Summary
In the year 2024, History grad student Ray Garraty is writing his thesis on the Second American Civil War that resulted in freeing the American people and outlawing the Long Walk. Most documentation regarding the inner workings of the Long Walk were destroyed during the Civil War. Then a stack of journals shows up on his front door step, all starting with detailing an event from May 4th, 1968 that has been scrubbed from history.

He lifts his hand to Stebbins’ cheek tentatively, ghosting his finger over the slash. It’s still tender, of course, and Stebbins flinches even though Olson isn’t really touching him. The look on his face remains increasingly confused, looking down the bridge of his nose, straight-on at Olson.
“Pretty,” Olson says, after a moment.
“What?”
“You’re pretty,” Olson blurts out, without thinking. He eyes the gash. Surely, it’ll leave a permanent scar; knowing Stebbins, he wouldn’t like that one bit. But Olson didn’t care. If anything, it enhanced Stebbins’ sharp cheekbones. “Really fucking pretty.”

Summary
Two dragonflies zip by. They seem to be minorly intrigued by Billy’s presence as they turn back and zip towards him, lingering a few feet away from him. Billy watches them, transfixed on their thin, blue color bodies. Their translucent wings flap rapidly. It’s almost impossible to make out the patterns on their wings. After about a minute, the dragonflies zip away in a blue blur. Perhaps they grew tired of staring at Billy’s rather boring breakfast.
“Hey!”
Billy looks up, minorly startled. It’s the guy he saw at the store again - the one with the odd amount of clementines and packets of gum. He walks over and stops, standing in front of Billy while peeling a small orange. He puts the orange rind pieces into his pants pocket.OR
At the risk of burning himself out, PhD student Billy Stebbins takes his advisors' advice and heads out to Acadia National Park for a week. Billy hopes that the change of scenery will help him rediscover his motivation for his research. While at the park, he meets Hank Olson, a young ecologist monitoring the growth of the wildflowers in the area.
