Summary
It was once impossible for Eddie to swing so close to the sun. Now, suddenly, he finds himself craving the warmth. He wants to dig deep, commit to these thoughts and their natural conclusion beyond the single apple bite. It’s a softer reality now — not cruel, not scary, easier to swallow — and it’s happened almost overnight. When exactly did Eddie become capable of such a thing? He can’t be sure. Maybe it was just that he was getting older. Maybe he was becoming more comfortable living the life he had built for himself with love and care and people who dispensed those feelings back to him, people who never judged him too harshly. Maybe it was merely a case of checks and balances; the freedom of knowing that once everything is gone there will be nothing much left to lose.
Whatever the reason for this revelation, it hardly matters. The wingspan of Eddie’s longing broadens with his search. And before Icarus ever fell, at least he flew.
Salvation comes for Eddie in the form of a misplaced camisole, a forgotten tube of lip gloss and a gay cowboy bar called Butch & Sundance. The rest is fundamental.

Summary
Every now and then, when he’s more tired than usual or when he’s had a particularly long day, Eddie will close his eyes in bed at night and think about Evan Buckley.
The picture of Buck he conjures in his head is always smiling. That was one thing about Buck that he’ll never forget. Sometimes, it felt like the joy coursing through him was so strong and overpowering it was going to burst out of the seams of his body and shoot its way across the room to Eddie, ensnare him in it and reel him in until he was helplessly, hopelessly smiling back.
Buck had many different smiles; big, cheesy grins he used to direct at Christopher; soft, slow ones he’d give to Eddie when they were sitting on the couch in the firehouse late at night; sharp, flirty ones he’d turn on bartenders to get free shots, and then point in Eddie’s direction, which always made his stomach turn nervously. And then, towards the end of their friendship, the sad, resigned smiles, the ones that turned Eddie’s stomach in a way that made him want to run to the bathroom and empty his guts.

Eddie was blissfully ignorant to the direction of Buck's thoughts. He was innocently using a kettlebell, entirely unaware of the way Buck's eyes were drawn to his arms as he lifted it. He watches as Buck holds the handle of the sword above his head, the tip of the blade piercing through the cap of something below him, a liquid of some sort. He dips the tip of the blade in a couple of inches, bringing it back up so it’s now pointing towards the sky after he pulls it out. The clear liquid trails down the sword, soaking the metal. Once half the blade is dripping, he holds it out straight, pointing it towards the crowd once again. The older man next to him lights a match, dropping it on the blade before he takes a few steps back. The sword ignites in a flame, crackling on the metal.
Eddie’s eyes shoot open, bulging out of his head. His chest tightens in fear as he watches Buck hand the blade off to the other man, dropping down to his knees. He opens his mouth wide, sticking his tongue out.
“Is he about to swallow a sword that is on fire?” Eddie’s voice feels like it’s getting caught in his throat, it coming out squeaky and rough.
