"What happened to Jordie?" The question hung heavy in the air. Maybe he made a mistake by asking. Kaz definitely didn't want to answer, but Jesper had to know.

Jordie wasn't a Dreg, he was sure of it because he’d never heard anyone else mention the name. It must be someone from before Kaz joined the gang. Was there even a time like that? He tried to imagine a Kaz who wasn't running half of the Barrel, who wasn't whispered about in the darkest alleys. Impossible.
"He died," was all Kaz said, in his business voice, one that was all practicality and no emotion.
"You don't have to tell me everything, I just want to know who he was. I think I get to know that much."
