One Day I'll Walk With You

Summary:

In a world underwater, Wei Wuxian has never known anything but living in Lotus Cove with the Jiangs. They were his clan, his family, no matter how dysfunctional.

Enter Lan Wangji, the Second Serpent of the Lan Clan, who makes Wei Wuxian's heart flutter in ways he didn't know possible.

Through mischievous antics, bogus competitions, trials and tribulations, war and tragedy, the two can never seem to catch a break from the other.

Even death cannot put a permanent barrier between them, it seems.

Or, an MDZS merpeople AU. Aside from the mermaid traits, most of this story follows canon with a little extra sprinkled in, such as graphic gore and violence, original characters and backstories (including ones for existing characters), and a whole bunch of lore (and wherein the title may be a spoiler but oh well).

CURRENTLY BEING REWORKED! (2/18/26)

Notes:

The backstory:

This all started one day back in January because I asked some newfound friends in a discord chat for some ideas for a oneshot to write because I was bored. People started throwing out ideas (we started with cannibalism, funnily enough, because why not I guess) and then we somehow landed on Wangxian mermaids, and everyone started putting ideas in the chat until I made a google doc and we went from there. Before we knew it, there were almost 100k words in the span of just 10 days, and still it went on despite the fact that we didn't think we were ever gonna post this and that we were just writing this for crack purposes.

We truly have Yani to thank for this because she was the main author that spat out words as fast as Spencer Reid would read them, as well as A-Lain, our co-author and the one that supplied Yani with ideas. There's also Grace, who said and I quote, "I'm here for moral support and fucked up ideas." She gave us our title and therefore our endgame for this fic, and she (plus Yani) were never afraid to say, "Put some gore in it, it'll be fantastic." So. And finally, there's me, Slxyer or Brook (or Grandthey as I've been nicknamed), the editor/poster of this fic because finding mistakes is what my brain is best for, and out of the four of us, I'm the one with an Ao3 account that also happens to know how it works.

Warnings:

Throughout this story, there will be many instances of violence and gore described fairly vividly, and as much as I can give warnings, sometimes it's an entire chapter that has gore in it, and sometimes the violence is mentioned offhandedly in chapters that don't have graphic depictions of it. As I said above, we started off with cannibalism as an idea (which I’m still laughing about to this day) and therefore gore is a given, even though there is very minimal cannibalism in this. If you don't enjoy violence and gore, it's not recommended that you read this, but even so, I'll put warnings in the notes in chapters that have them, or perhaps even small and vague summaries of the events so nobody is left out. Even so, if you enjoy gore and mermaids and the lore behind the latter, then this fic is certainly for you.

Notes:

There are over 100k words in this fic and at the time of posting this first chapter, there are 62 completed chapters. This is still ongoing and so the chapter count won't be definitive just yet, as we wanted to start posting sooner rather than later because we were excited to share it. Also, there isn't really a posting schedule and there might never be, I'll just be posting whenever it's convenient for me, which should be a couple times a week, but still. If we eventually get somewhere near 60 chapters posted in the coming weeks/months and posting seems to slow down, just know that we as a group are working on multiple fics at once to post later on.

Finally, any TGCF characters mentioned are really just mentioned; our author squeezed in some lore about them despite this being an MDZS-centric fic.

Anyway, happy reading!

Chapter 1: The Depths Stir

Chapter Text

The coral forest stretched out in every direction, a mesmerizing cathedral of vibrant colors. Fans of lavender and crimson swayed lazily in the current, their edges rippling like silk. Pale golden light filtered down from above, casting dappled patterns over the seabed, where anemones clung to jagged rocks and schools of silvery fish darted between coral spires. It was a place of stillness, of ancient peace—until the water stirred.

A faint ripple grew into a roiling swirl as a cloud of deep violet swept through the serene depths, breaking the quiet rhythm of the sea. The Jiang Clan’s pod moved as one, their movements fluid, disciplined. Their colors stood out boldly against the pale blues of the deep—the purple fins of their leaders shimmering like royal banners, while smaller flashes of indigo and gold wove between them, messengers darting ahead to announce their arrival.

But one streak of red flitted in and out of formation, an unmistakable burst of chaos amid the ordered pod. Wei Wuxian spun loops around the others, his long, sleek tail tipped in crimson. He twisted and somersaulted through the water with an energy that seemed boundless, the light catching on the silver scales scattered across his body like stars in the night sky.

“Will you stop for one second, Wei Wuxian?” Jiang Cheng’s exasperated voice echoed through the water. His fins bristled as he tried—and failed—to snatch at Wei Wuxian’s tail. “You’re going to embarrass the entire pod before we even get there!”

Wei Wuxian grinned, effortlessly dodging his brother’s grasp. “Embarrass us? Me? Come on, Jiang Cheng, when have I ever not been the picture of propriety?” He spun in a lazy circle, his arms spread wide, his red-tipped tail flicking with theatrical flair.

Jiang Cheng snorted, clearly unimpressed. “You left Lotus Cove’s gate open last week, and a school of puffers swam into the training grounds. Don’t think I’ve forgotten.”

“That was one time!” Wei Wuxian protested, though the laughter in his voice betrayed him. “And it wasn’t even my fault. Puffers are naturally curious, aren’t they?”

“Stop deflecting. You’re lucky I haven’t told A-Jie.”

At the mention of their elder sister, Wei Wuxian ducked closer to Jiang Cheng, grinning mischievously. “Oh, come on. You wouldn’t. I’ll behave, I swear! I’m just excited—the Foam Recesses, the legendary home of the Twin Serpents! Tell me you’re not at least a little curious.”

