The first snow of the year arrived relatively late in Kolari, primarily due to environmental factors. Seb, however, had completely missed it, having already traveled to Mexico for the final races of his last season. When Kimi sent him a picture—a breathtaking view of pristine white snow blanketing a cozy log cabin, encircled by a serene forest of pine trees—it was late at night in Mexico City. Exhausted yet unable to find sleep, Seb was lying in bed, scrolling through his messages.
“You’re missing it,” Kimi's message read, accompanied by the enchanting photo.
Seb smiled to himself. The image was so characteristically Kimi: devoid of unnecessary words or filters, just the raw, simple beauty of a Lapland winter that stirred something deep inside him. “Looks perfect,” Seb replied, captivated by the image longer than he cared to admit. “Save me some snow.” Kimi’s response came almost instantly: “There’s plenty. You should’ve been here already.”
Though Seb chuckled, shaking his head, Kimi's words lingered in his thoughts. Beneath Kimi's typical brusqueness, there seemed to lie a quiet truth that Seb wasn’t yet ready to confront.
In the weeks that followed, a whirlwind of emotions swept over him. Between the final races, bittersweet farewell ceremonies, and an endless stream of interviews, Seb barely found a moment to think. But the echo of Kimi’s message hung on in his mind, a soft whisper that tugged at his heart, pulling him toward Lapland with a yearning he couldn't ignore.
By the time the season drew to a close, Seb knew he had to act on those feelings. Retirement loomed before him like an uncharted ocean—vast and uncertain—but one thing felt clear: he didn’t want to face it alone.
The flight to Finland seemed to stretch on forever. Seb wasn’t fond of flying at the best of times, but this trip was different. Every minute in the air weighed heavily on him, his thoughts racing with both anticipation and nostalgia as he gazed out the window at the endless sea of clouds.
When the plane finally landed in Kittilä, Seb stepped into the biting cold, feeling the chill hit him like an electric jolt. The sharp, invigorating air was a sweet reminder of why he loved this place so much. He scanned the small parking lot until he spotted a familiar black SUV. Even before the window rolled down, he felt his heart quicken. Kimi sat behind the wheel, as unbothered as ever, a dark hoodie pulled over his head and a beanie struggling against his tousled hair.
Kimi didn’t wave or get out of the car. Instead, he leaned out of the rolled-down window, lips curling into the faintest smile, his eyes sparkling with mischief. “Took you long enough,” Kimi teased, his voice cutting through the cold wind like a warm embrace. Seb grinned, hefting his bag over his shoulder as he approached the car. “Missed me?” he asked. “Not really,” Kimi shot back, but the way his gaze lingered on Seb for a moment longer betrayed the truth.
As they drove to the cabin, the air between them buzzed with a comfortable familiarity, punctuated by the occasional exchange of banter. The landscape outside was breathtaking—snow-covered forests stretched endlessly, trees standing majestically beneath their snowy crowns.
Upon arriving, Seb stepped out of the car, letting the magic of the moment wash over him. The cabin mirrored Kimi's photo perfectly: quaint, cozy, and nestled among its snowy surroundings like a secret sanctuary. A thin plume of smoke gracefully spiraled from the chimney into the crisp, pale sky.
“It’s unfair how perfect this place is,” Seb breathed, his breath visible in the frosty air. Kimi rolled his eyes, a smirk playing on his lips as he grabbed Seb’s bag. “You say that every time.” “Because it’s true,” Seb shot back, following Kimi up the path to the door.
Inside, the cabin welcomed him with warmth and an enchanting aroma of wood smoke mingling with hints of something spicy. Seb shrugged off his coat and scarf, feeling the heat envelop him like a lover’s embrace. He glanced around, satisfying his longing for familiarity; every detail was just as he remembered it, down to the carefully stacked firewood by the hearth.
“You haven’t changed a thing,” Seb noted, amusement dancing in his voice. “Why would I?” Kimi replied, setting Seb’s bag down by the door, his eyes sparkling with a blend of mischief and affection. Seb smiled, shaking his head fondly. “Never change, Kimi.”
