Chapter Text
The team had some unexpected down time having been all told that they needed to use their personal days before they loose them. So they decided to go away together and most definitely not camping they had all shouted at the captain. So instead they had all gathered around on their second last shift and decided to pick somewhere to go for a few days. Both Maya and Ben has stated that they were bringing there better halves with them if they were going because it wasn't often that they managed to get time like this together. No one really cared if they came, saying it would be nice to spend time with them as well. So once they had agreed on that they had all sat around the beanery and looked for somewhere to go. In the end it was Vic who found a place big enough for them to have their own space and it was right on the beach and better yet it was only a couple hours drive away.
"Should we take the vans again?" Travis asked retiring to the vans they had used when they had all gone camping.
"Yeah, No, No thank you." Maya said instantly without even missing a beat making everyone look at her.
"Uh, Cap, what's wrong with sharing with us?' Travis asked slightly offended.
"Yeah, no. Because I'm gonna take Carina out on a date while we are there and, it means if we are going to be there for the week we can do our own things as well." The blonde said instantly making Andy look at Robert.
"Oh, yeah we are not driving together, you four can though." Andy stated pointing to Jack, Dean, Travis and Vic.
It was decided that they would meet at Ten at the station and set off from there and then at 12 they would stop for lunch before finishing the last twenty minutes of their drive. Maya had gone home that night with an extra bounce in her step that made her girlfriend smile and ask her what she was so excited about. Carina too thought it was a great idea and was excited to join them even if it meant that she had to be in the same space as Jack for a week but they could survive being nice to each other for that long. Since they both had to work the next day until late Carina insisted that they both pack that night just in case they would have to find time to go and get anything that they would need that night or the next day. Thankfully though they didn't need to go for anything and managed to get sometime to snuggle on the couch and watch some mind numbing TV before going to bed.
Unfortunately the next day both of women's shift ran latter then they appreciated but the blonde was at least finished before midnight. Carina on the other hand didn't get home until just after 2am and by the time she had a quick bite to eat and a quick basic shower to wash the smell of hospital away it was pretty much 3am when she crawled into the bed next to the fire captain. Needless to say when the alarm blared the next morning to get them up the brunette was less than impressed. But alas they shared a shower together before Carina made them some breakfast as the blonde loaded up the Doctors Porsche since it was bigger than her car. Maya could tell though by they way that the other woman was sitting at the table tiredly reading the News paper that she wasn't ready to be awake.
"Come on Babe, I'm driving and you are getting some more sleep." Maya said holding out her hand for the car keys as they headed down to the car ready to leave for the station to meet the others.
"You sure, Bambina, I don't mind." Carina asked as they reached the car, the firefighter opening the passenger door pestering for the doctor to get in.
"Positive, hunny." Maya smiled taking the keys smiling as the Doctor leaned in for a kiss before sliding into the car.
When they reached the station they were second to arrive after Ben and Maranda but just before Sullivan and Andy. OF course the Liuetenant had to ask where her best friends other half was when she spotted her standing speaking to Ben and Bailey. Said Liuetenant awed and practically melted when Maya pointed to the car where the sleeping Doctor could clearly been seen. Bailey had said that she had a long shift and a very difficult labour. It wasn't long though until everyone was there and they were on their way again this time to their destination. By the time that they had reached their stop for lunch Maya and Carina was already there leaning against the trunk of the car waiting on the others, the brunette feeling more awake.
"You drive like a maniac, Bishop." Ben laughed as he pass the couple.
"How, Many speeding tickets have you gotten?" Robert asked.
"None, why I don't drive that fast." Maya said as they started walking to the dinner earning a scoff from everyone else including her girlfriend.
They didn't take to long to stop and eat at the dinner all eager to get to the rental house and get their vacation started. The drive from the dinner wasn't that long maybe twenty minutes and they were pulling up a long drive way to the house they had rented and parking.
"Cap, gets the master room." Travis called as they started unpacking the cars.
"Guys we don't care what room." The blonde smiled.
"Cap, gets the master." Vic and Ben said at the same time.
