in a few days, with the purpose of trying to get the Moon Prince a consort, with Lishu being one of the candidates.

After a few days, they have arrived at the Western Capital, where they were greeted by Gyokuen.

"Welcome to the Western Capital Moon Prince.", Gyokuen greeted them.

"It is a pleasure to meet you, Master Gyokuen.", Jinshi responded.

Gyokuen nodded, then looked at Maomao, "And you must be Kan Maomao, the caretaker of the Emperor's children, my daughter speaks very highly of you on the letters I received. Thank you, if it wasn't for you, my granddaughter Lingli, may not have survived."

Maomao bowed, "Please, there is no need to thank me, I only did what was right."

Gyokuen then looked at Shisui, "And you are Shisui, if I remember correctly. Gyokuyou keeps talking about you on her letters about how you saved the nation from your family's rebellion."

Shisui bowed, "It is with my gratitude, Master Gyokuen."

The group then settled in. By the time before noon, Shisui decided to go to the market, where it is full of people buying stuff. When she saw a bunch of dried insects, Shisui immediately bought them.

When she returned to the room she and Maomao shared. Maomao to tell her Lishu's situation, and Shisui ws shocked. Lishu is asking Maomao if she could prove that she is the daughter of her father Uryuu. This made Shisui think that Lishu's problems with her own family are far worse than hers.

The next day, Shisui saw maomao step the toes of a man with glasses.

"Hey Maomao, who is this?", Shisui asked.

"A pleasure meeting you, Lady Shisui. my name is Kan Lahan, Maomao's brother.", he greeted her.

"You are not my brother, Tousle - glasses, what brings you here anyway?", Maomao asked.

"I am here to tell you that you are attending the banquet not as a taster, but as the princess of the La Clan", Lahan answered, which made Maomao groan in displeasure.

The next day, hours before the banquet starts, Shisui is now prepared for the banquet, wearing dress typically worn by noble ladies at the Western Capital, she reminisced the time she dresses up every the Emperor arrives for their talks. When she saw Maomao though, she was star - strucked. Her dress is very beautiful, and this is the first time she saw her without her freckles.

"You look beautiful tonight, Maomao.", Shisui complimented her, which caused Maomao to smile genuinely as they are about to go to the banquet.

Chapter Text

Maomao and Shisui has finally arrived at the Banquet.

Upon entering, they were greeted by Gyokuen.

"A pleasant evening to you, princess of the La Clan.", Gyokuen greeted her, which caused Maomao to grimace.

The banquet has then begun. While they are both chatting with Lahan, they come across Lishu and Xiaolan.

"Oh, hey Maomao, you look beautiful tonight. Are you here as the Moon Prince's taster?", Xiaolan greeted and asked.

"No, little lady, she is attending tonight as the Princess of the La Clan.", Lahan answered, followed by Maomao stepping his foot.

"Oh right, I often forgot you are the daughter of the La Clan Head. Speaking of which though, where is the Grand Commandant?", Xiaolan wondered.

"He is unfortunately unavailable due to some work.", Lahan answered, much to Maomao's relief since she can't see the old fart.

Meanwhile, Shisui is monitoring the area for possible people that will attempt to poison them.

And then, something that is covered by cloth was presented in a middle.

As the cover was removed, it is revealed to be a lion. Luckily, there is someone bringing meat to prevent the lion from being too aggressive.

That is, until the lion smelled something that causes it to aggravate and started shaking the cage until a couple of the bars were broken.

After that, the lion tracked the smell, which happens to be from a certain consort hiding behind her lady - in - waiting.

Shisui also noticed this and tried to run towards them to shield them, but the lion was to fast and is already about to pounce on the young consort as Xiaolan tries to shield her.Fortunately though, someone managed to stop and defeat the lion, Basen. As he asks if they were okay, he flushed as seeing Lishu, with Lishu blushing back.

Shisui and Maomao, who was tending to the others when the lion got aggravated managed to arrive. They asked if they were okay, to which Xiaolan nodded.

A few hours later, Maomao returned to her room, with Shisui already waiting there. There, Maomao told her that she would be visiting her relatives, as much as she hates doing it, so that means she would be able to come back way earlier.

