"Kinger," someone finally speaks up— he recognizes that voice— Gangle! He looks at her, the girl in the corner— she isn't made of ribbons anymore, which feels a little uncanny to see. Her hair is dyed platinum and her skin's a brilliant shade of oak. He wants to compliment her— she looks so nice like this! Alas, he isn't sure if that'll be much appreciated right now. Oh well.
"Kinger," Gangle whispers again, anxious, voice soft and cushioned like she were disguising a blow. "You're not in the circus. We escaped five days ago."

Ordinarily, Kinger preferred being in the dark. Especially being in such an unfamiliar environment, it was easy to get disoriented and confused without it. But at night, when he was trying to sleep, he'd really rather not have his wife on the mind if he could help it.
Turning a light on would be easy, if only he weren't currently sharing his space with five roommates he'd really rather not be a bother to.

The cast of the Digital Circus make it out! Except, obviously, Caine - a fact that was agreed upon when the humans all left, and Caine was shut down, allegedly for good.
C&A as a company has been defunct for a long while, and while everyone else is trying to pick themselves back up, finding their way in a world where consequences really, truly matter again, Kinger, or rather Grant, finds he just can't bring himself to leave behind the AI he helped make.
Or in other words, a Kinger- and Caine-centered fic post-escape (or escape AU depending on how the movie turns out lmao), back in the real world, where everyone's trying to start again.

Not a particularly unusual notification for Grant to get, considering he had been a computer scientist for more than three decades. It was slightly more unusual, however, considering the notification said that the code had been modified by Grant himself- something he had definitely not done- and also considering the system being altered had been shut down more than eighteen years ago.From: C&A - LOCAL [HQ]
ALERT !
[1337 /usr/ai/agent/caine] DELETED....What the hell.
Or: Six people have been living their normal lives, entirely unaware of the copies of their consciousness trapped in a brightly-coloured digital hellscape. That is, at least, until said copies escape the Circus, and six people wake up with both sets of memories, determined that the family they formed in a very different reality is one they will find again.
