Summary
It takes the length of the exhale Mo Ran makes when he sees Chu Wanning sweep his hair up in the tiny kitchen of their cottage, the collar of his robe hanging loose, to notice that something is off.
Faintly, Mo Ran remembers Chu Wanning being fascinated by a small tonic a vendor had been selling at a festival a few nights ago. Chu Wanning said the vendor had claimed that the tonic would enhance vitality; it seems that Chu Wanning may have decided to test it. And by the reticence he is showing now, there’s a strong chance that Chu Wanning may have misinterpreted what the vendor meant by vitality.
