    “Cal.” The use of his first name alone clearly got his attention, but it wasn’t until her palms pressed to his cheeks and pulled their faces not even a hair’s breadth apart that he really focused on her. “I am here, and so are you. Nothing in this galaxy will change that, you have my word.”

    “But what if-”

    “Nothing.” She emphasized at his attempt to bring up different possibilities that were most likely more implausible than the next.

    Cal’s expression turned to something that was a mix of hopeful and reluctant. “Promise?” His voice was small, not unlike a child asking for assurance that there was no monster under their bed.

    “I promise.”  Merrin’s words were punctuated with a brief kiss, a smile pulling at the corner of her mouth, morphing her usually stoic expression into something softer.
