It was supposed to be temporary. But somewhere along the way, the water changes. A place where mers are safe. Where younglings are raised in the open. Where humans don't hunt. A place where no one is kept unless they choose to stay.
Katsuki doesn't trust it, doesn't trust the humans. He definitely doesn't trust the way his body reacts: to the water, to the others...to Kirishima. Because if it is just instinct, he can leave.

Katsuki stopped chewing, his fork hovering inches from a piece of wilted lettuce. He stared at her, feeling a sudden regret for ever opening his mouth. Ten minutes ago, she had been a sympathetic listener, but now she looked entirely too amused by his suffering.

Steve watched as Eddie swallowed, his throat bobbing as he cut a sideways look at Steve. “Dude, shut up. Nobody’s interested in me. I think I would know if they were.”

When Steve goes for a late night walk to the quarry, he runs into none other than Eddie Munson. After they both confide in the other about their personal struggles, Eddie offers to smoke with Steve in the back of his van. Steve agrees, only to get way more than he'd originally bargained for.
