Summary
All he knows is Dad’s never made him feel that way. Maybe it’s because he can’t remember the last time Dad made him feel loved - but something about him feels pure, crystalline, holy water touch cleansing the world around him. And he knows Dad won’t want this. Knows he'll hate him for it, that he'll be disgusted. He's not stupid enough to think anything could come of this but heartbreak and loss. But it doesn't matter. It can't matter, because guesswork isn't enough anymore. He has to know for certain. It's not hope that spurs his hand, so much desperation, a last, thrashing attempt to know the truth. Dad's response may seem inevitable, but he needs to know, if only to confront it. Even if it means pushing Dad further away. Even if it means pushing the knife deeper, mangled in its precision, praying it'll purge the corruption from his soul.

Summary
He leaves the motel earlier than usual, walks to the bar. It’s not until he’s standing next to freeway traffic that he realises he could have taken the car. He doesn’t have it in him to walk the rest of the way, but the images of the skeleton boy he loves sitting in their shitty room with the leaking tap and yellowed dish-towels haunt his eyelids too much to turn around. He contemplates flagging down a car, going nowhere, somewhere without Sam or Dad or the sins that have been chasing him all his life.
He turns around and walks back to the motel.