Now that they had settled on who was getting the master bedroom they all picked where they were sleeping they all started unpacking their things before heading back down the stairs. They decided that today was just going to be a little bit of a lazy day and set themselves on the beach that was literally at the end of the deck. Of course they had to take a cooler of beer and wine, the fire bit for tonight and the BBQ so they could cook later. Before they knew it everyone was settled on the beach and happily relaxing. Maya had gone into the shed around the back in the garden to see if they had deck chairs which she took out but she also found a surf board and some board wax and took it to join them.
"Babe, do you mind?" Maya asked pointing between the bard and the water.
"No, bambina. Please do." Carina smiled sitting on a towel between Andy and Vic.
Grinning at her girlfriend Maya settled the board in the sand and got to work waxing it, the doctor managing to sneak a couple photos of the blonde. Carina just sat there staring at the blonde watching as the muscles in her arms and shoulders flexed as she waxed the bored. She knew that the captain can surf the blonde had mentioned it once during a conversation but knowing it and actually seeing is apparently two different things. So she just sat there watching Maya wax the bored. She was so busy looking at her that it never even registered that the blonde had stopped and was making her way over to her. Maya had already strapped the bored to her ankle and was putting on sunscreen and guzzling a bottle of water and quickly eating a banana. Then she leaned in placing her hands on Carinas shoulders before leaning down and kissing her. Carina smiled cupping her face kissing her back before her girlfriend scooped the bored off and started jogging off to the water.
“You’re staring.” Vic laughed.
“Si.” Carina smiled making Vic and Andy laugh.
“You got it bad.” Andy laughed.
“We looking at the same thing, Si?”
“Fair enough.” The lieutenant smiled.
The rest of the week they spent doing things together or in individual groups, hell Maya even spent a decent amount of time catching some waves. Maya and Carina even got in a little date night together. It was nothing too fancy they just just went out to a nice restaurant and then went put for some drinks before taking a late night walk on the beach when they got back to the house.
on the second last nigh of there vacation the spent it doing pretty much the same things as the first night. The sun was going down but it was still hot considering it was the middle of summer. They had the fire pit going and the bbq had been on, food sitting beside them on a table and more than enough coolers filled with beer, wine and whisky, oh and of course vodka for Vic. This time though instead of sitting on the beach now that the sun was going down they had already relocated to the back deck to watch the sun down. Well everyone but Maya she was standing halfway between the water and the house short on and a bikini top with an open flannel shirt to keep the chill off. She had a bottle of beer dangling between her fingers and one hand in her back pocket. Her face turned up to the sky eyes shut enjoying the breeze, she looked beautiful and Carina had to take the opportunity to take yet another picture of her girlfriend as she stood leaning against the rail of the dec.
“It’s been a long time since I’ve seen her so relaxed.” Andy said to the Italian from where she sat on one of the deck chairs breaking the comfortable silence between them.
“This has been good for her, she carries so much on those shoulders.” She smiled.
“No, I mean yes, she needed a vaccination but before you she would never have taken one.”
“Before you there was self care Wednesday and monogamy is for the week or very very dedicated.” Vic started but was interrupted by Andy again.
“What I’m trying to say, she’s finally stopped and settled took a minute. It’s no longer eyes forward. She’s learning to put some of that weight down again and that because of you. So thank you for not giving up on you when you so easily could have. For looking after, for loving her. For showing her what it feels like to be loved like that. For seeing past those damn walls she builds and the armour she puts on.” Andy said pausing to take a drink from her glass of wine. “It’s no longer eyes forward, she’s learn to stop, rest, love. She’s finally free. So thank you for loving her."
"You, don't need to thank me for loving her, she makes it easy. All I want is for her to be happy." Carina smiled before turning back to look at the blonde standing on the sand.
Smiling at the other woman again Carina made her way down the steps and down to her girlfriend coming to stand beside her wrapping her arm around the Captains waist as she stood next to her. The couple were happy enough to stand there in a comfortable silence looking out over the ocean as the sun set, the blonde resting her head on the taller woman's shoulder. The hand that was resting on the firefighters waist slowly slipped to the small of her back and then up her spine until eventually it was resting on the back of the blondes neck fingers gently scratching into her hair line. The effect was almost instant, Carina felt Maya practically melt into her hand as she wrapped her own arm around the brunettes waist.
