Summary
When the two had stood before Cogita, asking for the clue to the next (final, Volo’s mind had whispered) plate, she had almost seemed to hesitate. Her gaze had shifted to Rei’s stomach, a look of what might have been pity crossing her features before her response.
“I’m afraid I’ve no idea where the next plate could possibly be.” she had responded, her gaze losing its softness and becoming more pointed when it had shifted to Volo. “Besides, do the two of you not have more pressing concerns you should be tending to.”

When Rei is exiled from Jubilife and Volo comes to his aid, the boy’s ill-timed heat results in a complication neither are certain how to deal with. Despite their best efforts to track down the remaining plates before their baby is due, Cogita’s lack of help on tracking down the pixie plate means they aren’t able to find them all in time.But Volo is nothing if not adaptable. He isn’t about to let something like a baby stop him from continuing his search. And for that matter, neither is Rei. Even if he is beginning to question if continuing the search is really the correct choice anymore.

Despite his best efforts, Rei isn’t able to let go of that feeling when he had first seen Volo approach Ethan from the treeline. The unease he had felt at the knowledge Volo’s manipulation might have extended to people other than himself. Which leads to him arranging another late night meeting with the man. This one taking a much more heated turn than the last.
