"I don't think he will," Jim said. "Or at least. He says Vulcan marriage involves telepathy--"

"Marriage!" McCoy stared at him, his throat working for a moment before he managed, "Dammit, Jim." He shook his head. "Well, if anyone can tolerate a lifetime hitched to Spock, it's probably you."

"Thanks for the vote of confidence," Jim said.

“Now who has the golden tongue!” Dís retorted, looking pleased, as if a young person had just offered her some great treasure and undervalued it by dint of their youth.

This was the perennial problem with meetings between dwarves and elves—each side invariably saw the other as immature (and uncanny in their immaturity). Bearded infants, beardless little ancients—the juxtaposition never failed to startle. But both Arwen and Dís of the Lonely Mountain were weaned on diplomacy. They accommodated the strangeness of others.

“A golden tongue sounds unwieldy to my ear, though I am no expert on gold and would welcome correction. Heavy, cold—who would want such a thing in their mouth?”

“ARE YOU FOND OF BEARS, CHILD OF FINARFIN?”

“I mean,” said Finrod, “I suppose?”

“YOU SHALL MEET A NEW KIND OF BEAR ON YOUR NEXT HUNTING TRIP.”

    “Alright. Will it be dangerous?”

“NO, HE SHALL BE BALAN. YOU ARE GOING TO BE VERY FOND OF HIM. YOU ARE GOING TO LET HIM LIVE IN YOUR HOUSE FOR DECADES.”

"Very well," said Annatar, briefly flaring in essence to just a shade under 'too bright'. "Then I shall move on to the mole."

    "The mole," repeated Gil-galad.

Elrond asked, "As in Gondolin's 'Mole, House of the'?"

"Elrond's father was very nearly killed by the Lord of that House," said Gil-galad. "It's rather insensitive to come here and base a foundational measure of Arda off of that."

    Bookmarker's Notes

Oh, that was even worse. “It’s just that I – think about things – that are...” It sounded so childish out of context, but explaining that the context was sexual, to Nelyo’s father, would be worse. “That I have heard referred to in other contexts as evidence of the Marring,” said Findekáno, suddenly too formally. It wasn’t only his father’s opinion. He was old enough to read what he liked in the library, now, including legal and anthropological texts.

“And you are, I imagine, completely unwilling to share what they are.” Uncle Fëanáro sounded amused again. Mutely, Findekáno shook his head. “Well!” said Uncle Fëanáro, and reached over awkwardly to pass Findekáno’s shoulder, very much to his surprise. “Maybe so. But it’s said, too, that by means of the Marring Melkor created the first ice, which we skate on and use to cool food and build sculptures of – outside of Tirion, granted, there isn’t enough around here – and which creates its own ecosystems in the far north and south, and has provided inspiration for a large number of environmental and biological innovations by Lady Yavanna which now depend upon its presence. And it’s also said that Eru Ilúvatar intended everything Melkor did in the end. Not everything that comes from the Marring is bad.”