Maya couldn't remember a time when she felt so relaxed. She couldn't actually remember the last time when she stopped to do something as simple as enjoy the breeze and sun on her face. To just enjoy the moment and just be there, as Diane says to stop and rest and love. When she felt Carinas hand slid up her back and rest on the back of her neck she practically felt like she was floating or in those clouds she so desperately wanted to lie in when she was a teenager. She took a minute just to feel everything, the sand beneath her bare feet, the end of the sun hitting her face just right, the breeze taking the the slightly uncomfortableness of heat off her skin, the heat of her girlfriends hand on the back of her neck. Then she turned to face the other woman and smiled resting her arms on her shoulders, her beer bottle dangling at her fingertips behind the Italian. Carina smiled at Maya wrapping both her arms around her waist so that her hands rested just above her backside earning a smile in return from the smaller woman who cupped her face and brought her into a kiss. It was the kind of kiss that was slow and deep as lips moved together in perfect synchronisation until the need for air became to much It didn't stop them though, they would pull back for a second take a breath and share shorter, quicker but just as deep kisses.
"God, you're beautiful." Maya smiled tucking a stray strand of hair behind the Italians ear. "I love you." Maya smiled.
"I love you too, Bella." Carina smiled stealing another kiss. "You want to stay here a bit longer or going the others, they are making s'mores, I've never hand one." She grinned.
"Lets go get you a s'more than, shall we?" She grinned as they turned to walk back to join the others hand in hand.
The couple sat down next to one another on a bench where they were instantly handed new drinks and the things they needed to make s'more. At some point when it had gotten darker Vic had sent Maya a few pictures she had taken of the couple on the back before they had joined them for the s'mores. The blonde had been showing her best friend something on her phone when they had come through so Andy had gotten the chance to see them as well stating how beautiful the pictures looked. Then the Liuetenant looked at the Caption and smiled so big it almost hurt as she took a sop of her beer.
"What?" Maya asked smiling back.
"No, longer afraid to sit at the kitchen table." Andy smiled.
"No, longer afraid to sit at the kitchen table." Maya smiled and then just like that her face straightened then she placed her whisky on the table kissed her girlfriend on the cheek and went inside quickly followed by a confused Andy.
"What's happening?" Andy asked following the blonde into her room and watching as she rummaged around one of the drawers.
"Text Vic and tell her to be ready with the camera, that she's gotta record it and send it to me, but not to tell anyone." Maya replied still looking through the door.
"Okay, but again what is happening?" Andy asked again as she did as asked.
"Ahah" Maya grinned holding the small blue box. "No longer afraid to sit at the table." She smiled.
"Fuck." Was all Andy could get out.
Grinning Maya took the ring out and held it in her hand before they headed back out to join the other get a confused look from Vic as they sat down. Maya quickly poured herself another drink before sowing it all in one and settling back down next to Carina quickly shooting a text to Vic telling her to start recording them now. Then she placed her hand on the Italian thigh and held the ring between her thumb and index finger of her other hand and gently gave the thing beneath her hand a squeeze. of course feeling the hand squeeze her thigh Carina turned her head to face the other woman about to ask her if she was okay due to the sudden exit to see her girlfriends brightly smiling face.
"Marry Me?," Maya asked completely forgetting that she even had the ring in her hand.
"What?" Carina asked with a large smile.
"Marry Me, please?" The blonde asked again this time holding the ring up in-between them with a smile just as big.
"Si, yes." Carina smiled happily her eyes watering with tears.
Grinning Maya took the doctors hand and slipped the ring on her finger before cupping her face and bringing her into a deep kiss as everyone cheered around them before engulfing them in a group hug.
"I'm So proud of you." Andy whispered in her best friends ear.
Yeah, she could rest now, love now, she was Safe.