As they returned, they split on the way like Maomao said. So Shisui returned at the Empress' Residence first. She explained this to Gyokuyou who just nodded in response.

The Emperor then visited the residence. After Shisui tasted the food in case of poison, he decided to ask her something.

"So, Shisui, how is your experience at the Western Capital?", he asked her.

"Well, it was a nice experience overall, Empress Gyoluyou's father is also kind during our visit.", Shisui gave a simple answer, with the Emperor nodding in approval.

After a week, Maomao returned to the capital. An hour after arriving, Xiaolan visited asking for Maomao's presence.

When she returned, Shisui noticed the silent fury on Maomao's eyes.

"Maomao, is something wrong happen?", Shisui asked.

Maomao explained what happened to Lishu.

"Oh, for goodness sake. Those ladies were the worst.", Shisui responded.

"Indeed, we were trying our best to prove Lady Lishu is innocent.", Maomao replied.

Eventually, they manage to find the evidence to prove Lishu's innocence, however, it is in vain as they Lishu at the top of the tower, looking like she is about to jump.

Maomao managed to get up there, but due to a shriek that Shisui only heard, Lishu fell off the railing.

Fortunately though, Basen managed to catch her before she lands on the ground, and thus she survived. This is when Shisui noticed Xiaolan walking away slowly with a very depressed - looking attitude.

A few days later, Lishu leaves the Rear Palace because the event became a scandal and lowered Lishu's reputation. Her ladies now in front of the Emperor, and surprisingly, Maomao and Shisui near him. The ladies weirdly are smiling, except for Kanan, who is looking down, possibly due to the guilt she is carrying for protecting Lishu enough.

"Kanan.", the Emperor stated, which caused Kanan to look up.

"Due to your unwavering loyalty towards Lishu, we have decided, per her request, to arrange your marriage to a good man, you've earn it.", the Emperor said, which shocked all the ladies.

"Thank you, your Majesty.", Kanan bowed, with tear on her eye. And then, she was dismissed, while the the ladies were still standing in front of him.

"So, your Majesty, are you gonna reassign us to more "proper" consorts?", Huairen asked all of a sudden with a smug look on her face. This caused Maomao's eye to twitch, the nerve of her to say that to the Emperor after what she has done to his consort, that she actually even treats like his own daughter more than her own father. Instead, due to her action towards her consort, they dishonorably discharged to the outer court, their reputations lowered, thus lowering their marriage prospects. This caused all the ladies to tremble, to think all they done would return to them, they were dismissed and banished from the Rear Palace.

After that, Maomao and Shisui have finally retired for the night, hoping Xiaolan is doing okay with Lishu.

It is morning, a few weeks after Lishu and Xiaolan left the Rear Palace when Gyokuyou called Maomao to the seating room.

"Maomao, the Emperor has finally allowed women to become medical assistants in the Palace.", Gyokuyou told her.

This made Maomao get interested, that is until Gyokuyou told her. "However, only court ladies are allowed, so you have to retake the exam."

Maomao grimaced upon hearing this. "But I don't to study anything outside medicine.", she murmured.

"That's why, we are helping you study.", Shisui responded, holding a load of study materials.

For weeks, Shisui, Haku - u, and Hongniang are helping Maomao with studying for the exam.

And at last, the day of the exam has arrived. And as they expected, she got the highest score.

The day after that, Maomao has now left for her first day as a medical assistant, little did she know, Gyokuyou ordered Shisui to follow and check on her, and Shisui knew that she could her maid uniform to hide well and gain any attention. Gyokuyou was amazed by how Shisui loves to changes outfits.

While monitering her friend, she saw her treating an unconcious man, the other ladies did not move though because they are following her because they think she is inferior. Only to realize that it was a test and two of the ladies were ordered to leave for their lack of respect. For the entire day, Maomao was sanitizing bandages and making medicine, and as she was about to leave, Shisui returns to the Empress' Residence and reported her findings. Gyokuyou was amused, it seems that she has already left an impression.

A week later, the physician Luomen, Maomao, and the other remaining medical assistants, Yao and En'en, are visiting all the concubines for their checkup. One of them is Aylin, an envoy from Shaoh who entered the Rear Palace for asylum with the help of Lahan.