Jiang Cheng gave him a flat look. “I’m more concerned about keeping us out of trouble. The Lans aren’t exactly known for their warmth. Don’t antagonize them, Wei Wuxian. Especially not Lan Wangji.”

“Lan Wangji?” Wei Wuxian’s brows shot up, his grin widening. “The cold and unyielding Second Serpent of the Lan Clan? Come on, Jiang Cheng, you know me. I’m a people person.”

“You’re a menace,” Jiang Cheng muttered, though he didn’t swat Wei Wuxian away when the latter punched his shoulder playfully.

Their laughter swirled together, fading into the background as the pod moved on, the coral forest thinning as they swam toward deeper waters.

Haishi1 approached and cast an eerie stillness over the waters as the Jiang Clan arrived at the gates of the Foam Recesses. The pale blue glow of bioluminescent coral lined the archways, shimmering softly in the dim light. But the gates remained closed, their intricate carvings of coiling serpents silent and unyielding.

Wei Wuxian floated to the front of the group, his curious gaze darting between the carvings. “This is it? Where’s the grand welcome? The fanfare?”

Jiang Cheng swam up beside him, looking visibly annoyed. “This is the grand welcome, Wei Wuxian. Now, where’s the invitation?”

Wei Wuxian’s grin faltered. He patted himself down—his sash, his satchel, even the folds of his robe. Nothing.

“Don’t tell me–”

“Uh…” Wei Wuxian winced, offering Jiang Cheng a sheepish smile. “I may have… forgotten it?”

“You what?!”

“It’s not a big deal! We can just–”

“We can’t just barge in without an invitation, you idiot!” Jiang Cheng snapped, his fins flaring with frustration. “Great. Just great. Now what?”

Wei Wuxian shrugged, his grin already returning. “Guess we’re staying in Caiyi Town for the night. Look on the bright side, Jiang Cheng—it’ll be fun!”

Jiang Cheng glared at him, but before he could argue, Wei Wuxian had already darted off toward the distant lights of the town.

The waters around Caiyi Town were warmer, filled with the hum of life. Lanterns floated above the seabed, their soft glow casting golden halos over the marketplace. But Wei Wuxian barely paid attention to the bustle around him. He was too busy admiring the bottles of clear, shimmering liquid on display at one of the stalls.

“Emperor’s Smile,” he muttered to himself, grinning as he picked one up. “Don’t mind if I do.”

Before he could swim off with his prize, a firm hand gripped his wrist.

Wei Wuxian turned, only to freeze at the sight of the figure before him. Pale, almost ethereal scales shimmered faintly in the dim light, and a long, elegant tail coiled beneath him. His expression was cold, his golden eyes piercing even in the dark water.

Lan Wangji.

“You cannot take what is not yours,” Lan Wangji said, his voice as calm and unyielding as the tides.

Wei Wuxian grinned, his heart racing for reasons he couldn’t quite place. “And who are you to stop me?”

Lan Wangji’s gaze didn’t waver. “Lan Wangji of the Lan Clan.”

“Ah, so you’re the famous Second Serpent,” Wei Wuxian said, his grin widening. “I’ve heard rumors about you. They don’t do you justice.”

Lan Wangji didn’t respond, but his grip didn’t loosen either.

“What’s the harm in a little drink?” Wei Wuxian teased, tugging lightly against Lan Wangji’s hold. “I promise I’ll repay you—somehow.”

Before Lan Wangji could reply, a sudden shift in the current sent both of them tumbling backward. Wei Wuxian’s tail instinctively wrapped around Lan Wangji’s, the motion unthinking, desperate to anchor himself.

For a moment, the world slowed. Wei Wuxian could feel the warmth of Lan Wangji’s scales against his own, the steady rhythm of his breathing in the bubble of silence around them. His heart pounded, confusion and something else twisting in his chest.

Lan Wangji’s expression remained unreadable, but his hold on Wei Wuxian steadied him, firm yet gentle.

Wei Wuxian blinked, trying to find his voice. “Uh… Thanks?”

Lan Wangji’s gaze lingered for a moment longer before he released Wei Wuxian, turning away without another word.

As the current settled, Wei Wuxian floated there, his mind racing. For the first time in his life, he wasn’t sure what to say.

Lan Wangji, for the first time, hesitated to inform his shufu of the enigma he met that cold evening.

The coral sang in hues of gold,
A symphony of peace untold.
The sea was still, the light was dim,
Until the tides began to brim.

A streak of red, a chaos bright,
Danced through shadows, chased the light.
His laughter spun the currents wild,
A spirit free, the ocean’s child.

"Stay in line," the stern voice cried,
But rules and chains he cast aside.
A brother’s care, a tether fraught,
Yet freedom's call was all he sought.

Through Foam Recesses’ solemn gate,
Legends slept and silence ate.
Twin Jades whispered from the deep,
Secrets the waves had sworn to keep.

The invitation? Left behind,
A lapse of wit, a curious mind.
To Caiyi Town, their path was steered,
Where lantern lights and tales appeared.

Amid the glow, he claimed his prize,
But golden met rebellious eyes.
A serpent stood, his presence stark,
A quiet flame within the dark.

“Not yours to take,” the serpent said,
His voice a tide, his gaze widespread.
But red and gold collided there,
A spark ignited in the air.

A tumble, twist, the current’s play,
Two tails entwined in ocean’s sway.
A heartbeat shared, a breath held still,
A meeting carved by fate’s own will.

The serpent turned, his path withdrawn,
Yet in his wake, a thread was drawn.
A tethered line, unseen, unspoken,
A fragile bond, a promise broken.

Beneath the waves, the story weaves,
Through coral forests, tangled eaves.
For where the tides and tempests churn,
The heart's own song will always yearn.
