Sure, I would sometimes help Holland take the edge off during late-night stakeouts in his car, and sometimes he’d return the favor until my head felt pleasantly light and my thoughts went fuzzy around the edges. And sure, Holland had called me baby for so long that it barely registered anymore, like it was just another nickname buried beneath the sarcasm and cigarette smoke.
That was normal, wasn’t it?
Friends helped each other out sometimes. Business partners working seventy-hour weeks in a city that smelled like gasoline and bad decisions were bound to blur a few lines. It didn’t mean anything. They were good private investigators and even better friends. Nothing more. Nothing less.
