Summary
His mind is a madhouse, twisting all over the place, circling around and around until it inevitably lands back on Will. He wants to fix this. It’s what he does. It’s what he’s supposed to be good at—helping his friends. But he doesn’t know how to fix anything this time. People are going to say what they’re going to say, and everything Mike can think of just seems like it’ll make things worse.
It’s not like Will can go back in the closet, at this point, not that he’d want to. And nothing Mike says or does will convince a hoard of homophobic teenagers that there’s nothing wrong with being gay. He can’t convince them that Will doesn’t have a crush on him because they just think he’s “oblivious”. Which is ridiculous. Mike would know if Will had a crush on him. And Will would never have a crush on him anyway. Will is headstrong but quiet, calm and assured. Sarcastic and funny and kind and wonderful.
There are a lot of things that Mike doesn’t know, but he knows this for certain: If Will were to fall in love, it wouldn’t be with an idiot like Mike.or: When rumors start spreading about Will Byers being in love with his best friend, Mike has to figure out a solution, preferably before prom.

Mike grabs Will’s hands and tangles them with his own, blinking up at him through his long, dark lashes. His eyes are endless. Solid black, like the night above them. So shiny that Will can see himself, tipsy and happy, in the reflection. “I want to be stuck with you,” Mike whispers, like it’s a secret. “I don’t ever want to leave.”
Will sucks in a sharp breath, squeezing his hands. “Then don’t,” he whispers back, punched-out and honest. “Stay.”

Before Mike even really realised what he was doing, he was lifting himself up on his hands, bringing himself up over Will’s body so he could kiss the smile on his lips. Will let out a pleased, happy little sigh, and Mike wanted nothing more than to make him do it again. He wanted to discover every single noise that Will could make. He couldn’t believe that he’d gotten to do this before, that he’d forgotten this.