Yao, one of her colleagues is starting to get suspicious of her connections when they visited the Crystal Pavillion. When they were greeted, the head lady - in - waiting, Shuhui, shivered at her presence. While Luomen was checking Lihua's pulse, she let Maomao hold her child, Nanchuan.

Her suspiscions grew even further when they visited the Empress. Upon entering, they noticed it is more set up like a tea party, not to mention Princess Lingli running towards Maomao to hug her.

When her shift ended, Maomao returned to Gyokuyou's Residence, not realizing that Yao and En'en are following her.

They were peeking at her for a few minutes, but it was cut short when she was found by a certain insect - loving lady - in - waiting.

They were then presented to Gyokuyou, with Maomao's palm in her face.

"Hello, ladies. May I ask you why you were outside my residence looking you are on me?", Gyokuyou asked politely.

"Forgive me, Empress Gyokuyou. It's just that one of our colleagues here has been hiding secrets from us.", Yao answered while glaring at Maomao.

"I wanted to tell you, but you are distancing yourself away from me just because I beat your score at the exam.", that is Maomao's reason.

Gyokuyou then decided to explain what Maomao is to her, which shocked Yao. How can someone like Maomao, a girl that treats herself as a commoner, have very strong connections to the Imperial Family.

After this commotion, they have decided to say goodbye to Maomao and left, with Maomao pondering if it was a good idea to tell them her connections.

It's been months ever since Maomao has became a medical assistant, a news from Gyokuyou's father has arrived. It is said that her niece, will arrive in a couple weeks. Her father, and Gyokuyou's half - brother, Gyoku - Ou planned to turn her into the Moon Prince's consort. Koku - u, one of Seki - u's older sisters, is angered by this, since Yaqin bears a striking resemblance to Gyokuyou herself, and the court could see this decision as disrespect to the Empress. Luckily though, the Moon Prince, along with Maomao, most of the physician's, her family members, and the Ma Clan have planned to go to the Western Capital in order to help with the locust plague, so that means Yaqin and Jinshi will not interact until he arrives after a couple months.

When the day arrived for the Moon Prince to leave. Shisui decided to accompany to bid farewell to Maomao

"Be careful out there, Maomao. Don't get yourself into trouble.", Shisui said.

"Of course, Shisui.", Maomao responded. Shisui then talked to Chue.

"Miss Chue, send letters to me through a bird. That way, the Empress could know what is happening on her homeland.", Shisui ordered her fellow Mi Clan member.

"Sure, Miss Shisui.", Chue just winked at her then proceeded to bounce to the boat.

Upon returning, the other ladies are now preparing for Yaqin's arrival, when she secretly called by Gyokuyou.

"Shisui, when Yaqin arrives, keep an eye on her.", Gyokuyou told her, to which Shisui nodded. Even she has no idea what are the motives of the Empress' niece.

After a few weeks, Yaqin has taken her first steps at the capital, she was very nervous, which was noticed by Gyokuyou when her niece has entered her residence.

"Hello there, Yaqin, if I remember correctly, this is first time we have ever interacted.", Gyokuyou greeted her niece politely.

"Y- yes, my dear Empress.", Yaqin stuttered.

"No need to be formal, my dear niece. You can just call me Auntie when not in a formal setting.", Gyokuyou told her.

"Al- Alright then, Au- Auntie.", Yaqin responded.

Yaqin then went to her room, not knowing that Shisui is actually following her. Shisui stopped at the door to not raise suspiscion. This is when she smelled something very fragrant and spicy. When she reported it to the Empress, she was also intrigued, this is when Koku - u got furious.

"I knew it, she brought aphrodisiacs!", Koku - u shouted.

"Don't shout Koku - u, we don't want to get her attention.", Shisui told her, so Koku - u calmed down.

"Besides, the smell is rather spicy, I don't remember an aphrodisiac with that scent I smelled.", she added.

And so, the next day, while Yaqin was out, Shisui decided to look at her room.

She tracked the scent she found yesterday and found a box.

She then presented it to Gyokuyou when Koku - u got furious again.

"I knew she brought aphrodisiacs!", Koku - u screamed, this time though, Yaqin heard her as she already returned.

