Summary
By the time 1989 rolls around, Hob is tired.
The world moves faster now than it did, full of flashing lights and cars and loud music and crowds, and yet, that quickening pace makes every second tick by ever so slowly. He can practically feel the sands of time trickling through him, hour by hour, day by day, decade by decade. It’s been six-hundred years, give or take, and the grains ought to be eroding away at him by now. Instead, they slip through like he’s a sieve.
It’s exhausting, the twentieth century. Between the wars and Modernist poetry and fucking credit scores, he thinks it might be nice to sleep for a century.
In which Hob Gadling waits, hopes, drinks, swears, and, after six-hundred years, finally come face-to-face with Death.

Shirley Tate: Why are you bringing this issue to court? What exactly are you hoping for? Revenge? Money?
[Bryant flashes the crowd a cheeky grin.]
Park: As your lawyer, I am asking you to think before you speak, Mark.
[Bryant’s face falls; he is serious again.]
Bryant: You’re right. I’m not the only victim of the AM. I’m not the only Atypical who has been hurt by their practices and their policies. I’m not the only person who has been hurt by the US government and their willingness to brush us under the rug. But maybe I can be one of the last.
Shirley Tate: You haven’t answered my question. What is it you want?
Bryant: Justice. For me, and for the future.

Sophie isn’t sure she’s any closer to knowing who she is, but she’s always known Jane, and despite the changes, it’s still her. Yes, there are more lines on her face, and her clothes fit just a bit better than they had on Nemea, sleeves bunching over new, lean muscle and a broader frame that she tries to hide under an ill-fitting sweatshirt that must have belonged to Moreau in high school. Her hair has been cut — gone is the long, messy braid, now replaced by a sleek, severe bob cut that barely grazes her chin. She almost looks Medean.
Sophie still wants to kiss her.
Fuck, she’s got it bad.
It's been a year since Sophie was whisked away by Omikron to delegate with the Others - a year since Jane was taken to Medea, a year since she's seen her, held her hand, kissed her - and yet, she still hasn't figured out how to say "I love you."

Martin Blackwood is many things: a poet, a boyfriend, a son, a caretaker… and, though he doesn’t want to admit it, an Archivist. The knowledge sits heavy in him, but he does not ask Jon for confirmation.
As he ascends the steps of the tower at the beginning of the end of the ruined world to kill the Archive, he wonders if ignorance can be bliss even if it's feigned.
Another take on MAG200 told through memories, statements, and the realization that even a monster will burn if doused in love like gasoline.

You used to pity them. You used to be curious about them, used to be eager to learn how they worked and lived and loved. Your friends — their names do not fit in your mouth now that you’re trapped in this human form — they told you that you were a fool to get so close.
Humans, they said, were dangerous, but you didn’t understand.
One wrong step and humans bleed. One wrong fall and they die. They are fragile and breakable and their lives are so fucking small.
You wanted to protect them.
They want to dissect you.

Samantha Barnes really doesn’t know how terrifying she is.
“Oliver, hi. Come in,” she says warmly and steps aside, holding the door open just enough for him to step over the threshold into the foyer, as if he isn’t staring at her, wide-eyed and frozen, on her porch.
Mark has long teased Oliver about his… reluctance around Samantha Barnes, but Oliver thinks his boyfriend is just blind to the facts. She may seem unassuming, with her tendency to stutter and smile and wear oversized sweaters that are frayed at the hems from how often she picks at them, but she is also still a director at one of the most powerful institutions with real influence over atypicals. Oliver knows that she’s got a vindictive streak a mile-wide.
In which Oliver asks for Sam's blessing before proposing to Mark.

The girl looks between them skeptically and blows another bubble. “No luggage?”
Oliver snorts. “What do you think?”
“Hm.” The girl hits a key on her keyboard and shoots them her fakest smile. “Well, I hope you enjoy your stay at the Days Inn. Please call the front desk if you have any questions or problems,” she says and promptly places a plaque on the counter declaring boldly “DO NOT DISTURB.”
Mark gets the hint. He grabs Oliver by the elbow and tugs him toward the elevator. “Let’s go the fuck to bed.”

Summary
Adam is a total fucking sucker.
He’s always sort of known this about himself — after all, he goes weak in the knees every time Caleb so much as smiles at him and that stupid, smug empath even knows — but letting himself get talked into attending the football party is a new level of pathetic-head-over-heels first love crap that he swore he would never fall into.
Adam Hayes does not belong at parties, especially when they’re to celebrate a sport. Caleb spent twenty minutes trying to explain what a first down was before giving up and calling him a lost cause. He’s glad that Caitlin is willing to sit with him at games, because apparently it’s his obligation as a good boyfriend to attend, but it’s been a few weeks now and he still has no freaking clue what’s going on.
Furthermore, the football guys are… well. Caleb aside, Adam doesn’t exactly run in the same circles that they do. Adam is bookish, he’s nerdy, he’s emo and he’s more than a little gay.
In his experience, football players aren’t exactly lining up to make his acquaintance unless it’s to throw him into a locker.

Not all individuals who encounter trauma will manifest; likewise, not all who manifest have faced trauma. In spite of this, there is a startling correlation. This paper will examine several case studies and seek to understand how we may more closely study this phenomenon.
---
Adam can’t breathe. It’s worse - worse than what, he doesn’t know anymore, because his brain is mush and his head is spinning and his memories refuse to contextualize - hospital, bathtub, locker room, sticky sharp pain, bandages that itch, scars like moonlight - but he knows it’s worse. The world has closed in on him.
----
A canon divergent AU where Adam Hayes manifests as an atypical during Safe House that explores his journey as he struggles to control his new ability, contend with his family’s shady history with the atypical community, and communicate with the people he loves. Framed with snippets from an academic paper about atypical manifestation that explores how trauma can be a trigger for many atypical abilities. -

Arthur only understands a world of magic and the monsters who make you cry and the monsters who hold you and pet your hair until you fall asleep in their arms.
He knows he is not like the children on the mainland, but the others on the island are not like him, either. Their cheeks may also burn pink with shame and the handprint of their master, but they do not have fire in their veins.
The other children do not know how close he is to breaking.
When Arthur is eleven, he tries to send a letter.

