They both go still for a minute, breathing through it hard as they settle into the weight of what they’re doing. After all this time, what they’re finally doing.
It hangs there between them, huge and ugly, ripped open like a raw nerve, this unacknowledged thing they’ve danced around for decades now laid bare in the way Niall can feel the throb of Ruben’s heartbeat inside of him like this.

His fingers find the right chords and he thrums into the starting notes of the next song, and then the next, while the humans below him scream as though each new song is the best thing they’ve ever heard. He stares them down through his mask and watches them flush with pleasure, blows their offered kisses right back to them, bends over his bass and plays hard at them. In return, they sing their Papa’s words loud like hymns.
It’s fun being worshipped like this. Being on stage feels good.

You think about all the stories you’ve heard about the Zones' most infamous Killjoys: the times they’ve distributed food and supplies across the Zones after raiding Bat City rations caravans. The bad scrapes they’d barely made it out of and badass underground parties that they occasionally make it out to. The “this is so insane it can’t be true” stories of firefights won and Dracs dusted.
And now, two of the subjects of those infamous stories are right here in front of you, asking for your name and watching you with knowing eyes and an air of—something—about them that you can’t quite put your finger on. Fearlessness, maybe. Danger, most certainly. They seem overbright, like you could feel the crackle of radiation off them if you paid close enough attention. Like they’re no better than the sun in the sky.

Something about the old building and the doorknob being loose, he couldn’t be bothered to remember the specifics of it that seemingly hadn’t passed along to Phantom. But when it was Ifrit he didn’t have to care about the thin gap into the room. He didn’t have to care now. Why would he care what Phantom was doing? He resolutely did not care about it, he told himself as he slid closer to the door.”