"What's going on?", Yaqin asked everybody.

"Tell us why you brought aphrodisiacs here!", Koku - u shouted at her while pointing at the box.

Upon seeing it, Yaqin's eyes widened, they have found her secret stash.

'I guess the jig is up.', Yaqin sighed at the thought.

Yaqin decided to open that box, revealing six jars filled with powders and other stuff.

"What are those?", Haku - u asked in confusion.

"Peppercorns, Paprika, Cinnamon, Cumin, Cardamom, and Star Anise", Yaqin enumerated what is on those jars.

"Wait, those are spices traditionally used to enhance flavor on food.", Shisui said.

"Why do you have this, Yaqin?", Gyokuyou asked.

Yaqin sighed and explained. "When I was still a kid, my interest in cooking started to show up. When not training to become a proper lady, I will immediately go to the kitchen to ask the cook how our food was made. Of course I didn't tell my father about it or else he would be mad, but grandfather  let me keep the secret if I gave him some of my dishes cooked. But a few months ago, I was about to tell my father when she told me that I will become the Moon Prince's consort. I got mad because I was not even informed about it, and I don't even want to be a consort. Because 1. I want to marry someone I choose. 2. I don't want to leave my home and family behind. and 3. That is total disrespect to you and the Imperial Family."

All the ladies were shocked at her explanation, especially Koku - u. 

"I see, I am glad I would be able to trust you, Yaqin.", Gyokuyou said to her.

"Thank you, Auntie.", Yaqin bowed and returned to her room with the container.

The next day, Shisui looked for Yaqin. Only to discover that she turned the other half of the storage shed to her own makeshift kitchen. Just then, a bird landed on her shoulder. Upon seeing the paper tied to its foot, she knew Chue delivered a letter. She decided to show it to Gyokuyou who ordered her to read it and tell what's written in simplified manner.

"Well, let's see... Wait, Master Basen, the youngest of the Ma, has brought Lady Lishu and Xiaolan to the Western Capital, along with a duck. And Miss Chue, Maomao, one of her relatives, and Master Basen, along with the duck went to the farming village."

A week later, another letter is sent, this one though caused Shisui to panic. "The locusts finally past by. And Maomao got unconscious because of a huge block of hail?!"

Shisui just hoped that they would be able to return safe and sound.

It's morning at the Empress' Residence, Haku - u went to the seating room to tell the Empress news.

"My Empress, I got news from the Western Capital.", Haku - u told Gyokuyou.

"What would that be, Haku - u?", Gyokuyou asked.

"Your half brother, Gyoku - Ou is dead.", Haku - u answered.

Silence filled the room after that.

"I see.", Gyokuyou said, with a little tone of grieving.

"What's the fuss about?", Shisui asked.

Haku - u then explained her and her sister's past.

"I see, who killed him though?", Shisui asked again.

"My cousin. Although nowadays, he goes by the name, Rikuson.", Haku - u answered.

"Oh, him.", Shisui snickered.

"What are you snickering about? Do you know him.", Koku - u glared at her.

'Yes, I know him, he is the former aide of the Grand Commandant.", Shisui answered.

"Still doesn't answer why you were snickering.", Koku - u is still glaring.

"Well, let's just say everytime I see or hear about him, he is doing something that would make the Moon Prince jealous.", Shisui answered.

"What do you mean?", Gyokuyou is now curious.

"The first one is in the banquet where attended as the princess of the La Clan. Rikuson asked her to dance and kissed her hand. And guess who was watching?", Shisui explained.

Gyokuyou tried to hide her laughter.

"As for the other, it was said at Miss Chue's letter one time that after the locust attack, he joking asked for Maomao's hand - in - marriage. And well, Miss Chue told the Moon Prince about it and he is not happy.", Shisui continued, as Gyokuyou finally broke down in laughter and Hongniang sighed.

Meanwhile, Yaqin, who was silent the entire time, finally spoke.

"Aunty, can you cancel all my meetings with the Moon Prince?", Yaqin asked.

Gyokuyou was shocked. "Are you sure, Yaqin?", Gyokuyou asked back, she knew Yaqin is not interested on the Moon Prince.

Yaqin only nodded.

"Very well.", Gyokuyou said.

