There’s a small half-moon of blood under the white of Tim’s nail where he bent it. He studies the red of it, feeling foggy and dreamlike. “Can I ask you a question?”
His brother’s eyes flick to him and away again, surprised and wary. “What?”
His nail doesn’t hurt much, just the dullest of aches when he presses down against it. “When you were homeless, you slept with people for money, didn’t you?”
Jason jerks like he’s been slapped. His knuckles are so pale where they grip the steering wheel they suddenly look more bone than flesh. “Did I -”
“Was it worth it?” Tim asks, drifting like a cloud over whatever furious reaction Jason was about to give him. “The money, I mean.”
His sternum slams into the seatbelt with bruising force. Unbraced for it, his head whips forward and back against his seat as they swerve off the road again and skid to a halt with a screech of rubber.

Summary
Tim Drake was dead.
It wasn't anything remarkable. In fact, his death went unnoticed by the world for nearly a decade. That's because despite having died, Tim kept on living. Sure he might be a ghost now, but he still got hurt, he still bled when cut, he still ate, he still went to school. To anyone else, it looked like he was a normal, if slightly pale and skinny, boy. He worked hard to pretend that he was alive when he knew he wasn't. Hiding what he was from everyone, including Batman.
But all that starts to unravel when his grave is threatened to be disturbed.
The major character death tag is for Tim.

Bruce doesn’t know what’s wrong with his child, but he’s pretty sure kids aren’t meant to work like this.
From the day he had looked up into the tops of the circus tent and saw a frightened mirror image of a boy who had just experienced the worst day of his life, Bruce had instantly gone into emergency mode.
The Gotham PD had wanted to pass the boy off into the care of the circus. The circus had mumbled underneath their breaths about superstitions, about not having a boy like that with them, about not being able to handle something like Dick. So GCPD, not knowing what to do, had started talking about one of the handful of overburdened boy homes that handles a majority of Gotham’s unlucky orphans.
All the while, the camera lights flash bright and loud, wanting to know everything.
Bruce couldn’t let that happen.
Not then, not ever again.

Bruce is trying his best to protect the city that he loves. He doesn't know how exactly his Robins came to be- they're not fully human, not even at all. All he knows is that he wants to keep them safe.

"Alright, asshole," says Jason and plunks a folder down directly on the keyboard of Tim's laptop. "I'm calling in that IOU."
Tim doesn't startle, not visibly. But all at once there's a batarang in his hand, the blade gleaming sharp. It takes him a second to register who the intruder actually is before he gives Jason a lingering, suspicious sidelong glance and tucks it away again.
"What IOU?" says Tim. "And how'd you get in here?"
He looks like shit, frankly. There are dark smudges under his eyes, and he's lost weight since Jason's seen him last. From the coffee cups scattered around the desk, it's probably even odds that he's on at least 24 hours without sleep.
"I work in mysterious ways," declares Jason. "By which I mean your window's open. You get kind of careless when you haven't slept, Timbo."

Summary
Tim wasn’t leaning on any of the shelving, he wasn’t, that would risk knocking something down if he were to pass out or whatever and while Tim was absolutely not going to faint he also absolutely didn’t want to ruin any displays if he really did go down.
Despite the tightness in Tim’s chest, he breathed. It was probably just some weird panic attack or whatever, the girls will get bored and they will go home and Tim could spend some time with no noise, no lights and the fewest amount of physical sensations as possible and he would be fine again.
Steph had gone to another small aisle and Tim numbly followed her, wishing that she just turn around and see that he wasn’t okay while wishing even harder that she never ever even question if he was doing okay because he was fine, everything was fine.
Sure, Tim couldn’t breathe but that was pretty much parr for the course by this point and yeah his head was swimming and he genuinely was wondering if he was going to pass out or not but it was fine, everything was fine.
