    Summary

"You sappy bastard." Nobara flicks his forehead, and Megumi hisses, swatting her hand away. "Why are you even here, huh? Why haven't you gotten on a train already?"

"I'm waiting," Megumi snipes back. The duh, idiot is implied, because he really thought she would've expected this. After all, no one would be surprised at him staying for Yuuji, even if it takes another few hundred years. But...

...But Nobara's smile drops, and Megumi's heart drops with it.

(Or: it takes a long time to deliver news to the dead.)

    Bookmarker's Notes

I'll be lonely without you, Yuuji had said, and now Megumi's supposed to just deal with the fact that he's left Yuuji alone for what is, essentially, the rest of time. Like he'd ever be capable of doing that. Like the mere thought of it doesn't make him feel like he's dying again, like it doesn't make every organ inside his body seem like it's shrivelling up from preemptive grief. And the horrible truth of it is that, well—is he even surprised?

Of course Yuuji, of all people, would do this. Isn't that why Megumi fell in love with him in the first place? Yuuji with his bleeding heart, so selfless, so good—of course. Of course he would give up his own afterlife for the sake of helping others. Of course.

And yet: Megumi wishes he was selfish.

Just once—just once—couldn't Yuuji have put himself over the world? Couldn't he have decided that he wanted to do something for himself and damn the consequences? And, deep in the back of Megumi's mind, a sickly voice whispers: was his desire to see Megumi again not enough to outweigh his desire to help?

    Summary

A son. That's right: Toji had one of those. He'd abandoned one of those. His son, in front of him. His son, who his wife had asked him to take care of. Those were her exact words: take care of—take care of...

Shit. What's his name? Toji gave it to him—what was it?

(Or: Fushiguro Toji, sixty seconds before suicide.)

    Summary

Now that he's looking for it, Yuuji can feel it: the words are etched into him, woven into his muscles and carved into his bones. Start by saving me, Itadori. Yuuji promised he would, so now he must.

The burning pain is starting to come back again. It begins in his chest this time, slightly to the right. Yuuji swallows, reaching up to press his hand against it.

So, he thinks dazedly, as the universe begins to take him apart. This is what happens when you break a Binding Vow.

    -

Megumi dies in Shinjuku. Yuuji is thrown back in time to save him. Again, and again, and again.

(Or: Yuuji says “I’ll save you, Fushiguro” and the universe says “bet.”)

    Bookmarker's Notes

“I can't—" His voice breaks. He clears his throat and tries again. "I can't tell you to keep living."

Megumi's eyes widen, just a bit. His eyes really are beautiful, Yuuji thinks distantly. He is beautiful. Even like this, as they sit on either end of a table that doesn't exist, all Yuuji can feel for him is love.”

“It's okay. I heard you, Megumi. You've had enough.

If Megumi wants to come back, then Yuuji will be right here waiting for him. If Megumi wants to leave, then Yuuji will follow him as far as he can before he has to wave him off. But, either way, the decision is out of his hands.

It doesn't matter what Megumi chooses. He doesn't have to say or do or be anything. Yuuji will love him all the same.

Sukuna lunges for him. Yuuji blinks. Breathes out. Thinks of Megumi sitting across from him in the sunlight, the wind in his hair, a cup of his favourite tea fitted snugly between his hands. Safe. Alive. And above all, happy.”

    Summary

Megumi knows, from the moment Yuuji comes into sight, that things went badly.

(Or: they're one year into the zombie apocalypse, and everyone thinks Yuuji's handling it pretty well. Megumi knows better.)

Megumi looks at him now, in the dim yellow light of their little camping lantern, and strokes his thumb over the scar that notches the edge of Yuuji's mouth. Yuuji stares up at him, his jaw fitting so perfectly in Megumi's palms, and for a moment Megumi thinks—he holds Yuuji's life in his hands, the same way Yuuji holds Megumi's. Their hearts live outside their bodies. If either one of them was to lose the other, they'd both be dead.

"Yuuji," Megumi repeats, tilting Yuuji's head further up to truly look him in the eye. "It's not your fault."

    Summary

“You want to ruin him," Sukuna says.

Maybe Sukuna isn’t wrong about that, Fushiguro thinks in a daze. Itadori’s heart is too heavy and too precious. It’s a burden that shouldn’t be given to anyone else. Because even Itadori himself can’t take care of it, can’t hold onto it for the life of him because he’d rather become the vessel to the most wretched of all curses just to help two people he’s only known for a few months—to help Fushiguro, who he’d only met that night.

(I can keep it. Fushiguro’s hands move. I can hold onto it, if you want.)

Maybe Sukuna’s definition of ruin wasn’t all that wrong from what Fushiguro wanted after all. Maybe that did make him just as wretched.

But if Itadori was still willing to stay beside him, despite knowing that—

Then there was no reason for Fushiguro to let him go.

    Or—

Some dreams start to keep Fushiguro up at night, and the cure to stopping them might be closer than he thinks.

    Bookmarker's Notes

And Nobara’s the only one who saw, waiting outside those gates, as Fushiguro made their way toward them. Fushiguro’s face, drenched by the rain and half-hidden like a shadow. The white of his uniform shirt darkened red around him because his outer jacket was wrapped up, bundling the body he held in his arms, carefully holding it like something reverent and important and cherished.

(Because it was. Because it is .)

Because Fushiguro Megumi’s the one who carried Itadori out. Because Fushiguro’s the one who didn’t let go, waiting there in the rain beside Nobara, slumped onto the floor with blood drenching the front of his shirt where Itadori’s open, missing heart kept bleeding, spilling into his hands.

Itadori’s cold, heavy body in his arms.

Nobara’s the only one who knows this, and she does Fushiguro the silent, eternal favor of never forgetting.