A few days later, Chue sent another letter to Shisui, this time she is worried upon reading it. Which Gyokuyou noticed.

"What's the problem, Shisui?", Gyokuyou asked.

"Maomao's curiosity got the best of her yet again. It seems that she, Miss Chue, Master Shikyou, Gyokujun, and Xiaohong are in journey outside the Western Capital.", Shisui explained.

"Oh, relax Shisui. You know Maomao, she can protect herself.", Gyokuyou tried to reassure her.

"It's not her that I am worried about. It's Xiaolan, if she just found what happened, she might panic.", Shisui said.

"I'm pretty sure Lady Lishu is trying her best to her down, besides, I am pretty sure Xiaolan has matured ever since the last time you see each other.", Gyokuyou said, which allowed Shisui to breath calmly now.

The next day, Shisui is returning to the residence when she smelled something fragrant. She followed the source, only to find Yaqin brewing her own tea. She then presented it to her aunt, who is amazed by the taste of it.

A week later, Chue has sent yet another letter. This time though, she is relieved.

"They've finally returned, although one of Miss Chue's arms no longer functions, and Master Shikyou is now leading the Western Capital. They will also be returning in a week.", Shisui read the letter.

"Very well, it seems that Maomao and Yaqin are finally meeting.", Gyokuyou thought.

"Yeah, the two people that occupied the storage shed.", Shisui said, which caused both of them to laugh.

Another week passed by, and the crew that accompanied the Moon Prince at the Western Capital has finally returned. Maomao, after getting all her belongings, went to the Empress' Residence.

"Welcome back, Maomao.", Gyokuyou greeted her.

"It's a pleasure to be back, my Empress. Now if you'll excuse me, I have a lesson to attend at the medical office. Dr. Liu is eager to bring us back to work.", Maomao said.

As Maomao left, a messenger arrived with news from the Emperor that caught the Empress off - guard.

"Lady Lishu and Xiaolan are staying here?", Gyokuyou asked, surprised.

"Yes, my lady. Only until afternoon, as they will be staying at the Ma Clan Residence.", the messenger replied and Gyokuyou nodded.

When they arrived, Shisui and the other ladies were shocked at Lishu's new appearance. Now she is taller than Yinghua and wears an outfit that is more fit for a servant rather than a high consort. Shisui noticed Koku - u glaring at her until Seki - u stopped her. 

By lunchtime, Shisui, Seki - u, Lishu, and Xiaolan were now talking. After a while Yaqin decided to join them, where she fully explained to Lishu and Xiaolan why she is so interested in cooking. After that, they decided to visit Maomao at the medical office.

"It's surprising how they quickly became friends.", Shisui thought while Seki - u just giggled.

When Yaqin return, Shisui panicked as she returned alone.

"Don't worry Shisui, Master Gaoshun just took them earlier and they are now on their way to the Ma Clan Residence.", Yaqin reassured her which helped calm Shisui down.

Two weeks later, Shisui is wondering why Yaqin is returning back with a sack of sweet potatoes. So she asked when they are at the seating room.

"Yaqin, who gave you that sack of sweet potatoes that you brought back here?", Shisui asked.

"His name is Kan Junjie.", Yaqin answered.

"Oh, him. He is my cousin. Although I call him 'Lahan's Brother' because I find it difficult to remember the name of someone I am not interested. This actually resulted to us accidentally leaving him at the Western Capital when we returned.", Maomao said.

'I really want to meet him again someday.', Yaqin thought while blushing, and Shisui noticed this.

Chapter Text

A few weeks later, while the Emperor and Jinshi has visited the Empress' Residence, his Majesty and Jinshi did not fail to notice the smile on Gaoshun's face.

"You look like you're gonna tell good news today, Gaoshun.", Jinshi said.

"Because I do have some goods news, Moon Prince.", Gaoshun replied, just in time for Shisui, Maomao, and Lingli to arrive.

"Well, what's the news, Master Gaoshun?", Maomao asked.

"Basen has finally proposed to Lishu.", Gaoshun answered as everyone on the room gasped and Gyokuyou covered her mouth.

They finally did it. They are finally getting married.

"That is wonderful. It seems like Lishu has finally found someone she truly loves.", the Emperor said.