Later, as the storm outside intensified, they settled by the fire. Kimi claimed his usual spot on the couch, a steaming mug of tea in hand, while Seb sprawled beside him, resting his head gently in Kimi’s lap. The flickering shadows cast by the fire wrapped around them like a soft blanket, the only sounds being the crackle of burning logs and the occasional howl of wind outside. Kimi’s fingers instinctively wove through Seb’s hair, a touch so tender it sent delightful shivers through him. Seb closed his eyes, letting the warmth of the moment envelop him, but thoughts continued to swirl within.
“Do you miss it?” he asked suddenly, breaking the comfortable silence. Kimi paused, his hand stilling for a moment before resuming its gentle motion. “No,” he said simply. “I had my time. Now… this is enough.”
Seb’s heart tightened at the raw honesty in Kimi's words. He opened his eyes to meet Kimi’s gaze, their connection deepening in the flickering firelight. “Is this enough for you?” Seb asked, his voice softer, almost vulnerable. Kimi’s lips curved into a subtle smile—rare and precious—one that held a universe of meaning behind its simplicity. “More than enough,” he replied, sincerity ringing in his tone.
Their first kiss came slowly, almost hesitantly, as if they were both savoring the fragility of the moment. But when their lips finally met, it was as if the world outside melted away, leaving only the warmth and sweetness of their connection. As the snow continued to drift down outside, blanketing everything in white, Seb realized he had discovered something he hadn’t even known he was searching for—a profound sense of belonging, peace, and home, right there in Kimi's arms.
The next morning dawned with a pristine layer of fresh snow that transformed the world outside into a winter wonderland. Soft light filtered through the frosted windows, filling the cabin with a luminous warmth. Seb stirred awake, a wide smile gracing his face as he recalled the laughter and intimacy they’d shared the night before. Turning his head, he saw Kimi, still half-asleep, slouched on the couch with a steaming mug of coffee. The usual stoic expression lingered, but a hint of a smile danced at the corners of his mouth when their eyes met.
Without wasting a moment, Seb slipped into warm clothes, excitement bubbling within him at the sight of the untouched snow just outside. As he stepped through the door, the sharp, invigorating cold air filled his lungs, enhancing the beauty of the extraordinary winter landscape before him.
With a playful glint in his eye, Seb scooped up a handful of snow and hurled it at Kimi, who stood in the doorway with a raised eyebrow. The snowball burst harmlessly against the side of the cabin, and Kimi chuckled softly, shaking his head. “Nice aim,” he remarked dryly, although a spark of amusement lit up his gaze. Seb couldn't help but grin, undeterred by the playful banter. He sprinted toward Kimi, who ducked swiftly and retaliated with a perfectly aimed snowball of his own, hitting Seb right in the back. Laughter erupted as Seb swung around, feigning indignation before launching himself into a playful, snow-filled chase.
They darted around the cabin, snow flying in every direction, their laughter ringing out like music against the tranquil winter silence. Seb zigzagged between the trees, trying to outsmart Kimi's thoughtful ambushes. With every snowball tossed and missed, their competitive spirits ignited, turning their morning into a blissful blur of joy and excitement. As the snowball fight continued, they moved in delightful sync that spoke of the years they had shared—friends, competitors, and now something more. Eventually, they collapsed into the snow, panting and breathless, their hearts racing from both the cold and the thrill of the moment.
They exchanged glances, still grinning widely, the fresh snow settling around them like a gentle embrace. Kimi, ever the picture of nonchalance, rolled onto his side, propping himself up on one elbow, surveying their whimsical snowy world. “Not bad for a morning,” he said, a rare hint of warmth coloring his otherwise stoic demeanor. Seb laughed, taking in the pristine white landscape that felt like a fairy tale. “And to think it all started with a terrible throw.” Kimi shrugged, a smile breaking through his cool facade. “Maybe you should focus on the next throw instead. It might be your only chance.”
With a playful gleam in his eye, Seb scooped up another handful of snow, ready to continue their lighthearted assault while Kimi prepared to defend himself. Their laughter echoed through the enchanting woods as they tossed snow at each other, two friends finding joy in the simple pleasures of the moment amid the breathtaking beauty of winter.
By late morning, the snowball fight had given way to a slower, quieter stroll through the snow-covered forest. They walked in companionable silence, the occasional crunch of snow beneath their boots the only sound. Seb couldn’t stop marveling at their surroundings—everything felt like it had been lifted from a storybook. Sunlight filtered through the snow-laden branches, creating a sparkling canopy above them. He turned his head to find Kimi watching him, his expression unreadable but soft.
