Summary
Whenever he slept, the boy was there.
Dreammates shared dreams when they happened to both be asleep at the same time, of course. The elders said the tides of dreams were dangerous to sink into alone for some, and so the spirits gave them dreammates to keep their souls safe when sleeping. Like ottercats holding onto one another as they floated at sea.
Not everyone had such gifts, and most people only had one or two people to share dreams with. In their village, it was customary that if two children were dreammates that their parents put them down for naps together like family. After all, if the tides of dreams were dangerous, why let anyone go alone who didn’t have to?
Though, Sokka and Katara were never alone when they slept.
There were others who joined their dreams sometimes, three girls and another boy.
But the one boy was always, always, there.
And he never seemed to get any older.

Summary
The Burnish Mechs were the best of the best, created by Kray Foresight to fight the alien invasion. It had been 30 years since their first attack, called the World Burn. In the chaos, Kray gained fame through his ability to fight back. The alien ships had been impervious to the best weaponry the world had to offer, nothing had been able to even dent them until Kray created a new kind of flame.
Galo was only upset that the aliens had been defeated before he ever got to become one of the Burnish Mech Force.
Now the mechs were being slowly decommissioned, as Burnish Flame was no longer necessary for world defense. It still came in useful for some things though. A flame that could be controlled so minutely that it would be formed into solid objects, but also made completely harmless even while it burned. Most of the decommissioned mechs had been turned to construction or rescue efforts now, where their abilities were more useful than war.

Summary
Aziraphale closes his eyes, breathing in a useless but calming breath.
Then he opens them.
All of them.
Perhaps in a human’s brain (provided it didn’t melt right away) it might have interpreted Aziraphale’s eyes opened around himself, floating in space like the motes of dust, or perhaps they wrenched open from his skin, each peering from a different patch of his body but also overlapping one another like an unfinished jigsaw puzzle, or perhaps opened all layered right on top of one another like a bizarre and nauseating stack of glasses overlapping and magnifying.
All of these were kind of true. But they also were kind of wrong.

Summary
See the thing about time is that it isn’t so much a straightforward thing. The idea that time marches ever onward in a neat and tidy line really couldn’t be further from the truth.
Time is like water. Well, also very much not, but minds can only hold so much, so for the purposes of explaining–time is like water. It moves in rivers, but also streams, creeks that twist and loop. It pools into ponds and lakes, then expands past thought into oceans and tides and–you see that this is all very difficult to keep within the metaphor.

Summary
The thing about strings was that if you didn’t want to see yours, or if the spirits willed it, they vanished. Maybe somewhere, deep down, Sokka didn’t want soulmates to exist at all. Life would be easier that way. Less painful.
Sokka can't see any strings. Not even his own.

Summary
[Sokka is five when the first mark appears.
It writes itself in a deep red like a wound, as if someone had carved the word “nonbender” in a messy font across the knuckles of his left hand, as if it was handwritten with a knife.
When he asks his mother, as she applies salve on Sokka’s knuckles, she sighs deeply and says nothing for a few moments.
“Sometimes, spirits don’t make much sense.”
Sokka has yet to turn thirteen when he wakes up screaming in pain, about ten soulmarks all over each other between his left shoulder and his ear, red and vivid like burning flesh. Among the few words that are somehow possible to read out of the disastrous scribbling, “disrespectful” and “coward” and “burned” and “sorry sorry sorry” are the ones that stand out the most to Sokka. He thinks, at the tender age of twelve, whoever did this to his soulmate will be sorry too, one day.
A month after Hakoda leaves him with the job of the protector at the age of thirteen, Sokka realizes, with a bitter taste in his mouth, that he’s got more soulmarks than his entire village combined.]
Or, to have a soulmark is to carry the vilest things that your soulmate believes about themselves on your skin.