"Congratulations Gaoshun, you finally have a new member for your clan.", Gyokuyou said to the Emperor's aide.

"Thank you, Empress.", Gaoshun replied.

This is when Maomao realized something and snickered.

"What's so funny, Maomao?", Shisui asked her.

"Well, I just find it funny that the Moon Prince's most trusted guard got married first before him.

Jinshi was shocked and then glanced to his side pouting when the Emperor and Gyokuyou laughed.

"Why must you embarass me?", jinshi said.

The Emperor then asked, "Gaoshun, when will the wedding be?"

Gaoshun answered, "The day after the Mid - Autumn festival."

"That's three months from now.", Maomao said.

"Well then, let's prepare.", Jinshi followed.

A few weeks later, Shisui overhears a conversation between Gyokuyou and Yaqin.

"Can I work as Lishu's poison taster?", Yaqin asked.

Silence fell after that. And Gyokuyou refused her offer because she does not want any of her family members risk their lives.

After a week, the Empress invited Lishu, Basen, and Xiaolan for lunch at the residence to congratulate the newly betrothed.

After lunch though, Lishu fainted and was sent to the medical office.

Maomao then returned after treating Lishu and explained the situation.

"Lady Lishu has been poisoned.", Maomao said which caused everyone in the room to panic.

"Wait, if the dish was poisoned, shouldn't I have been poisoned as well?", Gyokuyou asked.

"That is because the aim is to target Lishu's allergic reaction to fish.", Maomao explained which is new information to everyone in the room.

"Wait, the food we ate does not contain any fish.", Basen said.

Yaqin then stood up, "I might be able to help with that. Seki - u, can you bring in a sample of the food ate earlier?"

"Of course, my lady.", Seki - u responded.

"How are you be able to help, Lady Yaqin?", Maomao asked.

Yaqin explained, "Due to my interest in cooking, I've learned to distinguish different flavors in a dish, allowing me to learn of the ingredients used so that I would be able to replicate it."

This impressed Maomao, thinking this would be a great skillset for a poison taster to have.

Seki - u then handed a sample of the dish to Yaqin and she tasted it. Upon swallowing she discovered the reason why Lishu's allergic reaction showed up.

"I found the reason.", Yaqin said.

"What would that be, Yaqin?", Xiaolan asked, dropping the formalities since they are friends and Yaqin told her to drop it.

"One of the ingredients used is fish sauce, it is once a popular condiment to flavor dishes until soy sauce was introduced. However, I find it weird that is was used since the soy sauce could give the same if not better flavor.", Yaqin explained.

"Maomao, follow me, we are asking questions to the ones that cooked this dish.", Yaqin told Maomao as they both went to the area where food for the Empress were cooked and asked the cooks.

When they returned, they told everyone what they found.

Yaqin said, "The cooks said a lady holding a fan covering their mouth said to use fish sauce since it is traditional."

Maomao then looked at Xiaolan, noticing her fists clenching and her darkened expression. This concerned everyone as they never saw her mad before, especially since she is normally happy.

"Xiaolan, do you know who did this?", Maomao asked.

"Yakou.", Xiaolan answered with an angry tone.

Maomao immediately furrowed her eyebrows upon hearing this.

"Who's Yakou?", Yaqin asked.

"Lishu's half - sister.", Maomao answered.

"Hmm, as much as we want to arrest her, she must out of the palace by now.", the Empress said as Basen sighed, worried for his upcoming wife.

"So, Auntie, will you finally accept my offer of becoming Lishu's poison taster?", Yaqin asked her offer again.

Gyokuyou sighed, "Fine, but we have to wait for my father's approval of this."

Yaqin nodded when Maomao said to her, "In the meantime, I will be teaching you how to detect poisons with no odor or taste."

After a few hours, Lishu has recovered and the three guests left to prepare for the wedding.

Alas, the wedding day has arrived. However, a couple hours after the wedding, Maomao returned with a dark expression.

"Maomao, is something wrong?", Gyokuyou asked.

Maomao nodded and answered, "Yet another attempt on Lady Lishu's life."

Gyokuyou was shocked, "What?"

Maomao answered, "This time though, they decided a feifa would ensure it."