Summary
Adam has always been home in time for curfew, has never skimped on his chores, has never received less than an A in a class, and has never broken a rule — mostly because, due to him being so good, there have never been rules in place to break.
That is, until now.
“You’re kidding me,” Adam can’t help blurting out in disbelief. He curls his hands into the couch cushions to anchor himself. He knows he can’t be trusted not to just stand and start shouting. “But it wasn’t Caleb’s fault!”
“We know,” his mother says gently. She takes his father’s hand and squeezes it once, presumably for moral support. “But he needs help with his anger, and we want you to be safe as he works on that.”
Following the events of Safehouse, Adam Hayes grapples with his complicated place the world, confronts his familial fears, and sneaks out to see his boyfriend.

Erin Updyke: I still can’t believe this is for real. Are we in a comic book?
Erin Welsh: We might be in a comic book. That firsthand account was from an interview I conducted a few weeks ago with Mark Bryant, one of the leading voices in the atypical rights movement. Mark is a mimic —
Erin U: What?
Erin W: I know, I know - and his older sister, Dr. Joan Bryant, is one of the current directors of the Boston Atypical Monitor Facility. We’ll hear more about her later this episode.
Erin U: What a family.
Erin W: Yeah, they’re pretty amazing. Anyway, welcome to episode 222 of This Podcast Will Kill You. I’m Erin Welsh.
Erin U: I’m Erin Allman Updyke and if you haven’t figured it out yet, today we will be talking about - Atypical Genetic Mutation! Or, as most people call it, atypicality.

A year after atypicals are revealed to the world, Erin Allman Updyke and Erin Welsh, hosts of This Podcast Will Kill You, shed some light of the epidemiology of Atypical Genetic Mutation, otherwise known as atypicality. No knowledge of TPWKY is necessary. -

Mark truly hadn’t expected Alex to be so enthusiastic when Oliver first mentioned taking a trip to the beach.
“I didn’t take you for an ocean sort of guy,” Mark had admitted after listening to the man wax lyrical about waves for five minutes. “Kind of thought with the fire and all, it would be… I don’t know. Unappealing?”
Alex had just shrugged. “Fires need to be put out eventually. Anyway, I’m from California.”
Oliver nearly spat out his drink. “Oh god, don’t tell me you were a surfer or something,” he said, already taking out his phone to program “California Girls” as Alex’s new ringtone. “And if you were, I demand pictures of you in those stupid suits.”
Mark knows that Oliver would like any picture of Alex, but he privately agrees that a wetsuit would be a nice way to start their compilation.
Mark and Oliver take Alex to the beach and wait as long as they need to.

Doug Eiffel knows what it feels like to be inches from death.
It comes fast, in his experience, even when it feels slow. The choking rise of water, the crushing isolation of guilt, the sweet, burning slide of whiskey down his throat - it’s faster than you’d think. One second, the world is moving too fast around you. The next, it’s not.
This death, though? This one is not fast.
His veins are thrumming with (a virus, a death sentence, a penance) adrenaline, so fast and loud that it pounds in his ears, a static indistinguishable from the radio during a storm. Time is crawling now.
He wonders if it’ll ever speed up again. If that’s when he’ll know. If that’s when it’ll happen.
If that’s when he’ll die.
A reflection on death, decima, and expendability in the vastness of space.

“You’re Mark,” she says, factual and clipped as if she isn’t a stranger on his doorstep in the middle of July. Her gaze is unrelenting, her eyes dark and somber, and Mark is about to ask what the fuck she wants with him when she says that name. “You know Damien.”
Mark generally prides himself on his ability to comport himself, on his ability to mask his pain and rage behind jokes and cocky grins. And yet - there is no smile he can muster, no funny comment he can make. “You know Damien,” as if Damien did not take his broken pieces and put them back together wrong. “You know Damien,” as if that phrase itself isn’t ripping through the messy stitches left behind.
His face must show it, because the woman grimaces, nods, and looks away. “Me too,” she says softly. It’s like her own stitches have become undone. “I’m Neon.”

Summary
It’s his senior year of college, and Adam Hayes is doing all right. Sure, he has no idea what he wants to do with his degree, he can’t seem to hold down a relationship, and four years ago, his high school sweetheart nearly beat a man to death and was disappeared by a top-secret government facility - which happens to be run by his aunt - but honestly. He’s fine.
So is Caitlin Park, who has a perfectly planned path that she intends to follow straight to success, no matter how often her gaze strays. So is Ryan Tran, who knows a lie when he hears one but can’t explain why as the knowledge picks away at him with each interaction.
All they want to do is get to graduation and maybe figure out how to breathe freely. Oh, and find out what happened to Caleb Michaels. No big deal.
They’re sure he’s fine… Right?

Summary
Sometimes, when it gets bad, Jon thinks about Martin’s hands.
He’d always liked Martin’s hands, even before he admitted to liking Martin. Inky fingertips, cracked, dry palms, and a gentle touch. Knuckles that tightened around the arms of a chair, around a notebook, around a fistful of Jon’s hair as he stroked it gently out of his face while they kissed among the rubble of a decimated village.
Fingers that wrapped around his throat.
