Viago still wasn’t certain what made him agree to take the child. Maybe it was the resolute fire in her eyes, despite watching her mother bleed out in front of her. Maybe it was the way she walked so quietly that it impressed even him. Maybe it was the way that she managed to keep up with him while they traveled the rooftops, and he saw the raw potential in her, waiting for someone to shape it into something sharp and deadly. Or maybe it was the remnants of his bleeding heart that his trainers had ridiculed him for before. The one he believe he had stamped out as a Fledgeling, but flared up painfully as the child silently handed him a bloodstained note.