"Did she survive?", Gyokuyou asked.

"Lishu survived,", Maomao's expression darkened, "because Xiaolan took the bullet for her."

Upon hearing this, Shisui, Seki - u, and Yaqin trembled.

"Wh- What?!", Seki - u was shocked.

Maomao nodded, "We managed to removed the bullet. She is currently recovering at the medical office."

This is when they noticed that Yaqin is already running towards the medical office.

"Also, Shisui, they found the weapon used.", Maomao said.

Upon seeing it, Shisui was shocked.

'Is that - ", Shisui is about to say something, but Maomao continued what she is about to say, "Indeed, the feifa model that is mass - produced by your clan for their attempted rebellion."

"But how?? All the the feifa were confiscated and destroyed.", Shisui wondered.

"Unless, some are smuggled and sold illegally.", Maomao thought.

"Alright, I will investigate the root of this.", Shisui said with determination.

For the next few days, Shisui, Chue, and Lishu's half - brother, Jun investigated the matter.

This is when they were greeted by guards who captured two hooded figures that were about to kill Xiaolan if it weren't for Lishu and Yaqin.

When they removed the the hoods, it was revealed to be Uryuu and Yakou, Lishu's father and half - sister. When Lishu found out about this, she was furious and demanded why they did this, but the two remained silent, thinking they would be spared if they don't speak. But Yaqin managed to deduce their motive, kill Xiaolan to make Lishu fall into depression, and eventually, commit suicide. The two were then executed after that for attempted murder.

A few days later, Xiaolan has fully recovered, the two, along with Yaqin are now preparing to return to the Ma Clan Residence.

"Bye, Xiaolan! Stay safe.", Shisui and Maomao waved goodbye.

"Bye Maomao!! Bye Shisui!!", Xiaolan waved back as the carriage leaves with the newest member of the Ma Clan.

It's morning at the Empress' Residence. Shisui and the others are currently cleaning the area, while Maomao is already working at the medical office. Just then, a messenger arrived to give Gyokuyou some news.

"Good morning, Empress Gyokuyou," the messenger said, bowing.

"Good morning to you too. So what is the news that you are giving to me?" Gyokuyou asked.

"I am here to inform you that Lady Lishu is on her way to visit," the messenger answered.

"Very well," Gyokuyou responded, and the messenger left.

"Huh, it appears that we just cleaned the area just in time," Shisui said.

"That appears to be the case. Hongniang, prepare some refreshments for the visitors," Gyokuyou ordered, and Hongniang immediately goes to work.

A few hours later, they heard a knock on the door, and Haku - u went to open it. On the other side was the newest member of the Ma Clan, Lishu, along with her aides, Xiaolan and Yaqin. They went to the seating room where Gyokuyou is already seated.

"Welcome, Lady Lishu. It's been a while," Gyokuyou greeted her.

"It has indeed, my dear Empress," Lishu replied.

"What brings you here?" Gyokuyou asked.

"Well, the Moon Prince told us that in a few weeks, a clan gathering will happen. It will be the first event where I will be attending as a Ma Clan member. However, while walking here, I remembered that Yaqin was a member of the newly formed You Clan, which, as far as I remember, is the clan your family hails from, so to prepare for the event, it will be wise for Yaqin to stay here until the gathering."

"Very well, Lady Lishu," Gyokuyou accepted.

"Now, if you'll excuse me, we have to leave now, Xiaolan keeps insisting me to visit Maomao right after." Lishu and Xiaolan bowed and left.

When Yaqin looked back at her aunt, she couldn't help but notice her aunt's curious gaze.

"So, how were you?" Gyokuyou asked her niece.

"I am well, Auntie. Madam Taomei was grateful that I helped her with housework. And Master Gaoshun treats both me and Xiaolan like his daughters. As for Lishu's siblings-in-law, they are quite a mixed bag. Lady Maamei is very authoritative, Master Baryou is very shy and timid and often hides in a curtain, and Miss Chue is literally the embodiment of joy and excitement," Yaqin answered.

"I see. Anything else?" Gyokuyou added another question.

"Well, let's just say that Xiaolan and I heard rather... interesting noises in their bedroom last night," Yaqin blushed.

