From the reddish puffy eyes, Mike knows Will’s been crying. The tears still clinging to his lashes fall when he first blinks. His cheeks are flushed a soft pink that seems to darken when his mouth slightly opens—he wasn’t expecting to see Mike, after all.

Summary
Will nearly died after the final battle, spending almost two months in a coma while the rest of Hawkins waited helplessly for him to wake up.
Those months changed everything.
For Mike, losing Will once was enough to destroy him. Watching him lie motionless in a hospital bed day after day left him terrified of ever letting Will out of his sight again. So when Will finally wakes up, Mike clings to him harder than ever. Protective at first. Then possessive. Obsessive. Controlling.
And the others let it happen.
The Party remembers how empty everything felt without Will around and how scared they were that he would never wake up. They saw how broken Mike was while waiting for Will to wake up. So instead of calling Mike out, they support him and help convince Will that all of it is normal and only because they love and care about him.
Even if it means manipulating Will into believing the same thing.