“What?” Seb asked, a smile teasing at the corners of his lips.
“Nothing,” Kimi replied, though the faintest hint of a smile tugged at his own lips. “You just look… happy.”
Seb slowed his steps, letting Kimi’s words sink in. He realized he was happy, in a way he hadn’t been in years. Not the fleeting adrenaline rush of a podium finish or the polite satisfaction of shaking hands after a race—this was something deeper, something quieter, but far more profound.
They reached a small clearing, where the snow stretched out like an untouched canvas. A frozen lake reflected the pale winter sun, its surface smooth and shimmering like glass. Seb stopped, gazing out at the scene with awe. “It’s beautiful,” he murmured, his breath visible in the cold air.
Kimi stepped beside him, hands tucked in his pockets. “It’s always like this here,” he said, his voice low, almost reverent. “You just never stayed long enough to see it.”
Seb turned his head slightly, his eyes meeting Kimi’s. “Maybe I didn’t know what I was missing.”
They stood there for a while, side by side, as the world around them remained silent and still. Seb’s thoughts drifted as he stared at the lake, the vast expanse of ice and snow making him feel small but somehow at peace. Without thinking, he reached out, his gloved hand brushing against Kimi’s. The touch was brief, tentative, but it lingered between them like the first spark of a fire.
Kimi didn’t pull away. Instead, he glanced down at their hands, then up at Seb, his blue eyes searching, as though he were trying to read something written in Seb’s expression. Seb gave him a small, reassuring smile, and Kimi, after a long moment, nodded almost imperceptibly. “Come on,” Kimi said quietly. “I want to show you something.”
He led Seb along a narrow path through the trees, their shoulders occasionally brushing as they walked. They didn’t speak, but the silence felt far from empty. When they emerged from the woods, Seb found himself standing on a gentle hill that overlooked the cabin and the surrounding forest. The view took his breath away. “It’s like the world ends here,” Seb said, his voice full of wonder.
Kimi turned to look at him, his gaze soft but intent. “Or begins.”
The words caught Seb off guard. He shifted his eyes to Kimi, his breath hitching as he saw the openness on Kimi's face, the vulnerability he rarely allowed anyone to see. For a moment, neither of them spoke, the unspoken understanding between them filling the space where words might have been.
Slowly, Seb closed the distance between them, his heart pounding as he took a leap of faith. He raised his hand to Kimi’s cheek, his fingers brushing against his cool skin. Kimi didn’t flinch. He leaned into the touch, his eyes never leaving Seb’s.
“You make it hard to leave,” Seb whispered, his voice trembling slightly.
“Then don’t,” Kimi said simply, his tone steady and sure.
Seb’s chest tightened at the quiet intensity of Kimi’s words. When their lips met, it wasn’t rushed or hesitant—it was deliberate, like the first notes of a song they’d both been waiting to hear. The kiss was soft and slow, carrying with it the warmth of every shared moment and unspoken feeling between them. The cold around them seemed to melt away, leaving only the heat of their connection.
When they finally pulled back, Kimi rested his forehead against Seb’s, his breath mingling with Seb’s in the frosty air. “Stay,” he murmured, the word almost lost in the wind. Seb smiled, his heart full. “I’m not going anywhere.”
As they made their way back to the cabin, the snow began to fall again, soft and gentle, blanketing the world around them in quiet perfection. Once inside, they shed their coats and boots, and Kimi stoked the fire until it roared warmly in the hearth. They settled on the couch, Kimi pulling Seb close, their legs tangled together beneath a thick blanket.
Seb rested his head on Kimi’s chest, listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat. He felt Kimi’s hand brush through his hair, the touch light and soothing. “You were right,” Seb said softly, his voice muffled against Kimi’s sweater.
“About what?”
“This,” Seb said, tilting his head up to meet Kimi’s gaze. “This is enough. More than enough.”
Kimi’s lips curved into the faintest smile, and he pressed a kiss to Seb’s temple, lingering there for a moment before pulling back. Outside, the snow fell in a mesmerizing dance, but inside, Seb felt like he had found the warmth he’d been searching for all along.
