The wind was biting, and the morning dew had somehow already set in. His spot was cold, wet, and impractical all at the same time. It was why he’d chosen it. No one would expect it. No one would find him. No one would see him.

'It’s an uncharacteristically warm December day when Will finally breaks. There’s a group of them all hanging out at the radio station, lounging around after one of Robin’s shows. Mike is perched on the arm of the couch, laughing at something Lucas had just said. Dustin is next to him, smirking as well. Will is slumped into a different chair, a little off to the side, and he might be pouting a little bit, for the millionth time today. But, who’s counting?
They aren’t meaning to, really, and he knows it… but they’re excluding him, again. And Will can’t take it anymore.'

Will can't help but feel like one of his friends has been treating him differently since he came out. Everything comes to a head, and Will and Mike finally talk about what he'd said to him in his garage all those years ago.

"Mike runs his tongue over the bottom of Will’s lips, and they’re forced to pull apart, but only because one of the lights above them literally explodes. They both take a step back, breathing heavy. Will’s face is wet, and he instinctively goes to wipe his eyes, only to realize that they aren’t his tears, they’re Mike’s.
“I hate when you yell at me.” Mike says, and he sounds so broken that Will wants to crawl into a hole and never let anyone look at him again. He feels tears prick at the back of his own eyes, and fights to keep them contained. He feels like this isn’t about him, even though he knows it absolutely is,
“I- I’m so sorry.” he replies, and he is. It sounds pathetic, even to him. Mike laughs, but it’s more of a sob."

It didn’t feel right to say they’d won, even though they technically did. They were all more comfortable with the term ‘defeat’. They’d been trying to get back to some sense or normalcy ever since. It hadn’t been going well, which was stupid, because it was supposed to be great! Will thinks that maybe they all feel a little guilty that they aren’t enjoying winning as much.”
AKA the party wins, and they’re all fine, except for the ways that they really, really aren’t.

"What are you doing here?" Mike's face dropped as his eyes slid from El, past Max, and over to Will, "And what are you doing with them?"
"Shopping," El said with a blank expression on her face.
Max smirked, "This is their new look, what do you think?"
"You know she's not allowed to be here. And Will, how could you just run off like that, we were worried!" Mike glared straight at Max despite the fact part of what he said was directed at Will.
"What are they, your little pets? El can't leave the cabin, and god forbid Will strays more than three feet from your shadow, despite the fact you were completely ignoring him!" Max snapped right back.

Or... A rewrite of Stranger Things season 3 where Will leaves the mall with El and Max and helps them investigate while growing closer to both girls and becoming more confident in himself. Meanwhile, Mike considers what it might mean for him that he's more upset that his best friend ditched him to hang out with someone else than he is about his girlfriend breaking up with him.
