With deliberate patience, Suguru serenely sets the book aside, gracefully brushes a stray lock of hair behind his ear, politely puts his hands on his thighs and slowly cranes his neck to look up.

    “What do you want, Satoru?” he asks, so simply it feels anticlimactic.