Both Shisui and Gyokuyou took less than a second to realize what Yaqin was implying and laughed, much to Hongniang's embarrassment.

"It seems that Lishu has finally used the techniques Maomao taught her when she was still a consort," Gyokuyou said after recovering from laughing.

"What do you mean, Auntie?" Yaqin was curious.

Gyokuyou grinned as she explained what Maomao did when Shisui, or rather, Loulan, arrived that time.

Yaqin was blushing and completely silent. "I have no words."

Gyokuyou giggled. "Oh, don't get mad at Maomao. It was very beneficial. Because of that lesson, both Lady Lihua and I got pregnant months later. And we gave birth to Dongyun and Nanchuan."

"Still, I am shocked. Especially since that was both Lishu's and Master Basen's first time," Yaqin said.

"Wait, Master Basen was a virgin until her wedding night?" Shisui asked, and Yaqin nodded in response.

"He actually feels insecure around women, except for Maomao," Yaqin said.

"Wait, why not Maomao?" Shisui asked.

"Well, to put it simply. Maomao is simply not womanly enough. That's what he said," Yaqin answered.

A few weeks later, the day of the Clan Gathering has arrived. Yaqin is wearing an outfit that is primarily coral-colored, while Shisui, who was ordered by Gyokuyou to be Yaqin's aide, is wearing mainly a garnet-colored outfit, reminiscent of the colors of her consort attire. Gyokuyou told the two that they can go first, as she is waiting for the other members of the Imperial Family.

They were now riding in a carriage along with Yaqin's grandfather and newly appointed Prime Minister, Master Gyokuen.

When they arrived, they sat at the You Clan table. They then surveyed the other tables and found the other attending clans. First is the La Clan, which was only composed of the youngest generation, Maomao, Lahan, and Lahan's Brother, Kan Junjie, with Yaqin staring at the latter. Following that is the Shin, where one of the members, a man about the age of an average soldier, is seen staring at the table of the Lu Clan, where Maomao's colleagues, Yao and En'en, are currently sitting. And currently, the last one that they saw is the U Clan, Lishu's birth clan, consisting of Master U and Jun, Chue's new Mi Clan apprentice. This is when Shisui had a thought. "Wait, why is Lady Lishu not at the U Clan table?"

Yaqin answered her question. "Well, you see, when a woman gets married, she becomes a member of the husband's clan, which means Lishu is now a member of the Ma Clan."

And as if they were called, the Ma Clan arrived. They consist of Gaoshun, Taomei, Maamei, Bakin, Baryou, Chue, Basen, Lishu, Xiaolan, and two animals that are practically the family's pets, a duck named Jofu and an owl named Kulumu. After a few minutes, the Imperial Family, or the Ka Clan arrived.

While having dinner, Shisui noticed that Yaqin does not stop staring at a certain man sitting at the La Clan table, so Shisui urged her to talk to him, and so she did. While Yaqin was talking to Lahan's Brother though, she saw that Lishu and Xiaolan had noticed them as well and were now whispering to each other about them.

However, a commotion happened that led to the duel of Lahan's Brother and the boy from the Shin Clan, where Lahan's Brother proved victorious. Yaqin sighed in relief and blushed in excitement. Shisui noticed Lishu and Xiaolan giving each other a look, and Shisui knew that they were going to tease Yaqin about those events when she returned.

After the gathering, Gyokuen and Shisui dropped off Yaqin at the Ma Clan Residence. And then Gyokuen dropped off Shisui at the Empress' Residence, where Gyokuyou arrived a few minutes earlier.

When Shisu went to the sitting room, though, Gyokuyou asked her something.

"So Shisui, why was Yaqin blushing really red earlier?" Gyokuyou asked with curiosity.

Shisui decided to explain Yaqin's situation.

"Oh, Yaqin has a crush on someone?" Gyokuyou asked with a gasp. And Shisui nodded.

"And where is she now?" Gyokuyou asked again.

"Master Gyokuen and I dropped her off at the Ma Clan Residence, where Lady Lishu and Xiaolan are probably already teasing her about her... love life," Shisui answered.

"Oh, I am so going to talk to her about that when she visits again," Gyokuyou giggled. While Hongniang just sighed at what is going to happen next.
