"He's a Harbinger," Kazuha says flatly.
Beidou scratches the back of her neck and gives an awkward chuckle. "Technically, he's a diplomat."

In which the voyage to Inazuma comes with a few complications.

    Summary

The bouquet is… modest. Which is to say: clumsy. A little wild, like it was plucked by someone who didn’t know what would match but wanted it all to mean something anyway. A riot of silvers and whites and blue-touched greens, the colors of the sea when it’s thinking of the sky. Some of the stems are uneven. The string binding them is just that—string, frayed and rough. There’s no ribbon. No note.

But the moment Neuvillette touches them, his throat tightens like the air is suddenly full of brine.

He doesn’t take them at first. He just stares. Then he looks up, as if expecting an explanation, as if he’s waiting for the punchline. But Wriothesley doesn’t give him one. He doesn’t give him anything but that half-shrug of a smile that Neuvillette is starting to learn means more than it lets on.

“For your office,” Wriothesley adds, like he’s offering a paperweight. Like it’s nothing. Like he didn’t just reach inside Neuvillette’s chest and place something warm and fragile on the altar of his ribs.

Or, Wriothesley keeps showing up with flowers and Neuvillette keeps keeping them.

    Summary

    And Neuvillette… Neuvillette.

He doesn’t know how it happened, but Wriothesley has started thinking about him more when he’s not reading than when he is. He watches him differently in courtrooms, though he tries not to.

Neuvillette speaks with that same soft detachment, that same careful cadence, that same deliberate restraint. He stands always too straight, too composed, like something fragile that’s afraid to crack.

But then Wriothesley returns home, flips open the newest borrowed volume, and sees this:

“They speak of me as if I have no pulse. But how can I explain that I feel too much?”

    And:

“Is it foolish to wish someone might look at me—not the robes, not the title, not the judgment—but me, and stay anyway?”

    And:

“I watch him when I shouldn’t. When he leans against the marble banister and says nothing. He is very good at saying nothing, and yet I feel as though I have heard his entire life.”

Wriothesley stares at the words for so long, he forgets what time it is.

Or, how two men fall in love in the margins of legal textbooks.

Five times Neuvillette said “I do not have favorites” while making direct eye contact with Wriothesley’s collarbones (and being watched by everyone else). And the one time, with bruised lips and courtroom silence, he proved himself a liar and a man in love.

Five times Neuvillette acted like a dragon (over hot chocolate, baked goods, legal bindings, jealous growls, and unauthorized nesting), and the one time he simply acted like a man in love.
