Summary
Just like always, Quinn finds herself watching without meaning to. She’s struck by the unfairness of it all—how Santana glows in a way Quinn can’t unless it’s manufactured. How Santana doesn’t really seem to have to try to be beautiful and smart and funny. While all Quinn does is try.
She wants to hate how easy Santana makes it seem. Thinks to herself that maybe she would if it was anyone other than Santana shining in front of her. Instead, Quinn sits there quietly and thinks about how she’s somehow always in complete awe of the girl next to her.
Quinn looks away when Santana shifts forward, completely embarrassed that she’s been staring. But like a moth to a flame - inevitable and expected - she finds herself eventually turning her gaze back to Santana. She counts her breaths and waits. Tries not to say anything stupid, and ignores when she feels that familiar ache settle behind her ribs. Something Quinn certainly doesn’t have the language for right now.
She wonders, distantly, if this is what it feels like to stand in front of The Mona Lisa. To stand in front of something beautiful and know it doesn’t belong to you. She wonders if those people also felt captivated and insecure; curious and unworthy.
